1 Congratulations on your acquisition of an Escher-Grad Cobalt8 Platesetter. These are some of the finest and most reliable equipment of their kind in the industry. Used properly and in their appropriate environmental conditions, these systems are designed to give you years of productive operation. This document covers essential issues requiring attention and preparation before the delivery and installation of your Escher-Grad equipment. Please read through it carefully and use the Site Preparation Planner and Checklist to help ensure a trouble-free installation (located at the end of this document). Choosing the Right location & Room / Operating Requirements The first step is to find a suitable, clean location within your building for the Escher-Grad imaging system. This would preferably be located on the ground floor to facilitate installation. The foundation must be solid in order to minimize vibration. Also, the surface must be reasonably level. The floor surface should be an insulating material such as linoleum or acrylic tile. Carpet is not recommended, because it generates dust and static electricity. The plate processor, plate rack, air compressor, and a small desk for the Rip Server must be considered during floor planning. The Cobalt 8 Platesetter requires a grounded Amps or Amps line. It also must have a dedicated electrical breaker that cannot be used for any other device. The electrical outlet must be within 60" (152 cm) from the rear left corner of the Platesetter, and should have four available outlets (sockets). Escher-Grad will accommodate any national standards of power plugs, voltages and frequencies. Be sure to indicate your requirements in terms of line voltage and receptacle type on your Purchase Order. Compressed air is required for the Cobalt 8 Platesetter. Escher-Grad provides a stand-alone air compressor that is enclosed in a noise reduction cabinet. This air Compressor requires a grounded Amps or Amps line. It also must have a dedicated electrical breaker that cannot be used for any other device. The electrical outlet must be within 36 (90 cm) from the stand-alone compressor location. The stand-alone compressor must be within 25 feet of the right rear corner of the Platesetter. Escher-Grad will accommodate any national standards of power plugs, voltages and frequencies. Be sure to indicate your requirements in terms of line voltage and receptacle type on your Purchase Order. The Rip or ImageSpool Workstation will also need a wall outlet within four feet of the Platesetter. For new line installations ask the electrician to install a four-outlet socket, otherwise a power bar will be required. A 1200VA UPS or similar line regulation unit is strongly recommended to protect your Platesetter. Please note that any mechanical or electrical damage to the system that is caused by power fluctuation, surge, or failure, is not covered by either warranty or standard service agreements. Dust & dirt control is essential. Dust defects on a plate can greatly reduce productivity. As a minimum, we strongly recommend the installation of an air-filtering unit capable of removing dust particles between 5 and 50 µm in size. Seasonal variations in humidity and temperature must be taken into consideration when planning for the Platesetter installation. You may need to install an air conditioner, humidifier or dehumidifier. When choosing an air-conditioning system, consider that the Platesetter and the RIP / Imagespool workstation can generate up to 4200 BTU/hr. Please refer to the processor installation guide for information regarding the generation of additional heat by the processor. The failsafe will reset when the room temperature has returned to the operating range. 3 Cobalt 8 Packaging Table 1 shows the crated dimensions and weight of the Cobalt 8 and the EG-8274 Air Compressor. Unpacking the Platesetter and peripherals should be done under the physical supervision of an Escher-Grad Service Engineer. However, should your company have the necessary experience and skilled staff to safely unpack the equipment, please advise the Escher-Grad Customer Services Coordinator. Once the Platesetter has been removed from the palette it is the Customer s responsibility to ensure that the equipment is moved to the designated area. The Customer is also responsible for the safe storage of all packaging and crating material. If in the advent of a future move or shipment, replacement costs of the crating and/or packaging material, and shipping charges will be borne by the Customer. Damages due to unauthorized packing materials will void your warranty. Unpacking your Cobalt 8 Platesetter You will need; A standard Philips #2 bit with reversing drill or screw driver Lift Truck capable of lifting the Cobalt8 from the palette. 4 Processing Media Please consult the Escher-Grad Web site for the up-to-date list of approved media. Examples of approved media are: AGFA Lithostar LAP-V Mitsubishi SDP Alpha V LASTRA / WESTERN LITHOTECH LV-1 FUJI Brillia LP-NV Processor The plate processing facility must be set up prior to the Escher-Grad equipment installation. Water Outlet (if required) The water supply flow rate and pressure must meet the plate processor's minimum specifications. Water Control Panel (if required) Controls the water temperature and pressure and filters dirt particles in the water.. Drain (if required) Must be close to the plate processor to dispose of rinse water. Environmental Considerations When disposing of chemicals, you must respect local, provincial, state and federal environmental laws. Silver Recovery (if required) Consult your local plate supplier. Sink Recommended for washing processor rollers and guides during processor maintenance. Safelight Each type of plate has its own specific safelight requirements. Contact your plate distributor or visit the manufacturer s web site.
