3 Welcome The Edge Processing Unit (EPU) is a solution to the problem of transferring very large quantities of data from a radar sensor to a centralised computer running the Bloodhound application. By locating the tracker portion of Bloodhound within the EPU, the most intensive processing is carried out on-site (i.e. next to the radar sensor). The resulting output data stream is much reduced in size, by almost a factor of 30, thus greatly reducing the load on the long network connection back to the centralised computer. The Edge Processing Unit contains a compact industrial PC running a secure Linux OS and proprietary Navtech Radar tracking software. This purpose of this guide is to provide sufficient information to allow the Edge Processing Unit to be installed and integrated within a Navtech Radar sensor installation. This guide assumes that a suitably trained person has already performed a site survey and that a suitable mounting location with appropriate power supply has been arranged. CAUTION: Before performing any maintenance task ensure you are aware of Health & Safety procedures - see page 3. Electrostatic discharge (ESD) precautions The electronic circuits within the Edge Processing Unit casing are susceptible to damage by electrostatic discharge (ESD). Damage caused by ESD may manifest itself as an immediate failure or, more often, result in a shortened life span for the unit as a whole. Important precautions during installation Leave the Edge Processing Unit sealed within its anti-static protective packaging until the moment of installation. Wear an approved and tested ESD wrist strap and ensure that its main conduction plate makes full contact with your bare skin. Use an approved and tested ESD lead to connect the ESD wrist strap to a valid earthing point on the installation cabinet. Once the mounting space has been prepared for the Edge Processing Unit, open the anti-static packaging, remove the unit and mount it. Do not walk around with the Edge Processing Unit while it is removed from its antistatic protective packaging. This equipment is intended only for installation in a Restricted Access Location. The centre is staffed by a highly skilled technical team who can advise and offer support with any technical questions both pre- and post- commissioning. In the event that a fault cannot be diagnosed remotely or a repair is required, the team can arrange for your Navtech equipment to be returned to base for further diagnostic tests or repair. 4 Health and safety General These recommendations are provided as suggestions for best practice that should be applied in line with, yet subordinate to the H&S practices as stipulated by your organisation or premises where you are working. In addition to the conditions detailed in this section the Site Safety Procedures for the location where the equipment is being installed must be complied with at all times. The unit weighs approximately 1Kg. Design The design and manufacture of all equipment supplied as part of the Navtech Radar tracking and monitoring system for permanent installation is CE accredited: European Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive 89/336/EEC. EMC :2012 and Electrical Safety - IEC Maintenance Make sure that electrical supplies are properly isolated before removing any covers. The supply should be disconnected by the operation of the main isolating switch, removal of fuses or other acceptable method. A notice should be placed at the point of isolation showing:- DANGER - WORK IN PROGRESS Place a barrier or guard rail round the work area. When working on elevated equipment, make sure that all ladders and staging are secure. If necessary, wear a safety harness. Be aware of any special hazards specific to the site or location where equipment is located. Take all necessary precautions. Entwurf Für Entwurf und Fertigung sämtlicher Ausrüstungen, die als Teil des Navtech Radar Verfolgungs- und Überwachungssystems für eine dauerhafte Installation angeliefert werden, muss eine CE-Akkreditierung vorliegen: Europäische Vorschrift über elektromagnetische Verträglichkeit (89/336/EEC) EMC - EN 50293:2012 und Elektrische Sicherheit - IEC Wartung Stellen Sie sicher, dass vor dem Abnehmen von Abdeckungen die Stromversorgung ordnungsgemäß abgeschaltet wird. Die Stromversorgung ist durch Betätigung des Hauptschalters, durch das Herausnehmen von Sicherungen oder ein sonstiges akzeptables Verfahren zu unterbinden. Am Punkt der Abschaltung ist ein Hinweis anzubringen, auf dem steht: ACHTUNG! - HIER WERDEN ARBEITEN DURCHGEFÜHRT Sichern Sie den Arbeitsbereich mit einer Absperrung oder einem Geländer. Stellen Sie bei Arbeiten an hoch angeordneter Ausrüstung sicher, dass alle Leitern und Gerüste gut gesichert sind. Legen Sie nach Bedarf einen Auffang- und Haltegurt an. Seien Sie sich über besondere Gefahren im Klaren, die für den jeweiligen Standort oder den Ort spezifisch sind, an dem sich die Ausrüstung befindet. Treffen Sie alle notwendigen Sicherheitsvorkehrungen. 3

6 Mounting The Edge Processing Unit can be mounted in any orientation, however, for best results use the supplied DIN rail bracket to mount the unit vertically so that the vent holes are at the top and bottom. This will maximise convection cooling by allowing air to enter from below and exit from the top vents. Air gaps The Edge Processing Unit does not contain a cooling fan and instead relies on convection cooling by air moving through the air vents and also across the top panel (which is in contact internally with the processor s heatsink). It is essential that sufficient air gaps are left around certain faces of the units casing. The minimum recommended gaps vary depending on the orientation of the unit. Cooling vents Air gaps for horizontal placement Important - when placed horizontally, do not allow any items to be placed on the top panel. Air gaps for vertical placement Fit the supplied DIN rail mount either on the rear or underside faces. Optimum cooling occurs when the Edge Processing Unit is mounted vertically with the vents located top and bottom. IMPORTANT: To ensure optimum performance, the EPU casing must be linked to the earth of the equipment cabinet either via the DIN rail or by separate connection to either the side or base screw holes (requires an M4 bolt). Please read the ESD precautions on page 2. 5

7 Connections Connecting the Edge Processing Unit is straightforward and can be made in any order. Network connection The network connection is used to link the Edge Processing Unit with both the radar sensor and the central computer system running the Bloodhound application. Therefore, a simple network switch is required at the remote radar/epu location. The network connection can also be used directly, or via the network switch, to configure the Edge Processing Unit (see page 7). The port is auto-sensing for network speed (10/100Mbps) and also for straight/crossover cables. To connect the network port 1 Use the supplied 0.5m CAT5e Ethernet cable (or an alternative longer one, if required) to link the Network Comms port on the EPU front panel with a vacant port on a nearby network switch. To network switch (or direct link to PC for configuration) Power connection The Edge Processing Unit can operate from DC power inputs ranging from 5 to 30V although 24VDC (as per the radar sensors) is the suggested optimum. At 24VDC the maximum current draw is 250mA. Navtech recommends placing a 3A fuse in the positive supply line to the EPU between the device and the main power supply. Cable and earthing A power cable is supplied with the appropriate connector (Phoenix Contact part no ) at one end and bare tails at the other. If you are sourcing an alternative cable, we recommend a 22AWG shielded cable such as Alpha Wire 5102C or equivalent. Please note the following two earthing requirements in order to ensure that interference is minimised and potential earth loops are avoided: The shield of the power cable should be earthed at the power supply end but must remain isolated from the ground (GND/0V) wire of the cable. The Edge Processing Unit casing should be connected to the cabinet earth, either by the DIN rail or by the spare M4 threaded DIN rail mounting point (see page 5). Serial connection The serial port is used solely for configuration of the Edge Processing Unit although this task can also be carried out via the network port. The serial port uses a default speed of plus 8N1 settings. To connect the serial port 1 Connect a 9-way crossover serial cable to the female Serial Comms port on the EPU front panel. 2 Connect the other end of the cable to a serial port on a nearby computer. 3 You can now use a terminal emulator application to access the EPU (see page 7). To connect the serial port 1 Insert the power connector into the port on the left side of the EPU front panel. Use a small flat blade screwdriver to tighten the two screws to prevent accidental disconnection. 2 Connect the other end of the cable to the power supply and note the earthing requirements discussed above. 8 Configuration Network configuration To configure the key network settings you will need make a temporary network connection to the EPU. See page 6 for details. You will need a terminal emulation application such as PuTTY. For further details about logging in using PuTTY, see Appendix A. 4 The EPU Management screen should be displayed: To configure the network settings 1 Connect to EPU via PuTTY (or equivalent) see Appendix A for details. The default IP address of the EPU unit is The default user ID is navtech You should see the following welcome page: 5 To choose a menu item, either press the corresponding number or use the up/down arrow keys to move the highlight. Press Return to select. The key configuration pages are as follows: Network Info provides an overview of the current settings: 2 Enter the password and press Return. If you do not know the account password, you will need to contact Navtech Radar. 3 Enter Sudo epu-manage and press Return. 7

9 When you enter the Network Settings page, you will first be asked whether you wish to use DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol): If you need to change the default hostname, choose Change Hostname: If you choose option 1 then all network settings will be made automatically and you will be returned to the main menu. If you choose option 2, the main network settings page will be displayed: You should not need to visit the remaining options (apart from Exit) within the main menu during initial configuration: Serial Number - shows the unique S/N for the EPU. Hardware Version - indicates the version of the EPU main logic board. Reboot - Performs a hard reset on the EPU. Shutdown - Performs an orderly shutdown of the EPU. System Log - Displays internal details useful for debugging. Exit. Use the Tab key to move the highlight between areas, Use the arrow keys to move/edit the IP details within the highlight, Use the space bar to select new option, Highlight Change and press Return to save your changes. A reboot of the EPU will be required after making any changes within this page. Note: Access to a valid NTP server is vital to the correct running of the system. We strongly recommend that EPU shares the same time source (NTP Server) as the associated radar. 8

10 Installing EPU Tracker on the EPU To configure the key network settings you will need make a temporary network connection to the EPU. See page 6 for details. You will need a file transfer application such as WinSCP. To copy the EPU Tracker files onto the EPU 1 Use WinSCP (or equivalent) to copy the EPU Tracker package to the home folder. Then type the following command: sudo dpkg -i bloodhound armhf.deb Checking for an EPU Tracker licence The EPU requires a file license to run the EPU Tracker. Without a license the tracker will run for 1 hour, which is typically long enough for testing and demonstration. You can quickly check whether a licence exists on an EPU using the following method: Installing an EPU Tracker file licence Each EPU Tracker file license is unique and tied to the MAC address of EPU (see Appendix B for MAC address discovery details). Once the licence is supplied by Navtech Radar you need to copy it to the home folder and change its name. To install the (Mac) file licence 1 Use WinSCP (or equivalent) to copy the cp-spx-127-xxx.lic file to the home folder and change its unique name (based on its licence number) to a default name. Note: It is important that you type the commands shown below verbatim (apart from the initial name of the licence file, e.g. cp-spx lic, which you will replace with the name of your particular file): sudo cp cp-spx lic /var/opt/bloodhound/cp-spx.lic then sudo chown bloodhound:bloodhound /var/opt/bloodhound/cp-spx.lic 2 Once the licence has been copied over, restart the EPU. To check for an EPU Tracker licence 1 Log into EPU using terminal app (PuTTY) and type the following command in the console: sudo grep License ID /var/log/upstart/bloodhound.log The output will look like this: CpCoreTracker - License ID 127-### Where ### is the license ID number, for example If nothing is returned, then EPU does not have a valid license file. Contact Navtech Radar to obtain one - you will need to supply the MAC address for the EPU - see Appendix B for details. 9

11 Further information Appendix A - Logging in using PuTTY Using PuTTY you can log into the EPU either as a restricted user or as an administrator. This section describes both methods. Logging in as a restricted user To log into an EPU as a normal user with Putty you will need the following: The password for the user account The IP address of the EPU unit To login as a restricted user using PuTTY 1 On the session page, select SSH at the connection type. 2 Enter the EPU IP address and leave the port as You will be prompted for the username and password. The username for the standard account is navtech. Please contact Navtech Radar if you do not know the password. 5 Once successfully logged in, you will be presented with the following welcome screen. Note: The command prompt includes the hostname of the EPU so you know which device you are connected to. 3 Select the Open button. 10

12 Logging in as an administrator To log into an EPU as an administrator using Putty you will need the following: A Navtech Private Key file (.ppk file) The IP address of the EPU unit To login as an administrator using PuTTY 1 Set the auto-login username to root. 3 On the session page, select SSH at the connection type. 4 Enter the EPU IP address and leave the port as Enter the path of the private authentication key file. Use the Browse button to locate the file on disk. 5 At this point you can enter a name for this config and save it which will make it much easier to reconnect in the future. 6 When ready select the Open button. continued 11

14 Appendix B - Discovering the MAC address for an EPU The MAC address is required when ordering an EPU Tracker licence. You will find the MAC address printed on the base of the EPU module, or you can discover it using apps such as WinSCP or PuTTY. To discover the MAC address 1 Type ip addr.
