Swimming in the Hybrid Storage Pool -Getting past SSD emulation of Disk Drives A User Perspective Ravi Chari Senior Staff Engineer Advanced Technology- Disk Drive Engineering Sun Microsystems December 11, 2008 IDEMA Technical Symposium
Acknowledgements Inspiration for this presentation was a blog by Adam Leventhal at Sun. (Monday Dec 01, 2008, Titled: Casting the shadow of the Hybrid Storage Pool)
What a difference just 2 years make! Dec. 5, 2007 IDEMA Conference Key points from my presentation- What will PMR do to Storage? 2007 will be the transition year after which PMR will become a basic design component. PMR is the key to Moore's Law Of Storage > Addresses competing technologies well > Solid state at low capacity end, Optical at high end > Optimum Trade Off for Cost vs. Time to First Byte. PMR is the Key Enabler for new Disruptive Storage Architectures for new Tiered Storage Paradigms
SATA Nearline with New Storage Architectures will have compelling applications... Sun Thumper -with 48 Drives & ZFS file system in 4U rack. SFF matches Server needs best. Expect quick transition. Other technologies- SSD can change Laptop & Desktop marketplace, Enterprise is well suited for PMR disk drives. What is the Impact of Higher Areal Density? More Bytes, Less Watts, Less Space More Data- more data loss, more redundancy More Data management needs
Hierarchical Storage Management Management based on devices organized in the order of increasing time to access a random data element. From System Designers' Point of View A Classical Wikipedia example: core random access memory (ram), fixed head drums, movable head disk packs and magnetic tape!! From Disk Drive Manufacturers' point of view the Hierarchy is: Mission Critical, Enterprise class Business Critical, Nearline class Virtual Tape, Archival class Desktop, Mobile, Endurance, CE - Personal Storage class Which look more like Market Segmentation by $$ for Time To First Byte. Enter SSD
Hierarchical Storage Management- SSD Opportunity
Rationale for SSD to Emulate Disk Drive- Heir to the Throne SSD meets & beats Disk Drives in everything Performance, Reliability, Power, Volume except $$$..for now And, SSDs can only get better Then they will rule Goodbye Rotating Rust* Goodbye Mechanical Dinosaur** There are only TWO kinds of disk drives right? Those that have failed and those that are about to!*** My Professor told me disk drives would be Obsolete in 5 years **** * Iron Oxide? Plated Media corrosion nearly killed a few drive companies. Sputtered media is anything but rust. ** FDB motors fail due to Oil Evaporation in 15 years? I haven t heard of Pivot bearing failures at all *** Where did the 0.5% AFR (1.6MHr MTBF) come from? SSD are triumphantly advertising 2 Times the Reliability. **** in 1969
Disk Drives aren t going to abdicate Even as SSD prices drop, 500GB (2.5 ) and 2 TB (3.5 ) Disk Drives are on their way drives are power and streaming data) performance competitive. Storage System Architecture is undergoing major review. New Open Storage initiatives to use all Storage Assets effectively New Open Source Software like ZFS with Storage Administration features that run on Open Source OS (Linux, Solaris etc.) are being introduced. And along the way, the rules are changing Anything GREEN. UNIFIED STORAGE No system & storage boundaries. PROVISIONING Add and allocate Storage transparently RESOURCE MANAGEMENT- Monitor and manage TRIPS adaptively Time to Data, Reliability, Data Integrity, Power and Security (TRIPS)
Hybrid Storage Pool Old hierarchy is out. Bring out the best in all. Meet the needs of the users No storage architect needed Adaptive management Add/ allocate storage Change config. dynamically. Monitor & manage Analytics tools for tuning Failures as non-events Fault management built in.
Storage System Architecture Implications Time to data (first byte) is relevant not only for performance, but also for Power management ( Green) decisions data ( serial response) is a major new implication, which has been secondary until now Reliability is just a fault management parameter Data Integrity is neither good nor bad metric. Eg. Audio/Video Power management is the newest metric- tied to provisioning, resource management, state transition performance etc. Security is a competitive value add.
--THANK YOU-- Swimming In the Hybrid Storage Pool Disclosures I work for Sun Microsystems, so the presentation is likely to be slightly biased... but I am not in marketing and I don't design the stuff I am just an observer... Here are the Sun websites & blog sites from which I lifted ideas and images To appear unbiased, I will also refer you to info on other websites:there
