1 Ace PLCs Velocio s Ace PLC The Ace PLCs are members of the Velocio s groundbreakg series of programmable logic controllers. These PLCs troduce revolutionary new concepts, capabilities, performance and ease of use features to the automation market. They constitute a generational leap over the staid products that have comprised the PLC world for years. Ace PLCs are the small, stand alone members of the Velocio family. They brgs credible power, a very small package and at a very low price. Many control system applications require pots of IO or less, all located very close to the PLC. For those applications, Aces are the Velocio PLCs that fit the requirements. Ace PLCs are programmable, usg Velocio s vbuilder software. The Ace connects to a PC usg a standard USB communications cable. Through this USB cable, the Ace PLC can be programmed, debugged and deployed. Direct digital puts to the Ace are any DC voltage signal between and 0 volts. If an AC signal is to be sensed, a standard optocoupled put module can be plugged to an Ace digital put port, via a standard cable. This module then provides screw termal connections for AC signal puts. Direct digital puts from the Ace are skg transistor puts. They can be used do sk to ground (turn on) any DC put up to 0V and 00mA. If AC or high current or voltage DC puts must be switched, Velocio Relay termal blocks can be connected. Ace PLCs can be configured for high speed put countg and stepper motion control. Usg vbuilder, you can configure selected digital puts for either simple high speed pulse countg or for quadrature put pulse countg. Likewise, through vbuilder, you can select digital puts for pulse and direction steppg motor motion control. The analog puts are available three ranges : 0-VDC, 0-0VDC and 0-0mA. These three ranges cover the vast majority of analog signal requirements. Resolution is bit (conversion values between 0 and 09), providg very precise measurement of most common analog signals. Other features found on some models of Ace PLCs clude thermocouple puts, analog puts and RS communications. The Ace s small size is another key feature. High end automation capabilites are packed to a PLC that fits a shirt pocket. For those systems with limited availabilty of space, the Ace can provide a solution. 5 Digital Inputs : Ace IO All Ace PLCs accept some number of digital puts. Digital puts sense bary status, such as on/off, switch open/closed, etc. The Ace PLC can terface any DC voltage signal between and 0VDC. Typical system designs utilize V, V or VDC power supplies, which are all with the Ace s signal range. Any connection to DC voltage between and 0VDC is sensed as a. Any connection to ground (or voltage below 0.8VDC) or an open connection is sensed as 0. The ground reference of the signal must be connected to the ground termal p next to signal. The last p on each digital put port connector provides a V signal (connected to the V power put) which is used by the Optocouple Input Termal modules. It can also be used to supply wettg voltage to dry contact puts. Do not connect external power to the V p on the digital put port. Digital Input Signals Protection Circuit V switch pulse transistor VDC Usg vbuilder, one high speed pulse counter can be configured for basic high speed pulse countg (one digital put), or quadrature pulse countg (two digital puts). The same signal level requirements apply, as listed above. For digital puts that are AC signals, the Ace s digital put ports can be connected to Velocio Optocoupled Input Termal Block modules. These modules terface VAC or 0VAC signals. A cable, supplied with each termal block module is then connected to the Ace digital put port. The Optocoupler Input Termal Block modules convert the AC signals to the proper DC levels to the PLC. Digital Outputs : All Ace PLCs have some number of digital puts. Ace digital puts are skg transistor puts. When switched on under program control, they complete the circuit to turn on any connected DC device up to 0VDC and 00mA. Each ouput cludes diode snubber protection, for ductive load (solenoids, relays, etc.) protection. The supply voltage, up to 0VDC, which is connected to the load devices, must be connected to the VDC termal p, next to put of the put port, to enable this protection. All loads connected to a digital put port should be connected to the same DC supply. The load power supply ground must be connected to the ground (next to signal ) of the put port. VDC VDC Output P If AC power, or higher power DC needs to be switched, the Ace s digital put ports can be connected to a Velocio Relay Termal Block module, through a Load short standard cable, supplied with the module. With a Relay module, up to 0VAC and Amps can be switched under program control. 6 Analog Inputs : Ace PLCs are available with some number of general analog puts. Ace PLC analog put terfaces are available for either 0-VDC, 0-0VDC or 0-0mA. Analog puts are normally used to connect to transducer puts. Such transducers measure some physical parameter, such as pressure, temperature, liquid level, position, ph level, or other such contuously variable measurement. The signal put should be connected to a signal put on the Ace analog port and the transducer return or ground reference le must be connected to the PLC ground, next to signal. Ace PLCs with current put analog put ports (Ace c) should be used for analog current signals between 0 and 0 ma. The two most common type of current signals are -0 ma and 0-0 ma. Full range analog signals will convert to a value between 0 and 09 ( bits). For -0mA puts, the converted value will be between 80 and 09. The Scale function vbuilder can be used to automatically convert the signal value to meangful data. Analog to Digital Converter Signal Conditiong Transducers Combation Analog Input and RS Ports : On the Ace 090 and 90 PLC, the A port (closest to the power connector) has two connectors. The four p connector terfaces three analog put signals. The three p connector is the RS port. The illustration on the right shows the connections. The analog puts are bit puts, described above. The RS port contas three connections : Signal gorund PLC transmit (must be connected to the receive p of the connected device) PLC receive (must be connected to the transmit p of the connected device) As shown the diagram, the signal ground is the p furthest from the analog signals. The PLC transmit signal is the middle of the thee p connector. Transducers RS Cable RX TX A to D Converter RS The RS port can be configured by vbuilder for a variety of baud rates. vbuilder also provides selections for the number of stop bits and parity. All RS ports support Modbus RTU protocol The PLCs are slave devices. The default device address is, but can be configured to any desired address via vbuilder. Combation Analog Inputs and Analog Outputs On the Ace 90, the F port (directly across from the A port) has a sgle connector with both analog puts and puts. The connections are as shown on the diagram at the right. The first three signals on the port are analog puts. They are bit analogs, described above. Signals and are analog puts. 7 Thermocouple/ bit Differential Low Voltage Inputs The Ace 090 PLC s F port terfaces four low level differential analog signals. These signal puts can be configured, vbuilder, for either thermocouple or differential voltage ranges. For terfacg to thermocouples, these puts can be configured for J, K, T or N type thermocouples. Connect each thermocouple to one of the four wire pairs shown the diagram on the right. The negative (red) wire should be connected to the negative put (dicated by a - sign on the diagram). The positive with should be connected to the positive connection. Each differential put can also be used to measure low level differential voltage signals. The followg ranges are available : +/- 0.V +/- 0.V +/-.0V +/-.08V In operation, the signal is converted to a floatg pot value. That value is either temperature, degrees Celcius, or volts. 8 Wire Connections to the Ace Pluggable Termal Blocks Ace units come with pluggable termal blocks, like the one shown on the on the right. Connect your wires usg the larger circular holes on the top row of the orientation shown. Lookg at the connector, the orientation shown from left to right, the eight wire positions are ground, six signal positions through, and either a no connect (analog), VDC (put) or VDC from the V power put to the PLC (put). If you have solid wire, you simply need to strip the sulation back ab /8 ch, sert each wire to the proper round connector hole and push the wire. It should push very easily and lock place. You should not be able to pull the wire back. To sert stranded wire, sert the blade of a Velocio connector tool (screwdriver) the rectangular hole directly below the connection hole which you wish to sert your wire. The screwdriver blade should be horizontal ( le with the long dimension of the rectangular hole). This will open the sprg capture connection. Simply push your wire, then remove the blade. If you pull the wire, it should be captured place and will not come. To remove any wire from the connector, use the Velocio screwdriver connector tool. Push the blade to the rectangular slot below the wire to open the sprg clamp and release the wire. Gently pull the wire, then remove to blade. Mountg Options Each Velocio PLC comes with a double sided adhesive pad for attachg to pated metals, plastics or glass. Usg this method of attachment allows you to stall the PLC very tight and unusual environments as well as place them typical electrical control panels. The adhesive is very strong and will provide a solid permanant attachment, unless extreme pressure is applied to break the seal. Alternatively, Velocio PLCs are designed to add an optional vmount DIN rail mountg adapter. The vmount adapter snaps onto the bottom side of the PLC. It can then be snapped onto a standard mm DIN rail, or can slide onto a pair of properly spaced screws. DIN rail mountg is illustrated on the right. 9 Connectg Power Power to the Ace PLC must be provided via a two position pluggable connector, cluded with the Ace unit. To connect power, sert the VDC and ground connections from a power supply to the plug, as shown the figure below. When plugged to the PLC s power connector socket, the +VDC connection is to the right, closest to the corner..
