Failure to use an adequate heat sink will destroy the unit. Recommended heat sink flatness <_50 µm. A dry environment should be provided when storing or operating this device at temperatures below the ambient dew point. Failure to do so will cause condensation on the unit and can destroy it. Output powers in excess of specification will accelerate device aging. Operation at higher temperatures will accelerate device aging, increase threshold current and lower slope efficiency. Care should be taken to avoid back-reflections into the device. Failure to do so can destroy the unit.

7 FAP Integrated Package The integrated FAP bar offers new possibilities for OEM products. The FAP-I consists of a standard Fiber Array Packaged bar mounted in a user friendly, environmentally sealed package that provides a complete set of commonly required accessories. The FAP is mounted on a set of thermal electric coolers (TECs). The TECs allow high resolution temperature control, regardless of the operating power of the FAP or the environmental temperature. Thermistors on the laser diode and the base plate monitor operating temperatures. A monitor photodiode completes the user interface. The FAP-I incorporates an onboard EEPROM to allow users to customize the device for their system. You can choose to write, and later read back, voltage-current characteristics, serial numbers, operating hours the possibilities are endless. The FAP-I package is carefully sealed to protect the laser diode, even if you run the device in humid environments. The laser diode electrical connections are back bias protected and electrically isolated from the external package. This package is easily integrated into rugged applications.
