ONE SERIES Electronic Pressure and Temperature Switches with "I AM WORKING" Signal IM1-02 UNITED ELECTRIC CONTROLS Installation & Maintenance Instructions Please read all instructional literature carefully and thoroughly before starting. Refer to the final page for the listing of Recommended Practices, Liabilities and Warrantees. GENERAL One Series electronic switches utilize a ceramic pressure sensor or 100Ω RTD to measure the process variable and provide local alarm or shutdown actuation along with local and remote system status indication. A unique IAW circuit provides the local and remote indication of the output status and the health of the product. An internal solid-state switching device allows for long switch life with no arcing or contact wear, providing years of reliable operation. The local process and status indication, as well as a proprietary remote status signal, provide a clear indication that the One Series product is functioning properly. SIMPLE TO USE AS 1, 2, 3 1. Mount the One Series using the process connection or two mounting ears. 2. Wire the One Series using the convenient conduit connection. Color coded lead wires or optional terminal block allow field connections to be made in seconds. 3. Configure the One Series using the simple four key keypad and helpful display prompts. Remove cover, choose an operating mode, set point and deadband. Replace cover. MOUNTING Tools 1 1/16 wrench for hex fitting Screwdriver for mounting screws 2 mounting screws (1/4 Max.) FOR PRESSURE AND LOCAL TEMPERATURE MODELS ALWAYS HOLD A WRENCH ON THE HOUSING HEX WHEN MOUNTING UNIT. DO NOT TIGHTEN BY TURNING ENCLOSURE. THIS WILL DAMAGE THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE SENSOR AND HOUSING. INSTALL UNITS WHERE SHOCK, VIBRATION AND TEMPERATURE FLUCTUATIONS ARE MINIMAL. ORIENT UNIT TO PREVENT MOISTURE FROM ENTERING ENCLOSURE. IT IS IMPERATIVE TO USE PROPERLY RATED SEALING FITTINGS FOR ELECTRICAL WIRE ENTRY. DO NOT MOUNT UNIT IN AMBIENT TEMPERATURES EXCEEDING PUBLISHED LIMITS. THIS IS ESPECIALLY CRITICAL FOR LOCAL MOUNT TEMPERATURE UNITS. 1 The One Series product may be mounted in any position providing the electrical conduit connection is not facing up. See Diagrams 1 and 2. Ensure the process connection is sealed to the process port to prevent leakage. Process Connections PRESSURE MODELS To pipe mount. Thread the pressure connection onto the pressure port. Use a wrench on the hex pressure connection to tighten. Test for leaks. IN HIGH SHOCK AND VIBRATION APPLICATIONS, DO NOT MOUNT VIA THE PRESSURE CONNECTION ONLY. LOCAL TEMPERATURE MODELS For immersion sensing. Use of a thermowell is highly recommended to aid in maintenance, testing and preservation of the system integrity. Insert the sensor housing (0.25 diameter) into the well, insuring that the housing bottoms out and will be completely immersed in the media (1.5 min.). Secure the sensor using an appropriately sized compression fitting. Test for leaks. IN HIGH SHOCK AND VIBRATION APPLICATIONS, DO NOT MOUNT VIA THE PROCESS CONNECTION ONLY. For ambient sensing. Mount using the mounting ears on the electronics housing. Mount the product to ensure that the sensor housing will not be damaged and where the measured temperature is representative of the surrounding environment. REMOTE TEMPERATURE MODELS For surface sensing. Secure the 2½ sensor housing to the pipe or vessel using an adhesive or strapping method suitable for the application. For immersion sensing. Use of a thermowell is highly recommended to aid in maintenance, testing and preservation of the system integrity. Insert the sensor housing (0.25 diameter) into the well ensuring that the housing bottoms out and will be completely immersed in the media (2.5 min.) Secure the sensor using an appropriately sized union connector. Test for leaks. For best temperature measurements, the sensor housing must be in full contact with the surface or media being measured. Locate where the temperature is most representative of the system. Minimum insertion depth is 2½.

Route the extension wire to avoid contact with live components. Avoid kinks, or excessive flexing. Heat transfer compound may be used to aid in temperature response. Electronics Housing Mount the unit using the two (2) ¼ clearance holes on mounting ears. Plumb sensor to the process port. WIRING TOOLS Flat-blade screwdriver if terminal block is specified Wire strippers DISCONNECT ALL SUPPLY CIRCUITS BEFORE WIRING UNIT. WIRE IN ACCORDANCE WITH NATIONAL AND LOCAL ELECTRICAL CODES. MAXIMUM RECOMMENDED WIRE SIZE IS 14 AWG. THE RECOMMENDED TIGHTENING TORQUE FOR FIELD WIRING TERMINALS IS 6.5 IN/LBS. ELECTRICAL RATINGS STATED IN LITERATURE AND ON NAMEPLATES MUST NOT BE EXCEEDED. OVERLOAD ON A SWITCH CAN CAUSE FAILURE. NOTE: If unexpected changes in the output will have an adverse affect on your system, it may be best to configure the product off-line by applying temporary power to the device and programming the mode, set point and deadband values. The inputs and outputs of the One Series product are protected against reverse polarity and over voltage. However, correct wiring is essential to ensure proper operation of the switch. Optional configurations may change the terminal designation, location, wire color or size. Be certain to choose the proper wiring Diagram for the product being installed. See Diagrams 4 to 14 for wiring/terminal designations. Power Supply Connections The One Series is powered using an VDC power source. The power supply circuit common is shared internally with: the IAW switched output the 100 ma open drain switch output the optional 4-20 ma signal Connect the positive (+) lead to the Red, 20 AWG wire (Model A) or the terminal marked V+ (Models B & C). Connect the negative (-) lead to the Black, 20 AWG wire (Model A) or the terminal marked circuit common (Models B & C). See Diagram 4. ALTHOUGH THE ONE SERIES INCORPORATES REVERSE POLARITY AND SURGE PROTECTION ON THE POWER SUPPLY INPUT, IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT POLARITY 2 AND VOLTAGE LEVELS BE CONFIRMED PRIOR TO POWERING THE UNIT. IF ERRANT SWITCHING OF THE OUTPUT WILL HAVE ADVERSE AFFECTS ON THE SYSTEM ENSURE THAT THE OUTPUT(S) ARE NOT CONNECTED UNTIL THE PRODUCT HAS BEEN CONFIGURED APPROPRIATELY. IAW Output Connections The One Series 100 ma open drain IAW output is a sinking output which completes the circuit to the circuit common. The power for the IAW output must be provided externally and referenced to the power supply circuit common (earth ground). If the device to be controlled is a pilot light or relay, the negative (-) side of the load will be connected to the One Series output connection. For Model A, this would be the Orange, 20 AWG wire. For Models B & C, the terminal is marked IAW output. The positive side of the load is connected to the load power source V l +. See Diagram 5. NOTE: If the IAW load is inductive (i.e. a relay), a fly back diode, such as a 1N914 should be used to prevent an inductive feedback into the switched output circuit. See Diagram 6. LOGIC SOLVER CONNECTION The One Series IAW output is connected directly to a digital input channel on the logic solver. An appropriately sized pull-up resistor must be connected between the digital input and a DC power source. The value of the pull-up resistor must be calculated based on the excitation voltage and the voltage threshold for a logic level low required by the logic solver. The off-state leakage current of 10 µa must be factored into the equation. See Diagram 7. NOTE: Consult United Electric for flow charts, state diagrams and timing charts for the IAW output when interfacing with a logic solver. 100 ma Switched Output Connections (Output Models A & B) The One Series' 100 ma open drain switched output is a sinking output which completes the circuit to the circuit common. The power for the switched output must be provided externally and referenced to the power supply circuit common (earth ground). If the device to be controlled is a pilot light or relay, the negative (-) side of the load will be connected to the One Series output connection. For Model A, this would be the Brown, 20 AWG wire. For Models B & C, the terminal is marked SWT- OUT.

The positive side of the load is connected to the load power source V l +. See Diagram 8. NOTE: If the switched output load is inductive (i.e. a relay), a fly back diode, such as a 1N914 should be used to prevent an inductive feedback into the switched output circuit. See Diagram 9. LOGIC SOLVER CONNECTION The One Series' 100 ma switched output may also be connected to a digital input channel on a logic solver. See Diagram 10. Summary of Wiring Connections The following tables show the output function and the corresponding connection on the product. Solid State Relay Switched Output (Output Type C) The One Series SSR switched output is a single pole, single throw (SPST) switching device which makes and breaks the output circuit. Two terminals are provided for the external load power source (VAC-HI) and the switched signal connected to the device under control (LOAD). Wire the output as follows, per Diagram 11. The power source connects to the terminal marked VAC-HI The load connects to the terminal marked LOAD The other load connection is to the power source return Optional 4-20 ma Analog Process Signal Output The One Series 4-20 ma output signal is intended for remote monitoring or trending of the process variable. The output is a sourcing (powered) output which simply means, no external power supply should be applied to this connection. The current loop begins with the output connection, through the remote indicator or controller (500Ω max.) terminating at the One Series circuit common connection. See Diagram 12. The positive (+) lead of the output device is connected to the Ones Series, 4-20 ma output connection. For Model A, this would be the Yellow, 20 AWG wire. For Models B & C, the terminal is marked 4-20 ma. The Negative (-) lead of the output device must return to the One Series circuit common connection. The One Series 4 to 20 ma output may also be connected to a logic solver. See Diagram 13. 3

THEORY OF OPERATION The One Series electronic switch evaluates the measured process variable and switches the output ON or OFF based on the set point & deadband values, and the selected switch mode. Programmable features such as set point, deadband and switch mode determine how the product is to operate and at what values. The SET POINT is the value at which the output switch turns ON or OFF to initiate an alarm or shutdown sequence. See Setting of User Parameters - Set Point. The DEADBAND setting determines the difference above or below set point at which the output switch will reset after the set point has been reached. See Setting of User Parameters - Deadband. The SWITCH MODE setting determines if: The switched output is ON or OFF above or below the set point value (NO or NC). The local status indicator flashes to indicate the switch output has tripped either above or below the set point value. The I Am Working (IAW ) signal flashes either above or below the set point value. The deadband is above or below the set point value. See Setting of User Parameters - Switch Mode. 4 The - Extreme and + Extreme are the minimum and maximum process values (lowest and highest) sensed by the product. This provides a snapshot of process variations since the last time these values had been reset by the user. A local status indicator (LED) aids the user in determining the switch output state. When the LED is illuminated continuously, it signifies normal operation (no fault condition). A flashing LED signifies a tripped condition (an alarm or shutdown condition, process variable has surpassed the set point value). If the LED is not illuminated, it signifies the switch has lost power or is not able to function properly. Whether the LED output is ON above or below the set point is determined by the SWITCH MODE setting. I Am Working (IAW ) signal provides a remote signal which can be used to determine the health of the product. It can also be used to determine whether the output has tripped. The IAW signal has three (3) states: ON when the product is powered, and internal diagnostics determine that it is functioning properly and the output has not tripped. OFF when product has lost power or the internal diagnostics have indicated a failure. Flashing ON and OFF (in 50 ms. intervals) to indicate that the product is functioning properly but the output has tripped. The IAW output is an open drain (collector) output which may be used as a signal to a PC, PLC or DCS logic input or to drive a 5 to 30 VDC (100 ma max.) indicator lamp. The internal diagnostics test the health of the microprocessor, sensor, firmware and power supply for proper operation. NOTE: The power supply voltage for the IAW output must not exceed the power supply input to the device. The Switched Output may be used in a number ways to provide local control of the alarm/shutdown circuit, eliminating the need for remote monitoring, interpretation, and switching logic algorithms in a PLC, DCS or computer. The One Series switched output is intended to initiate an alarm or shutdown sequence locally and independent of other interpretive devices. Either the low level open drain output or the optional high current solid-state relay provide fast, reliable switching in the field at the point of measurement. The switched output is designed as a fail-safe-open circuit so that if the One Series loses power the output will open. The standard, open drain output may be used to trigger logic level circuits to initiate an alarm or shutdown sequence. The optional high level solid-state relay is intended to switch loads directly such as relays, contactors or moderate AC voltage loads. NOTE: The power supply voltage for the low level version of the switch output must not exceed the power supply input to the device. A LCD digital display (user adjustable version only) provides additional information such as process variable (both numeric and in a bar graph format), units of measure, and switch status.

The measured process variable is displayed numerically on the top line of the display, along with the selected units of measure. The second line of the display serves as a bar graph indicator and displays several diagnostic messages. Display diagnostic VALUE > SET POINT VALUE < SET POINT OVERANGE OUT OF RANGE Displayed if process variable is: Above high limit alarm/shutdown set point value Below low limit alarm/shutdown set point value Above the device maximum operating range Set point or deadband value is set out of range The bar graph indicator consists of 48 segments, each segment representing a process value of approximately 2% of span. Certain diagnostic information may be displayed in the lower line of the display. If the output trips, VALUE > SET POINT or VALUE < SET POINT will flash, alternately with the bar graph indication, to alert the user what condition has caused the switched output to trip. An alternately flashing display of OVERRANGE! informs the user that the measured process variable is above the maximum range value. A four key keypad (user adjustable versions only) allows for front panel programming of the operating parameters. SET POINT, DEADBAND, SWITCH MODE, process EXTREMES and UNIT ID NUMBER are displayed and edited using the keypad. Key In Operating Mode In View/Edit Mode SET POINT value Increases selected value DEADBAND value Decreases selected value SWITCH MODE Shifts the cursor Left UNIT #/SERIAL # Shifts the cursor Right A single press of a key displays the appropriate parameter. NOTE: If there is no keypad activity for approximately 4 seconds, the unit returns to normal operation. Pressing the and keys simultaneously allows you to Enter the editing mode and Exit the editing mode and save the new parameter. Pressing the key twice rapidly, displays the (+) and (-) Extreme values read by the product since the last time these values were reset. NOTE: If the product remains in the EDIT mode, and there is no keypad activity for approximately 30 seconds, the unit returns to the normal operating mode and new data is NOT saved. An optional 4 to 20 ma analog current output is available to provide a remote indication of the process variable, relative to the full scale range of the product. The output signal is proportional over the operating range of the unit (4 ma at the minimum range value, 20 ma at the maximum range value) The output is non-isolated, capable of driving loads up to 500Ω maximum impedance and may be used as an input to a PC, PLC or DCS, to monitor process trends or to drive a remote analog indicator. Start Up Indication At start-up the display reads: VERSION X* X.XX* **** OK **** After approximately 2 seconds the unit enters NORMAL CONTROL MODE and shows appropriate display and alarm status indication: X.XXX psi SETTING OF USER PARAMETERS Tools Phillips head screwdriver Remove Lexan or stainless steel cover to access keypad. Switch Mode TO DISPLAY THE SWITCH MODE The SWITCH MODE determines if the output energizes above or below the set point, if the deadband is above or below the set point, and if the output status LED and IAW signal flash when the output energizes or de-energizes. To simplify set-up, the One Series is programmed to configure the switch output status, LED and IAW status, and deadband operation, based on the type of application desired. There are four switch modes, each set the operating characteristics as follows: Mode Output Front Panel IAW Deadband Switch Status LED Switched is: Contacts "Flashes" Output "Pulses" High Limit Alarm close on rise above set point above set point below set point High Limit Shutdown open on rise above set point above set point below set point Low Limit Alarm close on fall below set point below set point above set point Low Limit Shutdownopen on fall below set point below set point above set point These modes pre-configure the One Series for logical operation. Example: For High Limit Alarm, when the process variable goes above set point the output turns ON, both the local and remote status indicators flash signaling a tripped output, and the switch resets once the process variable has dropped below the set point value and the deadband. To display the SWITCH MODE press the arrow key: X.XXX psi High Limit Alarm 5

NOTE: If there is no keypad activity for approximately 4 seconds, the unit returns to normal operation. TO CHANGE THE SWITCH MODE 1. First display the SWITCH MODE by pressing the arrow key. 2. Simultaneously press and hold the and keys. A cursor will flash on the display. You are now in the EDIT mode. 3. Use the and keys to scroll the display to the desired value. 4. To save the new value, press the and keys simultaneously. Unit reverts to NORMAL CONTROL MODE. NOTE: If the product remains in the EDIT mode, and there is no keypad activity for approximately 30 seconds, the unit returns to the normal operating mode and new data is NOT saved. NOTE: If the product remains in the EDIT mode, and there is no keypad activity for approximately 30 seconds, the unit returns to normal operating mode and new data is NOT saved. Set Point TO DISPLAY THE SET POINT The SET POINT is the value at which the output trips. The switched output will reset once the process variable returns beyond the set point value plus (or minus) the deadband value (depending on the SWITCH MODE selected). Example: For High Limit Alarm, if SP = 300, Deadband = 50, switch energizes at 300 and 250. To display the SET POINT value, press the arrow key: X.XXX psi Set Point: X.XXX NOTE: If there is no keypad activity for approximately 4 seconds, the unit returns to normal operation. TO CHANGE THE SET POINT VALUE 1. First display the SET POINT value by pressing the arrow key. 2. Simultaneously press the and keys. A cursor will flash on the display. 3. Use the and keys to move the cursor to the value to be edited. 4. Use the and keys to scroll the digit to the desired value. NOTE: In the left hand most value position, the and keys toggle between (+) and (-), however negative values will NOT be accepted by the product. 5. To save the new set point, press the and keys simultaneously. Unit reverts to NORMAL CONTROL MODE. NOTE: Attempting to select a Set Point value outside of the operating range will result in an error message - "Out Of Range - and the value will be ignored. 6

Deadband The DEADBAND value is the difference, in units, between when the switched output energizes and de-energizes. The DEADBAND operation will change based on the selected SWITCH MODE to be either positive (above) or negative (below) the set point. The deadband value is always set as a positive number (no negative values). In High Limit Alarm and High Limit Shutdown mode, the deadband is below the set point. In Low Limit Alarm and Low Limit Shutdown mode, the deadband is above the set point. TO DISPLAY THE DEADBAND VALUE To display the deadband value, press the arrow key: X.XXX psi Deadband: X.XXX TO SET THE DEADBAND VALUE 1. First display the DEADBAND value by pressing the arrow key. 2. Simultaneously press and hold the and keys. A cursor will flash on the display. 3. Use the and keys to move the cursor to the value to be edited. 4. Use the and keys to scroll the digit to the desired value. 5. To save the new value, press the and keys. Unit reverts to NORMAL CONTROL MODE. NOTE: If the product remains in the EDIT mode, and there is no keypad activity for approximately 30 seconds, the unit returns to the normal operating mode and new data is not saved. NOTE: Consider the SWITCH MODE and operating range when determining set point and deadband values to ensure that the reset value is within the operating range. For example, if the unit is operating in a High Limit Shutdown Mode, the set point is 25 psi and the deadband is 30 psi, the output will trip OFF but never reset. -/+ Extreme Values The - Extreme and + Extreme are the minimum and maximum process values (lowest and highest) sensed by the product. This provides a snapshot of process variations since the last time these values had been reset by the user. TO DISPLAY THE -/+ EXTREME READINGS Press the arrow key two times rapidly: - Extreme XXXX + Extreme XXXX TO RESET BOTH THE -/+ EXTREME READINGS Press the arrow key two times rapidly. Simultaneously press the and keys. Unit reverts to NORMAL CONTROL MODE. Unit # and Operating Range The UNIT # is a factory set value for factory use only. There is no default value and this number may be any value between 01 to 99. The Operating Range is for reference only and is displayed in psi. This will correspond to the minimum and maximum values that the unit may be set to, or will display. To display the Unit # and Operating Range, press the arrow key: 0 to XXXX psi Unit #: XX Replacement Parts /User Service There are no user serviceable parts in this product. Should a product require service, it must be returned to the factory for evaluation. 7

Diagram 14 NOTE: The Voltage applied to the IAW and Switch (Models A & B) outputs may not exceed the voltage applied to the power supply input 20 RECOMMENDED PRACTICES AND WARNINGS United Electric Controls Company recommends careful consideration of the following factors when specifying and installing UE pressure and temperature units. Before installing a unit, the Installation and Maintenance instructions provided with unit must be read and understood. To avoid damaging unit, proof pressure and max. temperature limits stated in literature and on nameplates must never be exceeded, even by surges in the system. Operation of the unit up to proof pressure or max. temperature is acceptable on a limited basis (i.e. start-up, testing) but continuous operation must be restricted to the designated adjustable range. Excessive cycling at proof pressure or maximum temperature limits could reduce sensor life. A back-up unit is necessary for applications where damage to a primary unit could endanger life, limb or property. A high or low limit switch is necessary for applications where dangerous runaway conditions could result. The adjustable range must be selected so that incorrect, inadvertent or malicious setting at any range point can not result in an unsafe system condition. Install unit where shock, vibration and ambient temperature fluctuations will not damage unit or affect operation. Orient unit so that moisture does not enter the enclosure via the electrical connection. Unit must not be altered or modified after shipment. Consult UE if modification is necessary. Monitor operation to observe warning signs of possible damage to unit, such as drift in set point. Check unit immediately. Preventative maintenance and periodic testing is necessary for critical applications where damage could endanger property or personnel. For all applications, a factory set unit should be tested before use. Electrical ratings stated in literature and on nameplate must not be exceeded. Overload on a switch can cause damage, even on the first cycle. Wire unit according to local and national electrical codes, using wire size recommended in installation sheet. Use only factory authorized replacement parts and procedures. Do not mount unit in ambient temp. exceeding published limits.
