18 4. Connecting a Serial Communication Device This product can connect a RS-232C compliant serial communication device. This product can connect a RS-232C compliant serial communication device. In addition, there are two connection methods for a serial device: Transparent mode" and Virtual mode. This section describes these two connection methods Transparnet mode ( + ) RS-232C cable LAN cable RS-232C cable Touch Panel (RP-VL-R-01) (RP-VL-S-01) PC Figure Example connection of Transparent mode In the transparent mode, the serial transmission between FlexNetViewer transmitter and receiver is extended through Ethernet (LAN). As one COM port can connect one serial communication device only, only one device is supported in the transparent mode. (Notes) When multiple COM devices are connected in the transparent mode, malfunction may occur. For more details on this, refer to 4.3 Operations when multiple communication devices are connected in the transparent mode 4.2. Virtual mode (PC (Transmitting utility) + ) RS-232C cable LAN cable Touch Panel (RP-VL-R-01) HUB PC (RP-VL-R-01) Touch Panel Figure Example connection of Virtual mode In the virtual mode, the serial communication of the FlexNetViewer receiver is connected via Ethernet (LAN). A PC serial port is added to PC virtually by the virtual COM driver. As multiple COM ports can be created by the virtual driver, it is possible to connect multiple serial communication devices to one PC. CONTEC CO., LTD. 18/20 March
19 4.3. Operations when multiple communication devices are connected in the transparent mode This product can connect one transmitter to multiple transmitters according to the specifications where the transmitters and receivers are connected through LAN. Therefore, serial communication data can be sent to the transmitter from multiple receivers. However, this is not recommended as it may let the serial communication device cause unintentional operations. Here, touch panel is used as an example to illustrate the operations when multiple serial communication devices are connected. Figure is the connection figure where two receivers are connected to one transmitter in the transparent mode. RS-232C cable LAN cable RS-232C cable HUB Touch Panel (1) (RP-VL-R-01) (RP-VL-S-01) PC Touch Panel (2) (RP-VL-R-01) Touch Panel (1) byte date Touch Panel (1)+(2) Touch Panel (1)+(2) Touch Panel(2) c 3 b 2 a 1 6byte date c 3 b 2 a 6byte date 1 c b a 3byte date Date transmission direction Figure An example when multiple COM devices are connected in the transparent mode (1) Send commands to the corresponding receiver respectively from touch panels (1) and (2). Command consists of 3 byte data (*1), and a group of 3 byte data is recognized as one command. (2) Confirm the availability status of LAN line for each receiver, and output the received data to the transmitter by Non-synchronization via the LAN line through the serial communication. Therefore, the data output from the respective receiver is stored in the transmitter buffer. (3) The transmitter outputs the data pooled at the buffer to PC. In such a case, the 3 byte data recognized by PC becomes mixed between data from touch panel (1) and touch panel (2) ( 1a2 in this example), and cannot be recognized as a normal command. (*1) The byte number of the data that comprise the command varies depending on your device. For details, consult the manufacturer of you device. 3 byte date recognized by PC CONTEC CO., LTD. 19/20 March
20 5. Configuration Examples to Connect Multiple Touch Panels 1 touch panel that complies with RS-232C standard can be connected to the receiver of this product. Though multiple touch panels can be connected by obtaining multiple receivers, doing so may cause user-invisible operation as described in the previous chapter. This chapter describes the configuration example to connect multiple touch panels for preventing against the user-invisible operation. In the configuration examples, touch panel 1, touch panel available request SW 1, LED 2 (green, red) are connected to each receiver. Green LED displays the touch panel availability. Red LED displays the status that the touch panel is being used by the other device. Create the application to monitor and control digital I/O by using the function library. The following description shows an example of application. 1. ON/OFF state of SW connected to digital input of each receiver is monitored by PC and then the receiver that SW is on is determined. 2. In the receiver that SW is ON, connected LED (green) is turned on and then the touch panel availability is displayed. 3. In all the receivers that SW is not ON, connected LED (red) is turned on and then it shows that the touch panel is being used by the other receiver. 4. AS touch panel user, operate the touch panel only when LED (green) is turned on and prevent touch panel from malfunction. Switch LED Digital I/O is connected with PC by using LAN cable.
