5 THE MELIOS, AN/PVS-6, is a restricted, eyesafe, laser system. It may be safely operated in the classroom and on uncleared training ranges. It may be used safely during force-on-force training, including being viewed directly through magnifying optics of opposing force systems. DO NOT CHECK TO DETERMINE IF THE MELIOS IS OPERATIONAL BY LOOKING INTO THE LASER UNIT AND FIRING THE LASER. CAUTION: Although the MELIOS is a restricted eye-safe device, other Army lasers may pose a serious hazard to personnel if used improperly. Always consult the applicable technical manual prior to using any laser system. WARNING Lithium Batteries BA-6516/U These batteries, BA-5516/U and BA-6516/U, contain a gas under pressure. DO NOT heat, puncture, disassemble, short circuit or attempt to recharge, or otherwise tarnper with battery. Turn off equipment if battery compartment becomes hot. Wait until batteries have cooled before removing them. Lithium Batteries have safety vents to prevent explosion. When they are venting gas, you will smell gas, your eyes may become irritated, or you may hear the sound of gas escaping. When safety vents have operated, batteries must still be handled with care. Return batteries to Defense Reutilization and Marketing Office for disposal in accordance with DOD Handbook Ml. Nickel Cadmium Battery BB-516/U Battery BB-516/U should be handled in the following manner: 1) Do NOT dispose of in fire. 2) Do NOT short circuit. 3) Return batteries to Defense Reutilization and Marketing office for disposal in accordance with DOD Handbook M1. 6 WARNING Acetone Keep away from heat sparks and flames. Use with adequate ventilation. Avoid prolonged or repeated contact with skin to prevent personal injury. Keep container closed when not in use. High Voltage Capacitors used in the operation of this equipment are discharged at high voltages during the operation of the equipment. Do not be misled by the term low voltage. Potentials as low as 50 volts may cause death under adverse conditions. Be careful not to contact high voltage connections during the operation or maintenance of this equipment. Be sure that all capacitors are discharged and all batteries removed before disassembling the AN\PVS-6. C

Refer to the Maintenance Allocation Chart (MAC) in Appendix B for authorized maintenance tasks. The Unit Level maintainer should refer to the index for the Remove and Replace procedure page number for the item to be replaced. The Direct Support repairer should refer to the symptom index for the appropriate troubleshooting procedure. The troubleshooting chart is used to determine the module to be replaced. The index will give the Remove and Replace procedure page number. ii Change 1

9 Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION Section I. General Information 1-1 Scope. This manual covers the unit and direct support maintenance for the AN/PVS-6 Mini Eyesafe Laser Infrared Observation Set (MELIOS). 1-2 Consolidated index of Army publications and blank forms. Refer to the latest issue of DA Pam to determine whether there are new editions, changes or additional publications pertaining to the equipment. 1-3 Maintenance forms, records, and reports. a. Reports of Maintenance and Unsatisfactory Equipment. Department of the Army forms and procedures used for equipment maintenance will be those prescribed by DA Pam , as contained in Maintenance Management Update. b. Reporting of item and Packaging Discrepancies. Fill out and forward SF 364 (Report of Discrepancy (ROD)) as prescribed in AR 735-1l-2/DLAR /SECNAVINST /AFR /MCO J. c. Transportation Discrepancy Report (TDR) (SF361). Fill out and forward Transportation Discrepancy Report (TDR) (SF 361) as prescribed in AR 55-38/NAVSUPINST C/AFR75-18/MCO P D/DLAR Destruction of Army materiel to prevent enemy use. Destruction of Army electronics materiel to prevent enemy use shall be in accordance with TM Preparation for storage or shipment. Administrative storage of equipment issued to and used by Army activities will have preventive maintenance performed in accordance with the Preventive Maintenance Checks and Services (PMCS) charts before storing. When removing the equipment from administrative storage the PMCS should be performed to assure operational readiness. 1-6 Reporting equipment improvement recommendations (EIR). If your equipment needs improvement, let us know. Send us an EIR. You, the user, are the only one who can tell us what you don t like about the design. Put it on an SF 368 (Quality Deficiency Report). 10 1-7 Warranty. The equipment should be checked for warranty label restrictions to ensure warranty is not voided by maintenance action. Section II. Equipment Description and Data 1-8 Purpose and use. The AN/PVS-6, MELIOS, is used to determine the range to a target selected by the operator. 1-9 Description. (Figure 1-1) a. Mini Eyesafe Laser Observation Set (MELIOS). The MELIOS is made up of the following components: MELIOS Laser Rangefinder (MLRF), carrying case, shipping case, tripod, lens cleaning tissue, lens cleaning compound, and operator s manual. b. MELIOS Laser Rangefinder (MLRF). The MLRF is the major component of the MELIOS. The MLRF is powered by one of two 24 volt batteries; a BA-6516/U, non-rechargeable Lithium Thionyl Chloride battery, or a BB-516/U, rechargeable sealed Nickel Cadmium battery. The MLRF is made up of four modules: the Laser Module, the Optics Module, the Electronics Module, and the Compass /Vertical Angle Measurement Module. c. Carrying Case. The Carrying Case is used to carry the MLRF, two batteries, lens cleaning tissue, lens cleaning compound, the tripod, and an operator s manual. It has fasteners to attach to web gear. It is constructed of a woven nylon fabric. The cover will protect the unit from dust and rain. d. Tripod. The Tripod is used to provide a stable support for the MLRF while holding the MLRF to a height of 7.38 inches (18.7 cm). The head mechanism permits the mounted MLRF to swivel, rotate, and/or turn. e. Lens Cleaning Compound and Tissue. A plastic dropper bottle with lens cleaning compound and a package of lens cleaning tissue is provided to be used in cleaning the lens surfaces. f. Shipping Case. The Shipping Case is used to protect the MELIOS system in storage and during transportation. 1-2 Change 1

Laser Module (1) The Laser Module consists of: Laser Cavity Assembly Q-Switch Assembly Output Collimator Telescope Pulse Forming Network (PFN) Fire Switch Mirror Assembly Housing Assembly Motor Driver Assembly Flex Circuit, Laser Module Baseplate Assembly Electrical Connector (2) The Pulse Forming Network (PFN) receives high voltage from the Power Supply Module (in the Electronics Module) and charges the storage capacitor when the Charge Switch is pressed. The PFN uses a capacitor to store energy during the charge cycle. When the capacitor is fully charged, the Ready Indicator illuminates. When the flashlamp trigger signal is given, a high voltage pulse is generated across the Flashlamp. (3) When the Mode Switch (on the Electronics Module) is in the FIRST RTN or LAST RTN position and the Ready indicator is visible, the signal from the Fire Switch commands the Range Counter Module (in the Optics Module) to provide a Q-motor start signal. This start signal is connected to the Motor Driver Assembly to start the Q-Switch motor. When the motor reaches the proper speed and position, a flashlamp trigger signal is produced that discharges the stored energy of the capacitor in the PFN through the Flashlamp. Part of the laser beam output, used as an initiating pulse designated T. is shunted to the Prism Cluster Assembly (in the Optics Module). (4) When the Flashlamp triggers, it pumps the laser rod and the laser fires. The Laser, consisting of the flashlamp, laser rod Q-switch assembly and partial mirror assembly, produces an output beam. This beam travels through the Output Collimating Telescope, which is made up of a comer cube prism, telescope objective lenses, and the (visible light filter) output window. b. Optics Module 1-6 (1) The Optics Module consists of: Range Counter Module Prism Cluster Assembly Eyepiece Assembly Objective Lens Assembly Receiver Module Reticle LED Flex Circuit Assembly, Optics Module Housing Assembly, Optics Module Electrical Connector (2 ea) Test Connector

15 (2) The Optics Module receives visible light and the reflected laser energy from the target into the Objective Lens Assembly. The Objective Lens Assembly focuses the incoming visible light and reflected laser energy on the Prism Cluster Assembly. (3) At the Prism Cluster Assembly, the laser energy is diverted to the Receiver Module which provides a signal to the Range Counter Module to stop timing and convert the time into a distance for display in the Eyepiece Assembly. (4) The visible light is directed to the Eyepiece Assembly with the Reticle imposed over the target image. The Reticle, attached directly to the Prism Cluster Assembly, can be illuminated by pressing the Charge Switch, pulling the Reticle Control (on the Electronics Module) and rotating the control to obtain the desired illumination. The reticle illumination will be automatically cutoff after 8 seconds. (5) When the laser fires, the To pulse, received from the Laser Module, is used by the Receiver Module to signal the Range Counter Module to reset and start the timing circuits. (6) The Range Counter Module will provide a Q-motor start signal to the Laser Module when the Fire Switch (on the Laser Module) is pressed. If the Mode Switch position on the Electronics Module is FIRST RTN, the Range Counter Module will stop with the first return signal. If the position is LAST RTN, the Range Counter Module will display the value of the last return signal. (7) The display for range is mounted on the Range Counter Module in such a way as to be in the focal plane of the Eyepiece Assembly and will be observed at the bottom of the view in the Eyepiece Assembly. The Range Counter Module display is four digits corresponding to meters, with the last digit displayed as a zero or five only. A Ready indicator, to the left of the range digits, will be illuminated when the charge cycle is complete and until a Fire signal is given or eight seconds have elapsed. If a range is not taken within eight seconds after a Charge command, the unit will power down. A Low Battery condition is indicated by the display flashing all zeroes after the Charge Switch is pressed and until the Fire Switch is pressed. When the range value is displayed, the flashing stops. If more than one return signal is sensed by the Receiver Module during the timing cycle, a Multiple Target Indicator is illuminated to the right of the range digits in the display. (8) The Test Connector is used during repair. Two test points at the Test Connector are accessed. The ready test point is from the high voltage circuit and indicates a ready status as 5 Vdc. The reticle test point is the 5 Vdc to the reticle illuminating LED. This test point should be approximately 5 Vdc until the Reticle Control is pulled, at which time the voltage should drop to less than 2 Vdc. c. Compass/Vertical Angle Measurement Module (1) The C/VAM Module consists of: C/VAM Mode Switch C/VAM Module Housing Declination Angle Adjust pushbuttons (2) The C/VAM Mode switch has four positons: C/VAM, ZERO, DEC, and OFF. C/VAM contains the circuitry to provide target azimuth and vertical angle displays. The azimuth and vertical angle display, as well as the range display, are controlled by the Charge and Fire switches located on the Electronic Module and Laser Module. DEC. ADJ. pushbuttons allow for the correct selection of roils or degrees display and for correct Change 1 1-7

16 magnetic declination angles, when known, to be entered into the system. Vertical angle and azimuth sensors are contained in the C/VAM module while the 24 VDC power for the module is applied through the Mode Switch from the Power Supply module in the Electronics Module. d. Electronics Module (1) The Electronics Module consists of: Power Supply Module Housing, Electronics Module Flex Circuit, Electronics Module Charge Switch Mode Switch Reticle Control Electrical Connector (2) The Power Supply Module, depending on the position of the Mode Switch, supplies: 5 Vdc to the specified circuits in the Optics and Laser Modules. The 5 Vdc circuit is a precision voltage regulator using a monolithic switching regulator integrated circuit to obtain a positive 5 Vdc output. 12 Vdc to the Receiver Module circuits in the Optics Module. The 12 Vdc circuit is a precision voltage regulator using a monolithic switching regulator integrated circuit to obtain a regulated +12 Vdc output. The 12 Vdc circuit is a separate circuit from the 5 Vdc circuit. Switched 24 Vdc, battery voltage, to power the Q-motot in the Laser Module when the Charge Switch is pressed and a Q-motor start signal-is given when the Fire Switch is pressed. High Voltage for the Laser Module. The High Voltage output is produced from a flyback DC-to-DC converter circuit. The output is between 700 to 850 Vdc, adjusted by by a potentiometer located in the Laser Module. The potentiometer is used to determine the voltage level of the energy storage capacitor. The High Voltage circuit is held off until the Charge Switch is pressed. When the circu it reaches the regulation level, a Ready signal is sent to the Range Counter Module to illuminate the Ready Indicator in the Display. (3) The Mode Switch connects battery power to the Power Supply Module circuits. The Mode Switch has four positions: OFF, FIRST RTN. LAST RTN, TEST (PULL). OFF disconnects battery power from all circuits except the compass connector. FIRST RTN connects battery to all circuits (after the Charge Switch is pressed) and to the range counter to stop timing at the first return pulse, LAST RTN comects power to all circuits (after the Charge Switch is pressed) and will permit the timing to complete the full cycle and then display the value for the last return pulse, TEST (PULL) connects power to illuminate all elements and indicators in the dispkiy (after the Charge Switch is pressed). (4) With the Mode Switch in FIRST RTN or LAST RTN, the Charge Switch will initiate the charging of the PFN capacitor (in the Laser Module) and, when the capacitor reaches the set voltage level, the Ready indicator will illuminate in the display to the left of the range digits. (5) With the Mode Switch in any position except OFF. The Reticle Control will illuminate the Reticle in the Optics Module s eyepiece display when the Charge Switch is pressed. 1-8 Change 1

18 Chapter 2 UNIT MAINTENANCE Section I. Repair Parts, Special Tools and TMDE Requirements. 2-1 Repair Parts, Special Tools and TMDE Requirements. Tools required for unit maintenance are contained in the MAC, Section III. Lubrication materials are not required. Repair parts are listed in Appendix C, Repair Parts and Special Tools List (RPSTL). 2-2 Checking unpacked equipment. Section II. Service Upon Receipt a. Inspect the equipment for darnage incurred during shipment. If the equipment has been damaged, report the damage on DD Form 6, Packaging Improvement Report. b. Check the equipment against the packing slip to see if the shipment is complete. Report all discrepancies in accordance with the instructions of DA PAM c. Check to see whether the equipment has been modified or if covered under warranty. Section III. Preventive Maintenance Checks And Services 2-3 Preventive Maintenance Checks and Services. a. Preventive maintenance checks and services are limited to cleaning of the MELIOS components. Refer to the Operator s Manual. b. Lubrication Instructions. There are no lubrication requirements for the AN/PVS-6, MELIOS. 2-1

19 Section IV. Maintenance Instructions INITIAL SETUP Tools Tool Kit TK 101 Personnel Required: Maintenance Procedures. Unit maintenance is limited to the replacement of the lens cap, eyeshield plug, eyeshield assembly, mode switch knob, reticle control knob, battery cap assembly, battery cap, and charge switch and fire switch dust boots. a. Replacement of the Lens Cap. (Figure 2-1) NOTE Refer to TM for replacement of battery and neck strap. 1. Remove. Remove screw (2) from lens cap pivot. Remove and inspect screw (2), washer (3), spacer (1). Replace lens cap (4). If damaged, replace spacer (l), washer (3), screw (2). Figure 2-1. Lens Cap Replacement 2-2 Change 1

20 2. Install. Insert spacer (1) in lens cap (4) hole, apply adhesive (Item 1, App. D) to screw threads. Insert screw (2) through washer (3) and spacer (1) into MLRF. b. Replacement of the Eyeshield Plug. (Figure 2-2) 1. Remove. Remove eyeshield plug (6) from eyeshield assy. Remove screw (7), washers (5), and nut (4) from eyeshield plug. Inspect and replace screw (7), washers (5), nut (4), if damaged. 2. Remove lanyard (3): remove screw (2), washer (l), from MLRF. 3. Install. Apply sealing compound (Item 2, App. D) to screw (7) threads. Place screw (7) through a washer (5), lanyard (3) loop, eyeshield plug (6), the second washer (5), and nut (4). 4. Install lanyard (3): apply sealing compound (Item 2, App. D) to screw (2) threads. Insert screw (2) through washer (l), lanyard (3) loop (flat side of loop to MLRF), screw into hole on MLRF (lanyard will be loose). Figure 2-2. Eyeshield Plug Replacement 2-3

21 TM 1l &P c. Replacement of the Eyeshield Assembly. (Figure 2-3) 1. Remove. Remove eyeshield plug (2) from eyeshield assembly (3). Remove eyeshield assembly (3) from eyepiece assembly (1) by unscrewing eyeshield assembly (3) from eyepiece assembly (l). 2. Install. Screw eyeshield assembly (3) into eyepiece assembly (1). Place eyeshield plug (2) in eyeshield assembly (3). NOTE C/VAM Module need not be removed as shown in illustration. Figure 2-3. Eyeshield Assembly Replacement 2-4 Change 1

22 d. Replacement of Mode Switch Knob. (Figure 2-4) 1. Remove. Remove battery. Turn knob (2) for access to set screws (1). Loosen set screws (1). Pull knob (2) off shaft. 2. Install. Loosen set screws (1) in knob (2), position knob on shaft with flat of shaft to align with set screw opposite knob pointer. Tighten set screws (1) so that knob (2) cannot be pulled from shaft. 23 e. Replacement of Reticle Control Knob. (Figure 2-5) 1. Remove. Remove battery. Turn knob (2) for access to set screws (1). Loosen set screws (1). Full knob (2) off shaft. 2. Install. Loosen set screws (1) in knob (2), position knob on shaft with flat of shaft to align with either set screw. Tighten set screws (1) so that knob (2) cannot be pulled from shaft. Figure 2-5. 24 f. Replacement of Battery Cap Assembly. (Figure 2-6) 1. Remove. Turn Mode Switch to OFF. Remove screw (1) and detach end of lanyard (3) from the battery cap (2). Unscrew the battery cap (2) horn Electronics Module. Remove screw (4), flat washer (5), and lock washer (6). Remove lanyard (3) from Electronics Module. 2. Install. Ensure O-ring is positioned inside the battery compartment and screw battery cap (2) into Electronics Module. Apply sealing compound (Item 9, Appendix D) to threads of screw (1) and attach end of lanyard (3) to battery cap. Tighten screw until it contacts lanyard lug then loosen approximately one-half turn. General Direct support maintenance consists of troubleshooting, replacement of major modules (Laser, Optics, Electronics and C/VAM), and module gaskets on the MLRF. 3-2 Authorized Maintenance. Authorized direct support maintenance is listed in the Maintenance Allocation Chart (MAC) Appendix B. Section II. Repair Parts, Special Tools and TMDE Requirements. 3-3 Tool Requirements. Tools required for direct support maintenance are contained in the MAC, Section III. Lubrication materials are not required. Repair parts are listed in Appendix C, Repair Parts and Special Tools List (RPSTL). 3-4 Troubleshooting. Section III. Troubleshooting a. This section provides troubleshooting procedures as a guide for locating and correcting malfunctions. Use of these procedures will reduce delays and maintenance downtime and will minimize unnecessary replacement of Modules. After locating a specific problem in the Symptom Index, complete identified procedure to correct the problem. When a replacement is performed, you must demonstrate that the original problem has been corrected by performing an operational check. b. Troubleshooting of the MLRF is done while observing the display and attempting to range to a target at a distance of 50 meters or greater. Follow the test steps in the Symptom Index Table 3-1 to determine the symptoms. Match the number in the procedure column with the procedure in the Troubleshooting Procedures, Table 3-2, for probable cause and corrective action. Change 1 3-1

Direct support maintenance of the MLRF consists of removing and replacing the major Modules (Electronics, Optics, Laser, and C/VAM Modules) and replacing the gasket between the Electronics Module and the Optics Module. Replace Laser Module (Figure 3-4) WARNING Do not remove eight Phillips head screws securing housing of Laser Module to base plate because dangerous voltages can exist on high voltage capacitor in this module, even after battery is disconnected which could cause personal injury. 1. Remove Laser Module. Turn Mode Switch to OFF. Unscrew battery cap and remove battery. Temporarily replace battery cap. Rotate lens cap away from objective lens and laser window. Remove neck strap from Laser Module. Remove six socket head screws (1) and six flat washers (2). Inspect screws, replace if damaged. Pull Laser Module (3) away from Optics Module (6) until connector disengages. 2. Inspect Safety Switch. Inspect Safety Switch (4) of replacement Laser Module, if plunger does not extend above top surface, replace Laser Module. 3. Clean To Windows. Inspect To windows (5) and clean if necessary by dampening a folded lens cleaning tissue with lens cleaning compound (Item 3 and 4, App. D). Lightly and slowly wipe To windows (5), after one stroke discard tissue, repeat this procedure until both windows are clean. NOTE C/VAM Module need not be removed as shown in illustration. 47 Appendix B MAINTENANCE ALLOCATION CHART Section I. Introduction B-1. General. This section provides a summary of the maintenance operations for the AN/PVS-6. It authorizes levels of maintenance for specific maintenance functions on repairable items and components and the tools and equipment required to perform each function. This appendix may be used as an aid in planning maintenance operations. B-2. Maintenance Function. Maintenance functions will be limited to and defined as follows: a. Inspect. To determine the serviceability of an item by comparing its physical, mechanical and/or electrical characteristics with established standards through examination. b. Test. To verify serviceability and detect incipient failure by measuring the mechanical or electrical characteristics of an item and comparing those characteristics with prescribed standards. c. Service. Operations required periodically to keep an item in proper operating condition, i.e., to clean (decontaminate), to preserve, to drain, to paint, or to replenish fuel, lubricants, hydraulic fluids, or compressed air supplies. d. Adjust. To maintain, within prescribed limits, by bringing into proper or exact positiong or by setting the operating characteristics to the specified parameters. e. Align. To adjust specified variable elements of an item to bring about optimum or desired performance. f. Calibrate. To determine and cause connections to be made or to be adjusted on instruments or test measuring and diagnostic equipments used in precision measurement. Consists of comparisons of two instruments, one of which is a certified standard of known accuracy, to detect and adjust any discrepancy in the accuracy of the instrument being compared. g. Install. The act of emplacing, seating, or fixing into position an item, part or module (component or assembly) in a manner to allow the proper functioning of the equipment or system. h. Replace. The act of substituting a serviceable like type part subassembly, or module (component or assembly) for an unserviceable counterpart. i. Repair. The application of maintenance services (inspect test service, adjust, align, calibrate, replace) or other maintenance actions (welding, grinding, riveting, straightening, facing, remachining, or resurfacing) to restore serviceability to an item by correcting specific damage, fault, malfunction or failure in a part, subassembly, module (component or assembly), end item, or system. That maintenance effort (service/action) necessary to restore an item to a completely serviceable/operational condition as prescribed by maintenance standards (i.e., DMWR) in appropriate technical publications. Overhaul is normally the highest degree of maintenance performed by the Army. Overhaul does not normally return an item to like new condition. k. Rebuild. Consists of those services/actions necessary for the restoration of unserviceable equipment to a like new condition in accordance with original manufacturing standards. Rebuild is the highest degree of material maintenance applied to Army equipment. The rebuild option includes the set of returning to zero those age measurements (hours, miles, etc.) considered in classifying Army equipments/components. B-3. Column Entries. a. Column 1, Group Number. Column 1 lists group numbers, the purpose of which is to identify components, assemblies, subassemblies, and modules with the next higher assembly. b. 81 GLOSSARY Charge Switch The Charge Switch connects the battery to the charging circuit. When the charging is completed, the Ready indicator displays (four) 8 s) in the eyepiece. The unit will shut down, if the Fire Switch is not pressed, eight seconds after the Charge Switch is pressed. Pressing the Charge Switch while in the TEST position will display four eights in the range display.
