Technology Enhanced Courtroom
For many years we have referred to evidence presentation systems as Digital, but in technical terms, the display systems use analog transmission of the video signals.
Technology Enhanced Courtroom Analog Digital
But wasn t one system sold as Digital? DOAR DEPS Digital Evidence Presentation System
It means we must consider the current world and the technology in it.
We are in a Digital Legal World!
What does that mean to the pursuit of Justice?
Analog Sunset
What is the Analog Sunset? Precisely defined, the term 'analog sunset' refers to an important part of the Advanced Access Content System, or AACS license agreement adopted by content owners and device manufacturers to protect movies and other consumer media on Blu-ray discs and certain other sources from illegal copying.
What is the Analog Sunset? Less precisely, it refers to the ongoing demise of analog connections VGA and component video on laptops, Blu-ray players, flat-panel monitors, projectors and other source, switching and display devices.
Content owners have succeeded in pushing through three industry changes: Licensed manufacturers can no longer introduce any new Blu-ray model with an analog output offering a signal of higher resolution than S-video or 480i digital video Existing Blu-ray players with high-definition analog outputs may no longer be manufactured or sold after December 31, As of January , content providers are allowed to embed a bit of code in their media which will prevent it from being played on analog systems.
What does this have to do with the Courts?? Technically nothing, we seldom show copyrighted material. BUT the manufacturers of computers and video display devices have embraced this and it is now part of our world.
BUT Soon we will use digital inputs only System designs must accommodate analog (legacy equipment) and digital input from laptop computers. Existing analog systems need to accept digital inputs (and hope no one tries to play a Blu-ray).
Digital Video 101
What is Analog Video? Analog video refers to a video signal that is transfered via an analog signal. This method of storage contains waves of red, green and blue and the number of rows are fixed.
What is Analog Video?
How does Analog Video work? Digital Video in Computer Digital to Analog Converter Analog to Digital Converter Digital Video in Display
Analog to Digital Converter
What is Digital Video? Digital video, as opposed to analog video, simply means images are saved to a digital media. For example, a video you watch on the computer is digital, but a VCR tape is called analogue.
How does Digital Video work? Digital Video in Computer Digital Video in Display
Good News - The World is moving Digital Video. Digital brings the promise of many advantages over analog technologies.
Advantages of Digital over Analog Manufactures of Computers and Displays can remove a considerable amount of processing circuitry. Signals are already digital within the electronics of virtually all A/V products. Most if not all analog-to digital and/or digitalto-analog conversation can be eliminated.
Advantages of Digital over Analog Digital signals are by nature lossless, enabling the distribution of pixel-perfect and consistent, quality images. Digital can accommodate high resolutions commonly found today such as: 1920x1200 HDTV 1080p Higher rates on the horizon
Advantages of Digital over Analog Digital signals do not require conversion electronics and so the costs will be lower for displays and computers.
Elements / Issues with digital Digital Video Security and Communication EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) DRM (Digital Rights Management)
EDID Extended Display Identification Data Developed by VESA The Video Electronics Standards Association EDID is a standard means for a display to communicate its capabilities to a source.
EDID The premise is for the display to relay its operational characteristics, such as its native resolution, to the source. This will allow the source to generate the necessary video characteristics to match the needs of the display.
EDID
EDID Originally developed for use between analog computer-video devices with VGA ports. now implemented by DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort.
EDID Issues Display devices can have various levels of EDID implementation and, in some cases, they may lack EDID information altogether. Such inconsistencies can cause operational issues (such as resolution problems) to the display device not displaying the source content at all.
Examples of Potential Issues No image is shown on the display The source device, such as a PC graphics card, or laptop, cannot read the EDID information from the display. As a result, in some cases the PC will not output any video signal.
Examples of Potential Issues The display loses the image when a new source has been selected. Hot plug detection is supported for DVI,HDMI, and DisplayPort. EDID communication problems can arise from inconsistencies in the implantation of Hot Plug Detection signaling between devices from different manufacturers.
Examples of Potential Issues Image is shown, but the source resolution does not match that of the display. A source cannot read the EDID information, so it defaults to a standard resolution such as 640x480. If the user attempts to manually set the resolution to match the display, some graphic card drivers may enforce the lower default resolution without actually changing the video resolution.
Examples of Potential Issues The source is connected to multiple displays with different native resolutions. It can only read EDID from one display. The output will be mismatched in resolution with all other displays, resulting in less then optimal image quality, or no image displayed at all.
EDID solutions Have all displays matched at the same resolution. EDID emulation It maintains consistent EDID communications with source by providing pre-stored EDID information. A user can select the desired signal resolutions, and then the desired EDID information is sent to all attached source devices.
EDID solutions EDID minder (Extron solution) It includes EDID emulation but also can communicate with the display device and automatically capture and store EDID information from the display.
Digital Rights Management
DRM (Digital Rights Management) Used by owners and holders of intellectual property to enforce restrictions on the use of their copyrighted content. the most prevalent DRM systems are: HDCP (High bandwidth Digital Content Protection) AACS (Advanced Access Content System)
HDCP (High bandwidth Digital Content Protection) It is designed to prevent unauthorized access to protected video content and to enforce restrictions on authorized playback. Enables video sources, such as Blu-Ray disk players, PCs and other media devices to undergo a three-step process to protect the video from unauthorized access.
HDCP 3 STEP PROCESS Authentication: The video source determines that all devices connected to its output are authorized and able to receive encrypted video. HDCP maximum 127 devices connected. Allows up to 7 levels of repeater devices HDCP maximum 32 devices and the maximum level of repeaters is reduced to 4.
HDCP 3 STEP PROCESS Content encryption: After the source authenticates that all downstream devices are HDCP-compliant and in good standing, and that no system size restrictions are violated, the source sends encrypted video downstream. The source periodically revises the encryption key for the video as an additional security measure.
HDCP 3 STEP PROCESS Renewability: HDCP relies on digital encryption using secret keys. The system can be circumvented if the secret keys residing in HDCP licensed products fall into the wrong hands. The HDCP administration adds a list of compromised products to video content. Video sources will read this data and compare the keys of any downstream devices against the revocation list. If any matches, no video will be transmitted
HDCP and analog outputs HDCP licensing agreement does not allow for analog video outputs on repeater or display devices but does not restrict analog outputs for sources. Blu-Ray players manufactured after 2010 can only include standard definition analog outputs. After 2013, no Blu-Ray players may be manufactured with any analog outputs.
HDCP and computers Computer DRM schemes are y for preventing unauthorized access to protected commercial video such as downloaded content. Non-commercial content can be protected with DRM, if the creator has DRM technology. The DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort outputs of computers should have no DRM restrictions when the content being played is not protected.
SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO US?
What does this mean to us? It means whatever we put into the courtroom must be done properly, if we expect it to work! It means we have to fully plan all video installations carefully. All upgrades must be designed with the future in mind.
Existing Systems -
Existing systems will need to accommodate digital video Add a Digital to Analog converter at all computer inputs.
What about Audio? HDMI carries audio embedded along with video. This needs to be removed for analog systems.
What about Audio? HDMI Audio De-Embedder Removes the audio part of a HDMI signal. Allows the video to pass through.
What does this look like?
New Systems -
There is no simple, cheap answer!
All New Systems need to be designed for Digital This means replacing the input devices, switching, distribution devices and possibly display devices. AND all the cabling is different!
All New Systems need to be designed for Digital Legacy equipment Legacy video equipment, such as older laptops and displays, will still be used and must be converted to work with digital systems.
How can this be done at lower cost? 1. Make sure all NATIVE resolutions are the same! 2. Plan your design to meet your needs and DRM specifications. 3. Recognize that, done properly, today s cost will mean tomorrow s savings!
Avoid Pitfalls Think things through. Pay attention to details. Don t accept it Unless you are satisfied! Unless you are comfortable!
