7 1. Introduction Model ASV5910 personal noise dosimeter is a dual-channel acoustic measuring instrument developed with digital signal processing technology. It adopts modular design with versatile, high performance, small size, low power consumption and some other advantages. The two channels can simultaneously measure the indexes of average sound pressure level, equivalent sound level, statistical sound level, and sound exposure level. It can also log how the sound pressure level changing over time and the classic version can do precision sound-recording. It can serve as a sound level meter, an integrating meter, a statistic analyzer, a personal noise dosimeter, a digital recorder, and etc. A basic version does not have the large-capacity memory modules as classic version does, so it does have function of logging, but with lower prices. 2. Features 2.1 Make simultaneous measurement through dual channels 2.2 Integrating measuring, SPL (sound pressure level) logging and recording simultaneously 2.3 Huge storage of 2G (for classic version only) 2.4 USB port, no need for driver 2.5 Portable and easy to fix 2.6 Flexible power-on and power-off mode 2.7 Meet hearing protection standards of many different countries 3. 43 7.Measurement of personal sound exposure The measurement of sound exposure of a worker in work place includes the following 7 steps: 1 Fully charge the attached battery; 2 Calibrate the instrument with a acoustic calibrator and inspect whether the instrument works properly; 3 Set the relevant parameters according to the place that will be measured; 4 Fix the instrument securely on worker s body; 5 Upload the measurement data in the instrument to a PC; 6 Analyze the measurement data by PC. 7.1 Charge the battery There is a lithium-ion rechargeable battery of 3.7 volt inside ASV5910. When the battery voltage is lower than 3.5V, the instrument will indicate undervoltage and should be charged in time. When the battery voltage is lower than 3.4V or continuously undervoltage for 90s, the instrument will shut itself off. If it is integral measuring when shutting off, the integral measurement will be saved first. You can charge the instrument via the Mini USB port of the instrument. There are 2 charge indicator lights beside the Mini USB port. Connect the 5V power supply to the Mini USB port, or connect the instrument to the PC USB port with a USB cable. If the red light bright, it means the instrument is being charged. When the battery is fully charged, the green light bright and the red one is off. The charging lasts about 3 hours. If both lights bright, it means the battery damaged or there are some problems in the charging circuit. To insure the batter is sufficiently charged each time before use. Should it be charged every month if it is not in use for long time, for keeping the battery service time. HANGZHOU AIHUA INSTRUMENTS CO., LTD 37
44 7.2 Calibration Calibration for one condenser microphone Calibrate the instrument each time before use. Put a 1/4 adaptor into the calibrator model AWA6221 and let calibrator covered on the microphone turn on the power supply. Enter the measurement interface (see Figure2 or Figure3). The value of LFP is being read by the instrument, the deviation of which should be within ±0.5dB of the calibrator SPL output. If the tolerance is surpassed, the instrument should be calibrated. See the following example: If the authorized calibrator SPL is 93.9dB, the LFP value read by the instrument should be between 93.4dB and 94.4dB. If the range is surpassed, press Exit key to return to the main menu; then press Left or Right key to move the cursor on 6.Cali and press Enter key to enter Calibration submenu (see Figure35). Move the cursor to the first row and press Enter key, you will enter the acoustic calibration interface (see Figure36). Let calibrator covered on the microphone turn on the power supply. Press Enter key to initiate the calibration process. A number is displayed on the lower right corner of the screen, which changes to 9 from 0 and then stops, Press Enter key and the new microphone sensitivity level is saved Calibration for two condenser microphone If the instrument is equipped with double microphones for 2 channels, the 2 microphones should be calibrated. The calibration progress is the same as in When microphone 0 is calibrated, press Up or Down key to turn to the calibration interface of microphone 1 and perform the calibration of microphone Setup of the instrument Invoke parameter combinations kept in the instrument The instrument keeps 32 parameter combinations by the producer to meet measurement standards of different countries and different measure purposes. You need only to choose the proper parameter combinations according to the measuring standards and working hours in the measured workplace. 38 HANGZHOU AIHUA INSTRUMENTS CO., LTD

Timed-start, Pause/Rerun, Auto-on/Auto-off setups, etc. will make personal sound exposure more convenient. Logging the instant value and short-time equivalent value helps to analyze how the noise varies with time. Recording helps the subjective assessment of the noise. For example, monitoring a factory which opens at 8:00, has a break from 12:00 to 14:00, closes at 18:00 and makes one week s continuously sampling. The setup of the instrument is as follows: Start mode: timed-start; start time: **-**-** 8:00:00 ; measuring time: 8h00m00s; Pause/Rerun is on, the preset time for pause is **-**-** 12:00:00 ; the preset time for rerun is **-**-** 14:00:00 ; Auto-on/Auto-off is on, preset Auto-on time at **-**-** 7:50:00, Auto-off time at **-**-** 18:10:00. After the setup, only need to fix the instrument on the sampled worker before 8:00 AM every day and remove it after 18:00 PM. The user-defined setup makes the measurement more easy and convenient. HANGZHOU AIHUA INSTRUMENTS CO., LTD 41
48 7.4 Fix of the instrument There are several fix ways on the sampled person. See the followings: 1. fixed on the safety helmet 2. fixed on the shoulder 42 HANGZHOU AIHUA INSTRUMENTS CO., LTD
49 3. Fixed it on belt, with microphone clipped on collar. 7.5 Data collection All the measuring results except the recording files, which are stored in Flash RAM in the instrument, can be reviewed by recalling results in the instrument. The instrument will let the measurement data keep in it into U disk mode. If new measurement data are logged, you can also change them into U disk mode under 3.U-Disk mode on data management menu. Then connect the instrument with a PC via a USB cable and the instrument works a U disk. Now you can copy the files in the instrument. 7.6 Processing data There are 3 kinds of files in the instrument: 1.Files of integral and statistical analysis data with.asv file extension: Can be opened by Notepad or Excel. 2. Files of logged data with.log file extension: Can be opened by Notepad or Excel. 3.Files of Recorded data with.wav file extension: Can be opened by windows media player. The 3 kinds of files can also be opened by the personal noise dosimeter software with the data turned into EXCEL format. See operations in the instruction of personal noise dosimeter management software. If further analysis of the stored data is needed, Noise View software will be helpful.
