Introduction The upgrade instructions show how to remove the standard power supply and replace it with a hotplug power supply. The following steps only apply to the PRIMERGY 400 and 00 tower servers.! The activities described in these upgrade instructions may only be performed by engineers or maintenance/technical staff. Further information is provided: in the manual Safety and Ergonomics in the Operating Manual for the PRIMERGY 400 / 00 in the Technical Manual of the system board in the documentation for the boards and drives Notational conventions The meanings of the symbols and fonts used in this manual are as follows:! i Pay particular attention to texts marked with this symbol. Failure to observe this warning endangers your life, destroys the system, or may lead to loss of data. This symbol is followed by supplementary information, remarks and tips. Texts which follow this symbol describe activities that must be performed in the order shown. Texts in italics indicate commands or menu item. "Quotation marks" indicate names of chapters and terms that are being emphasized. Important notes! You should observe the safety notes in the operating manual for your server. A636-K48-Z English -
Introduction Boards with electrostatic sensitive devices (ESD) may be identified by labels. When you handle boards fitted with ESDs, you must observe the following points under all circumstances: You must always discharge yourself (e. g. by touching a grounded object) before working. The equipment and tools you use must be free of static charges. Pull out the power plug before inserting or pulling out boards containing ESDs. Always hold boards with ESDs by their edges. Never touch pins or conductors on boards fitted with ESDs. Checking the contents of delivery The upgrade kit for the hot-plug power supply consists of the following parts: Two power supply modules Power supply cage with power supply platter Safety switch right Safety switch left Locking plate Power supply cable to system board (two 0-pin ATX plugs) Power supply cable to SCSI platter (two 4-pin plugs, one of them angled down) Power supply cable to the accessible drives (five 4-pin plugs, one of them a small plug for the floppy disk drive) Signaling line for server management depending on the system board Various screws Unpack all the individual parts. Check the delivery for damage incurred during transport. Check whether the delivery agrees with the details in the delivery note. - English A636-K48-Z6--749
To upgrade the server with a hot-plug power supply, proceed as follows: Remove the door and the side cover Remove the fan Remove the power supply Install and connect signaling cable Mount safety switch and install cables Install and connect power supply cables Install power supply cage and connect power supply cables to power supply platter Install fan and removed boards Mount the side covers and the door Insert the power supply modules! Please take note of the safety information in the section "Important notes". Switch the server off.! Pull all power plugs out of the power outlets! Removing the door 3 Open the door completely (). Lift the door slightly () and remove it to the front (3). A636-K48-Z English - 3
Removing the side covers Remove the knurled screw () and push the side cover forward as far as it will go (). Fold out the housing side cover in the direction of the arrow () and remove it (). Remove the right side cover in the same way. 4 - English A636-K48-Z6--749
Removing the upper fan 4 3 Pull the connecting cable off the fan (), press on the retaining clips () and take out the fan to the side (3 + 4). Removing the power supply Pull the power supply cables off all accessible drives (floppy disk drive, CD-ROM etc.). Pull the power supply cable from the system board. Pull the power supply cable off the SCSI platter. Remove the temperature sensor on the right side. Loosen the four hexagon head screws () on the power supply. Pull the power supply out of the unit with the bracket (). A636-K48-Z English - 5
Installing signaling cable To be able to install the signaling cable, all boards plugged into the system board must be removed and then the system board rack detached and tilted. Pull off any cables plugged into the boards. 3 Press on the clip in the direction of the arrow (), remove it () and pull the board out of the slot (3). Remove all other boards in the same manner Remove the air guide over the processors. The air guide is hooked at the front and rear into the intermediate wall on the right next to the system board. Plug the signaling cable into the connection for the server management support at the bottom right on the system board. Unscrew the hexagon screws of the system board interfaces on the back of the housing. 3 Unscrew the screw on the system board rack (), push the system board rack somewhat in the direction of the arrow () and then tilt it out upward by approx. 0 degrees (3). 6 - English A636-K48-Z6--749
Route the signaling cable on the right upward on the system board and then through the cutout on the casing as with the control panel cable. Leave a sufficient cable length upward for connection to the power supply platter. 3 Fold the system board rack into the casing again () and push it back into its original position (). Fasten it with the screw (3). Screw on the interfaces with the hexagon screws again. Remount the air guide above the processors. Mounting the safety switch Mount the safety switch on the right and left on the hard disk cage with one screw each (on the left side of the smaller safety switch at approximately the level of the third hard disk, and on the right side of the larger safety switch at approximately the level of the fourth hard disk). A636-K48-Z English - 7
Installing and connecting power supply cables Push the ATX power supply cable onto the system board. Push the angled plug of the SCSI-platter power supply cable onto the SCSI platter. Push the drive power-supply cable onto all accessible drives (CD-ROM drives, floppy disk drive etc.). Installing the power supply cage First insert the power supply cage in the casing at an angle (). The power supply platter is located at the top. Now push the power supply cage horizontally completely into the casing (). 8 - English A636-K48-Z6--749
Push the locking plate in at the rear under the power supply cage () and screw the locking plate onto the power supply cage (). Mount the cage on the back of the casing with four Phillips screws (). A636-K48-Z English - 9
Connecting power supply cables to power supply platter 3 4 5a 6 5b = Safety switch left = Power supply SCSI platter 3 = Power supply accessible drives 4 = Power supply system board 5 = Signaling server management (5a or 5b depending on system board used) 6 = Safety switch right Connect the power supply cables to the power supply platter. 0 - English A636-K48-Z6--749
Inserting the upper fan and the boards 3 Replace the fan you removed before (). When doing so, make sure the fan retaining clips engage properly (). Connect the cable to the fan (3). Replace the boards you removed before ( + ). A636-K48-Z English -

Push the side cover to the back as far as the stop (). Screw the housing side cover into place with the knurled screws removed previously (). Mount the right housing side cover in the same manner. - English A636-K48-Z6--749
Mounting door Replace the door as shown above ( + ). Inserting power supply modules There are two types of hot-plug-capable power supply modules, which are easy to distinguish on the connection side (see following illustration). Both version automatically adjust to the proper voltage range.! A server may only be equipped with one type of power supply module. Mixed equipping will cause the modules to be destroyed. A636-K48-Z English - 3
Slide the latch on the power supply module upward somewhat () and insert the power supply module in the installation bay (). Lock the power supply module in place with the latch in the casing (3) and screw the latch in place in this position (4). 4 - English A636-K48-Z6--749
