Statement 1: DANGER Electrical current from power, telephone, and communication cables is hazardous. To aoid a shock hazard: Do not connect or disconnect any cables or perform installation, maintenance, or reconfiguration of this product during an electrical storm. Connect all power cords to a properly wired and grounded electrical outlet. Connect to properly wired outlets any equipment that will be attached to this product. When possible, use one hand only to connect or disconnect signal cables. Neer turn on any equipment when there is eidence of fire, water, or structural damage. Disconnect the attached power cords, telecommunications systems, networks, and modems before you open the deice coers, unless instructed otherwise in the installation and configuration procedures. Connect and disconnect cables as described in the following table when installing, moing, or opening coers on this product or attached deices. To Connect: 1. Turn eerything OFF. 2. First, attach all cables to deices. 3. Attach signal cables to connectors. 4. Attach power cords to outlet. 5. Turn deice ON. To Disconnect: 1. Turn eerything OFF. 2. First, remoe power cords from outlet. 3. Remoe signal cables from connectors. 4. Remoe all cables from deices. Safety ii

10 Statement 2: CAUTION: When replacing the lithium battery, use only IBM Part Number 33F8354 or an equialent type battery recommended by the manufacturer. If your system has a module containing a lithium battery, replace it only with the same module type made by the same manufacturer. The battery contains lithium and can explode if not properly used, handled, or disposed of. Do not: Throw or immerse into water Heat to more than 100 C (212 F) Repair or disassemble Dispose of the battery as required by local ordinances or regulations. Statement 3: CAUTION: When laser products (such as CD-ROMs, DVD dries, fiber optic deices, or transmitters) are installed, note the following: Do not remoe the coers. Remoing the coers of the laser product could result in exposure to hazardous laser radiation. There are no sericeable parts inside the deice. Use of controls or adjustments or performance of procedures other than those specified herein might result in hazardous radiation exposure. DANGER Some laser products contain an embedded Class 3A or Class 3B laser diode. Note the following. Laser radiation when open. Performance, ease of use, and reliability were key considerations in the design of your serer. These design features make it possible for you to customize the system hardware to meet your business needs. Your serer comes with a limited warranty. 16 What your serer offers Your serer uses the following features and technologies: IBM Director IBM Director is a workgroup-hardware-management tool that you can use to centrally manage xseries serers. For more information about IBM Director, see the IBM Director User s Guide on the IBM xseries Documentation CD. IBM Enterprise X-Architecture technology IBM X-Architecture technology combines proen, innoatie IBM designs to make your Intel -processor-based serer powerful, scalable, and reliable. For more information, go to Large system-memory capacity The memory bus supports up to 4 GB of system memory. The memory controller supports error correcting code (ECC) for up to four industry-standard PC2700/3200, 2.5 V, 184-pin, registered, double-data-rate (DDR), synchronous dynamic random access memory (SDRAM) dual inline memory modules (DIMMs). IBM SererGuide Setup and Installation CD The SererGuide Setup and Installation CD that comes with your serer proides programs to help you set up your serer and install a 32-bit Windows operating system. The SererGuide program detects installed hardware options and proides the correct configuration programs and deice driers. For more information about the SererGuide Setup and Installation CD, see Using the SererGuide Setup and Installation CD on page 11. Integrated network support Your serer comes with an integrated Intel Gigabit Ethernet controller, which supports connection to a 10-Mbps, 100-Mbps, or 1000-Mbps network. For more information, see Configuring the Gigabit Ethernet controllers on page 22. Large data-storage capacity Your serer supports up to two 25.4-mm (1-inch) slim-high, 3.5-inch hard disk dries (serial adanced technology attachment (ATA) or SCSI, depending on serer model). 17 Reliability, aailability, and sericeability features IBM Director Three important computer design features are reliability, aailability, and sericeability (RAS). The RAS features help to ensure the integrity of the data that is stored in your serer, the aailability of the serer when you need it, and the ease with which you can diagnose and repair problems. 19 Serer controls, LEDs, and power This section describes the controls and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and how to turn the serer on and off. Front iew The following illustration shows the controls and LEDs on the front of the serer. CD-eject button CD-ROM drie actiity LED Diskette drie actiity LED Diskette-eject button System-error LED System-locator LED Hard disk drie actiity LED Power-on LED Power-control button Reset button CD-eject button: Press this button to release a CD from the CD-ROM drie. CD-ROM drie actiity LED: When this LED is lit, it indicates that the CD-ROM drie is in use. Diskette drie actiity LED: When this LED is lit, it indicates that the diskette drie is in use. Diskette-eject button: Press this button to release a diskette from the diskette drie. System-error LED: When this LED is lit, it indicates that a system error has occurred. System-locator LED: Use this blue LED to isually locate the serer if it is in a location with numerous other serers. If your serer supports IBM Director, you can use IBM Director to light this LED remotely. Hard disk drie actiity LED: When this LED is flashing, it indicates that a hard disk drie is in use. Power-on LED: When this LED is lit and not flashing, it indicates that the serer is turned on. When this LED is flashing, it indicates that the serer is turned off and still connected to an ac power source. When this LED is off, it indicates that ac power is not present, or the power supply or the LED itself has failed. If this LED is off, it does not mean that there is no electrical power in the serer. The LED might be burned out. To remoe all electrical power from the serer, you must disconnect the power cord from the electrical outlet. Power-control button: Press this button to turn the serer on and off manually. Reset button: Press this button to reset the serer and run the power-on self-test (POST). You might hae to use a pen or the end of a straightened paper clip to press the button. Rear iew The following illustration shows the LEDs on the rear of the serer. Chapter 1. 20 Ethernet 1 transmit/receie actiity LED Ethernet 1 speed 1 Gbps LED Ethernet 2 speed 1 Gbps LED Ethernet 2 transmit/receie actiity LED Ethernet 1 transmit/receie actiity LED: This LED is on the Ethernet connector. When this LED is lit, it indicates that there is actiity between the serer and the network. Ethernet 1 speed 1 Gbps LED: This LED is on the Ethernet connector. When this LED is lit, it indicates that the Ethernet network speed is 1 Gbps. When this LED is off, it indicates that the Ethernet network speed is 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps. Ethernet 2 speed 1 Gbps LED: This LED is on the Ethernet connector. When this LED is lit, it indicates that the Ethernet network speed is 1 Gbps. When this LED is off, it indicates that the Ethernet network speed is 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps. Ethernet 2 transmit/receie actiity LED: This LED is on the Ethernet connector. 21 Serer power features When the serer is connected to an ac power source but is not turned on, the operating system does not run, and all core logic except for the serice processor is shut down; howeer, the serer can respond to requests from the serice processor, such as a remote request to turn on the serer. The power-on LED flashes to indicate that the serer is connected to ac power but is not turned on. Turning on the serer Approximately 20 seconds after the serer is connected to ac power, the power-control button becomes actie, and you can turn on the serer and start the operating system by pressing the power-control button. The serer can also be turned on in any of the following ways: If a power failure occurs while the serer is turned on, the serer will restart automatically when power is restored. If the serer is connected to an Adanced System Management interconnect network that contains at least one serer with an optional Remote Superisor Adapter II installed, the serer can be turned on from the Remote Superisor Adapter II user interface. If your operating system supports the system-management software for an optional Remote Superisor Adapter II, the system-management software can turn on the serer. If your operating system supports the Wake on LAN feature, the Wake on LAN feature can turn on the serer. Note: When 4 GB or more of memory (physical or logical) is installed, some memory is resered for arious system resources and is unaailable to the operating system. The amount of memory that is resered for system resources depends on the operating system, the configuration of the serer, and the configured PCI options. Turning off the serer When you turn off the serer and leae it connected to ac power, the serer can respond to requests from the serice processor, such as a remote request to turn on the serer. To remoe all power from the serer, you must disconnect it from the power source. Some operating systems require an orderly shutdown before you turn off the serer. 22 Statement 5: CAUTION: The power control button on the deice and the power switch on the power supply do not turn off the electrical current supplied to the deice. The deice also might hae more than one power cord. To remoe all electrical current from the deice, ensure that all power cords are disconnected from the power source. 2 1 The serer can be turned off in any of the following ways: You can turn off the serer from the operating system, if your operating system supports this feature. After an orderly shutdown of the operating system, the serer will be turned off automatically. You can press the power-control button to start an orderly shutdown of the operating system and turn off the serer, if your operating system supports this feature. If the operating system stops functioning, you can press and hold the power-control button for more than 4 seconds to turn off the serer. If the serer is connected to an Adanced System Management interconnect network that contains at least one serer with an optional Remote Superisor Adapter II installed, the serer can be turned off from the Remote Superisor Adapter II user interface. If an optional Remote Superisor Adapter II is installed in the serer, the serer can be turned off from the Remote Superisor Adapter II user interface. If the Wake on LAN feature turned on the serer, the Wake on LAN feature can turn off the serer. 23 Chapter 2. Configuring the serer The following configuration programs and capabilities are proided with your serer: IBM SererGuide Setup and Installation CD The SererGuide program proides software-setup tools and installation tools that are designed for your serer. Use this CD during the installation of your serer to configure basic hardware features and to simplify the installation of your operating system. For information about using this CD, see Using the SererGuide Setup and Installation CD. Configuration/Setup Utility program The Configuration/Setup Utility program is part of the basic input/output system (BIOS) code in your serer. Use it to configure serial port assignments, change interrupt request (IRQ) settings, change the startup-deice sequence, set the date and time, and set passwords. For information about using this utility program, see Using the Configuration/Setup Utility program on page 13. SCSISelect Utility program Use the SCSISelect Utility program to configure deices that are attached to the SCSI controller (SCSI models only). For information about using this utility program, see Using the SCSISelect Utility program (SCSI models only) on page 18. Adaptec HostRAID configuration programs Adaptec RAID Configuration Utility programs (for Serial ATA HostRAID) Use the Array Configuration Utility within the Adaptec RAID Configuration Utility programs to configure the integrated Serial ATA (SATA) controller with integrated RAID and the deices that are attached to it. For more information about using these utility programs, see Using the Adaptec RAID Configuration Utility programs (for Serial ATA HostRAID) on page 20. SCSI HostRAID feature of the SCSISelect Utility program Use the SCSI HostRAID feature of SCSISelect Utility program to configure the SCSI controller with integrated RAID and the deices that are attached to it. For more information about using this utility program, see Using the SCSISelect Utility program (for SCSI HostRAID) on page 21. Ethernet controller configuration For information about configuring the Ethernet controllers, see Configuring the Gigabit Ethernet controllers on page 22. Using the SererGuide Setup and Installation CD The SererGuide Setup and Installation CD includes an easy-to-use setup and installation program that is designed for your IBM serer. The SererGuide program detects the serer model and hardware options that are installed and uses that information during setup to configure the hardware. The SererGuide program simplifies operating-system installations by proiding updated deice driers and, in some cases, installing them automatically. Note: The SererGuide program works only with 32-bit Windows operating systems. If the SererGuide Setup and Installation CD did not come with your serer, you can download the latest ersion of the SererGuide program. The SererGuide program requires a supported IBM serer with an enabled startable (bootable) CD-ROM drie. In addition to the SererGuide Setup and Installation CD, you must hae your operating-system CD to install your operating system. The SererGuide program has the following features: Sets system date and time Detects the SCSI RAID adapter, controller, or integrated SCSI controller with RAID capabilities and runs the SCSI RAID configuration program (with LSI chip sets for SereRAID adapters only) Checks the microcode (firmware) leels of a SereRAID adapter and determines whether a later leel is aailable from the CD Detects installed hardware options and proides updated deice driers for most adapters and deices Proides diskette-free installation for supported Windows operating systems Includes an online readme file with links to tips for your hardware and operating-system installation Setup and configuration oeriew When you use the SererGuide Setup and Installation CD, you do not need setup diskettes. You can use the CD to configure any supported IBM serer model. The setup program proides a list of tasks that are required to set up your serer model. On a serer with a SereRAID adapter or integrated SCSI controller with RAID capabilities, you can run the SCSI RAID configuration program to create logical dries. Note: Features and functions can ary slightly with different ersions of the SererGuide program. When you start the SererGuide Setup and Installation CD, the program prompts you to complete the following tasks: Select your language. 12 xseries 306 Type 8836: User s Guide

25 Select your keyboard layout and country. View the oeriew to learn about SererGuide features. View the readme file to reiew installation tips for your operating system and adapter. Start the operating-system installation. You will need your operating-system CD. Typical operating-system installation You can use the SererGuide program to shorten your installation time. The SererGuide program proides the deice driers that are required for your hardware and for the operating system that you are installing. This section describes a typical SererGuide operating-system installation. Note: Features and functions can ary slightly with different ersions of the SererGuide program. 1. After you hae completed the setup process, the operating-system installation program starts. (You will need your operating-system CD to complete the installation.) 2. The SererGuide program stores information about the serer model, serice processor, hard disk drie controllers, and network adapters. Then, the program checks the CD for newer deice driers. This information is stored and then passed to the operating-system installation program. 3. The SererGuide program presents operating-system partition options that are based on your operating-system selection and the installed hard disk dries. 4. The SererGuide program prompts you to insert your operating-system CD and restart the serer. At this point, the installation program for the operating system takes control to complete the installation. Installing your operating system without SererGuide If you hae already configured the serer hardware and you decide not to use the SererGuide program to install your operating system, complete the following steps to download the latest operating-system installation instructions from the IBM Support Web page: 1. Go to 2. In the Download section, click Downloads & driers. 3. On the Downloads and driers page, in the Brand field, select Serers. 4. In the Family field, select xseries Click Continue. 6. In the View by document type field, select OS installation. 7. Select the instructions for your operating system. Using the Configuration/Setup Utility program Use the Configuration/Setup Utility program to: View configuration information View and change assignments for deices and I/O ports Set the date and time Set and change passwords Set and change the startup characteristics of the serer and the order of startup deices (startup-drie sequence) Set and change settings for adanced hardware features Chapter 2. 26 View, set, and change settings for power-management features View and clear the error log Enable USB keyboard and mouse support Starting the Configuration/Setup Utility program Complete the following steps to start the Configuration/Setup Utility program: 1. Turn on the serer. 2. When the prompt Press F1 for Configuration/Setup appears, press F1. If you hae set both a user (power-on) password and a superisor (administrator) password, you must type the superisor password to access the full Configuration/Setup Utility menu. If you do not type the superisor password, a limited Configuration/Setup Utility menu is aailable. 3. Follow the instructions on the window. 4. Select settings to iew or change. Configuration/Setup Utility menu choices The following choices are on the Configuration/Setup Utility main menu. Depending on the ersion of the BIOS code in your serer, some menu choices might differ slightly from these descriptions. System Summary Select this choice to iew configuration information, including the type, speed, and cache sizes of the microprocessors and the amount of installed memory. When you make configuration changes through other options in the Configuration/Setup Utility program, the changes are reflected in the system summary; you cannot change settings directly in the system summary. This choice is on the full and limited Configuration/Setup Utility menu. System Information Select this choice to iew information about your serer. When you make changes through other options in the Configuration/Setup Utility program, some of those changes are reflected in the system information; you cannot change settings directly in the system information. This choice is on the full Configuration/Setup Utility menu only. Product Data Select this choice to iew the machine type and model of your serer, the serial number, and the reision leel or issue date of the BIOS code stored in electrically erasable programmable ROM (EEPROM). Deices and I/O Ports Select this choice to iew or change assignments for deices and input/output (I/O) ports. Select this choice to enable or disable integrated SCSI and Ethernet controllers and all standard ports (such as serial and parallel). If you disable a deice, it cannot be configured, and the operating system will not be able to detect it (this is equialent to disconnecting the deice). If you disable the integrated Ethernet controller and no Ethernet adapter is installed, the serer will hae no Ethernet capability. If you disable the integrated USB controller, the serer will hae no USB capability; to maintain USB capability, make sure that Enabled is selected for the USB Host Controller and USB BIOS Legacy Support options. This choice is on the full Configuration/Setup Utility menu only. Start Options 14 xseries 306 Type 8836: User s Guide

27 Select this choice to iew or change the start options. Startup sequences take effect when you start the serer. The startup sequence specifies the order in which the serer checks deices to find a boot record. The serer starts from the first boot record that it finds. If your serer has Wake on LAN hardware and software and the operating system supports Wake on LAN functions, you can specify a startup sequence for the Wake on LAN functions. For example, you can define a startup sequence that checks for a CD or DVD in the CD-ROM drie, then checks the hard disk drie, and then checks a network adapter. This choice is on the full Configuration/Setup Utility menu only. Date and Time Select this choice to set the date and time in the serer, in 24-hour format (hour:minute:second). This choice is on the full Configuration/Setup Utility menu only. System Security Select this choice to set passwords. See Passwords on page 16 for more information. This choice is on the full Configuration/Setup Utility menu only. User Password Select this choice to set or change a user password. See User password on page 17 for more information. Superisor Password Select this choice to set or change a superisor password. A superisor password is intended to be used by a system administrator; it limits access to the full Configuration/Setup Utility menu. If a superisor password is set, the full Configuration/Setup Utility menu is aailable only if you type the superisor password at the password prompt. See Superisor password on page 17 for more information. Adanced Setup Select this choice to change settings for adanced hardware features. Important: The serer might malfunction if these options are incorrectly configured. Follow the instructions on the window carefully. This choice is on the full Configuration/Setup Utility menu only. PCI Configuration Select this choice to iew the system resources that are used by installed PCI or PCI-X deices. Adanced Chipset Control Select this choice to iew, set, and change the settings for the following menu choices: - Spread Spectrum - Spread Spectrum Selection Adanced Processor Options Select this choice to iew, set, and change the settings for the following menu choices: - Bus Frequency - Processor Speed - Hyper Threading Technology - Echo TPR ASF Configuration Chapter 2. 28 Select this choice to iew, set, and change the settings for the following menu choices: - Minimum Watchdog Timeout - BIOS Boot Timeout - OS Boot Timeout - Power-on wait time Console Redirection Select this choice to iew, set, and change the settings for the following menu choices: - Com Port Address - Baud Rate - Console Type - Flow Control - Console connection - Continue C. R. after POST - # of ideo pages to support Power Management Select this choice to enable or disable the automatic power-on feature. Error Log Select this choice to iew the three most recent error codes and messages that the system generated during POST. You can use the arrow keys to moe between pages in the error log. Select Clear error logs to clear the POST error log. If an optional Remote Superisor Adapter II is installed, the full text of the error messages will be displayed; otherwise, the log will only contain numeric error codes. Run the diagnostic program on your serer to get more information on any error codes that might occur. See the Hardware Maintenance Manual and Troubleshooting Guide on the IBM xseries Documentation CD for instructions. Sae Settings Select this choice to sae the changes you hae made in the settings. Restore Settings Select this choice to cancel the changes you hae made in the settings and restore the preious settings. Load Default Settings Select this choice to cancel the changes you hae made in the settings and restore the factory settings. Exit Setup Select this choice to exit from the Configuration/Setup Utility program. If you hae not saed the changes you hae made in the settings, you are asked whether you want to sae the changes or exit without saing them. Passwords From the System Security choice, you can set, change, and delete a user (power-on) password and a superisor (administrator) password. The System Security choice is on the full Configuration/Setup menu only. If you set only a user password, you must type the user password to complete the system startup, and you hae access to the full Configuration/Setup Utility menu. A superisor password is intended to be used by a system administrator; it limits access to the full Configuration/Setup Utility menu. 29 password, you do not hae to type a password to complete the system startup, but you must type the superisor password to access the Configuration/Setup Utility menu. If you set a user password for a user and a superisor password for a system administrator, you can type either password to complete the system startup. A system administrator who types the superisor password has access to the full Configuration/Setup Utility menu; the system administrator can gie the user authority to set, change, and delete the user password. A user who types the user password has access to only the limited Configuration/Setup Utility menu; the user can set, change, and delete the user password, if the system administrator has gien the user that authority. User password If a user (power-on) password is set, when you turn on the serer, the system startup will not be completed until you type the user password. You can use any combination of up to seen characters (A Z, a z, and 0 9) for the password. When a user password is set, you can enable the Unattended Start mode, in which the keyboard and mouse remain locked but the operating system can start. You can unlock the keyboard and mouse by typing the user password. When a user password is set, POST is not completed until you type the password. If you forget the user password, you can regain access to the serer in any of the following ways: If a superisor password is set, type the superisor password at the password prompt (see Superisor password ). Start the Configuration/Setup Utility program and reset the user password. Remoe the serer battery and then reinstall it. See the Option Installation Guide on the IBM xseries Documentation CD for instructions for remoing the battery. Change the position of the clear CMOS (password oerride) jumper on the system board to bypass the user password check. See Resetting passwords for additional information. Superisor password If a superisor (administrator) password is set, you must type the superisor password for access to the full Configuration/Setup Utility menu. You can use any combination of up to seen characters (A Z, a z, and 0 9) for the password. If you forget the superisor password, you can reset it after you change the position of the clear CMOS jumper. See Resetting passwords for additional information. Resetting passwords If you forget the user or superisor password, you can change the position of the clear CMOS jumper on the system board to bypass the user or superisor password check. This enables you to reset these passwords. The jumper location is Chapter 2. Configuring the serer 17

30 shown in the following illustration. Clear CMOS jumper (JP2) Complete the following steps to change the position of the clear CMOS jumper: 1. Reiew the safety information beginning on page. 2. Turn off the serer and peripheral deices and disconnect all power cords and external cables; then, remoe the coer. Remoe the riser-card assembly. See the Option Installation Guide on the IBM xseries Documentation CD for instructions. 3. Change the position of the clear CMOS jumper to bypass the user or superisor password check. 4. Install the riser-card assembly and the coer and connect the serer to a keyboard, monitor, and mouse; then, connect the serer to a power source. 5. Turn on the serer. You can now start the Configuration/Setup Utility program and either delete the old password or set a new user or superisor password. You do not need to return the jumper to the preious position. Using the SCSISelect Utility program (SCSI models only) Use the SCSISelect Utility program to configure SCSI deices. The SCSISelect Utility program is aailable on SCSI models only. Starting the SCSISelect Utility program Complete the following steps to start the SCSISelect Utility program: 1. Turn on the serer. 2. When the prompt <<< Press <CTRL><A> for SCSISelect Utility! >>> appears, press Ctrl+A. If you hae set a superisor password, you are prompted to type the password. 3. Use the arrow keys to select the channel for which you want to change settings. 4. When the prompt Would you like to configure the SCSI controller, or run the SCSI Disk Utilities? appears, make your selection and press Enter. 5. Use the arrow keys to select a choice from the menu. 6. Follow the instructions on the screen to change the settings of the selected items, and press Enter. 18 xseries 306 Type 8836: User s Guide

31 SCSISelect Utility menu choices The following choices are on the SCSISelect Utility menu: Configure/View SCSI Controller Settings Select this choice to iew or change SCSI controller settings. To reset the controller to its default settings, press F6 and follow the instructions on the screen. You can iew and change the following controller settings: SCSI Controller ID Select this choice to iew the SCSI controller ID, which is typically 7. SCSI Controller Parity This choice is set to Enabled and cannot be changed. SCSI Controller Termination This choice is set to Enabled and cannot be changed. Boot Deice Configuration Select this choice to configure startable-deice parameters. You must know the SCSI ID of the deice that you want to configure. SCSI Deice Configuration Select this choice to configure SCSI-deice parameters. You must know the SCSI ID of the deice that you want to configure. The sync transfer rate is the transfer rate for Ultra SCSI deices. For Ultra3 SCSI LVD deices, the maximum rate is 160 MBps; for Ultra2 SCSI deices, 80 MBps; for Fast SCSI deices, 20 MBps. Adanced Configuration Select this choice to iew or change settings for adanced configuration options. HostRAID Select this choice to enable or disable integrated RAID. Configure/View HostRAID Settings Select this choice to configure the SCSI controller with integrated RAID. SCSI Disk Utilities Select this choice to iew SCSI ID assignments or to format a SCSI deice. Select a deice from the list and read the instructions on the screen carefully before making a selection. If you press Ctrl+A before a selected drie is ready, an Unexpected SCSI Command Failure screen might appear. Restart the serer and watch the SCSISelect messages as each drie spins up. When the selected drie is ready, press Ctrl+A. Using the Adaptec HostRAID configuration programs Use the Adaptec RAID Configuration Utility programs and SCSISelect Utility to add RAID leels 0 and 1 functionality to the integrated Serial ATA controller and the SCSI controller. Be sure to use these programs as described in this document.
