2 An Introduction The MSR BASIC and MSR NANO are both portable magnetic stripe card readers. They utilize 3.7V Lithium Ion batteries and can run for more than 30 days with the included 40 mah battery. Furthermore, the readers both contain an internal clock which will time stamp all dated recorded. For greater accuracy, both readers read interrupted swipes in either direction, providing accurate reads even with jittering. For your security, both readers have hardware level password security and data encryption. They have both been developed to read all three tracks of any magnetic stripe card. The included memory can store in excess of 30,000 cards. Connectors Wire colours may not be correct in all circumstances. Please only reference wire location on PCB. MSR BASIC MSR NANO

3 What s Included MSR BASIC or MSR NANO White Plastic Rail USB Data Cable USB Charger Cable 40 mah Lithium Ion Battery The USB Data Cable and the USB Charger Cable are specifically labeled. Use of the incorrect cable or a cable from another manufacturer may void your warranty and damage your magnetic stripe reader. Our readers are compatible with many other magnetic read heads. However, their use and installation are at your own risk. Damage to the magnetic stripe reader from poor installation is not covered under warranty. Getting Started Please remember these are delicate card readers so when using them please be careful. When you first receive your card reader remove it from the bubble wrap sleeve and inspect the wires. They should be connected to the USB plug (MSR Nano only, MSR Basic USB plug is already connected to the main PCB), Battery connector, and magnetic read head. Take your battery and connect it to the connector. It should be connected as shown in the photo below:

4 Press them firmly together. When they are correctly connected they will look like this: When the battery is initially connected to the card reader the LED on the card reader will flash a single time. This means the battery is connected and the card reader is ready to use. When disconnecting the battery ONLY disconnect by separating the white connectors. Do not pull on the wires as this may cause them to come loose or disconnect potentially damaging the card reader. How to Charge your MSR BASIC or MSR NANO 1. Connect the USB Charger Cable to a USB source with 5V DC power. 2. Then connect the other end of the cable to your MSR BASIC or MSR NANO. You should anticipate a red LED indicating that the device is charging. 3. With some batteries the LED may not turn off to indicate that the charging is finished. On larger batteries the LED with turn off when the charging is finished.

5 Connecting your MSR BASIC or MSR NANO to the computer 1. Download the appropriate software from our website at 2. You will first need to install the USB Drivers. They are labeled as such and compatible with computers using the Windows Operating System. 3. After the drivers are finished installing, you may start the software. It is labeled MSRTron.exe. 4. Connect your MSR Basic or MSR Nano to your computer using the USB Data Access cable. 5. Upon starting the software it will prompt you for a password, the default password is Magencoders Features Initialization This will clear all data stored on the magnetic stripe reader. Set Time This will update the clock on the magnetic stripe reader with your computer s system time. Get Time This will show you the time the card reader is currently set. Record Number This will tell you the number of swipes the magnetic stripe reader has recorded. Download Record This will download the data held by the magnetic stripe reader on to your computer. The data will show Blank for no data and Error when the read was not to specifications. Read from File This will read data you have saved using the download record button. Change PIN This will change the password for the device. MSR Tron is not responsible for your forgetfulness. Make sure you remember the new password. There is absolutely no way for us to reset the password for you. Clear This will clear the information on the software s display. Reset The computer will reset the magnetic card reader (i.e. restarts the MSR NANO or MSR BASIC device). This should only be used when the device appears unresponsive because this is the equivalent as a hard reboot for a computer. Update Encrypt PIN This is how you are able to set an additional layer of encryption on top of the password. It is a 32 character alphanumeric encryption key you are able to set.

6 Exit This will exit the software Troubleshooting your MSR Nano When I connect my MSR Nano to the software it continually switches between Search Device and finding my card reader. When it asks for the password it says it is incorrect. What is the problem? o This is an issue which is an easy fix. The USB connection between the MSR Nano and the USB cable is loose. This means that they are briefly being connected then disconnected because of the loose connection causing the error. What you must do is unplug your MSR Nano from your USB Data Access cable. Next, place one finger on the top of the USB connector (connected to the MSR Nano) and your thumb on the bottom. Then gently but firmly press your fingers together. Be careful because these are fragile components. What this does is makes the USB connector a tiny bit thinner so that the USB cable is able to have a more secure connection. Now, just plug the USB cable back into the MSR Nano, it will feel more firm and secure. The software should work without any problems. How do I use the white rail? o The white rail is included so that you are able to test your card reader upon receiving it while the 2 track 4.5mm magnetic read head is connected. Simply place the magnetic read head in the open space in the white rail. Then, slide your card through the rail while the magnetic read head is pressed against the card. Should I hold the read head in place with my fingers? o No, when the read head is in use do not touch it with your hands or any metal. This can decrease the quality of the read and make it so the read is much worse. Hold it in place with plastic, rubber, or any electrically insulating material.

7 After downloading the card information none of it makes sense. There are strange symbols and no card data. What is wrong? o This means the magnetic read head was placed upside down. Simply rotate the read head the other way (so the current bottom is on top). This happens when the track 1 on the magnetic read head is aligned to track 2 of the card. Simply turning the read head will solve this problem. Why is track 3 blank? o Track 3 on our MSR Nano shows blank because our connected read head is a 2 track read head. This means it only reads track 1 and track 2 on any cards. Track 3 will always show blank unless you connect a 3 track read head.
