5 About this Manual About this Manual Audience This manual is intended as a general reference and for use by engineers or technicians when installing an ADC Device Controller computer. Measurement Standards The following measurement standards are used in this manual: Rack Unit (RU) is an Imperial standard measurement for device height. (While also seen as U.) [RU = 44.45mm =.75 inches] 9 Rack Standard is an international standard for racking width. [9 Rackmount standard = 482.6mm] Other measures for in-document conversion: (m = 3.28ft), (0.3048m = ft), (25.4mm = in), (kg = 2.205lb) Website for length & weight conversions: Product Unpacking Notes Thoroughly inspect all articles immediately upon receipt. Any damage discovered should be cause for a damage claim against the carrier. Since contents may shift during shipping, prior to installation and rackmounting the unit, removed the top cover of the chassis and ensure all cards and the SBC are properly seated in their respective mountings. Installing the Chassis Front Panel To limit the potential for damage during shipping, the front door of the Device Controller computer is packed in its own box inside the chassis carton and must be installed on site. To Install the Door Install the front door with its right and left rack ears on the chassis prior to mounting. The eight black, flat head 4x5mm machine screws required to mount the ears are packed separately in the chassis accessories kit. 205 Imagine Communications Corp. 9 About the Device Controller-4RU hazardous materials typically used in the manufacture of various types of electronic and electrical equipment: Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, Hexavalent chromium (chromium VI or Cr6+), Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), and Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE Directive) 2002/96/EC sets collection, recycling and recovery targets for all types of electrical goods. The directive imposes the responsibility for the disposal of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) on the manufacturers of such equipment. The companies are compelled to use the collected waste in an ecological-friendly manner, either by ecological disposal or by reuse/refurbishment of the collected WEEE. Under WEEE "Users of electrical and electronic equipment from private households should have the possibility of returning WEEE at least free of charge" A Note on Device Controller Power-Up If a Device Controller is shut down and then immediately powered on, an invalid GPI Relay can be fired on startup. To avoid this issue, wait a minimum of 30 seconds after a full shut down before performing a power up of the Device Controller computer. Configuration Options GPI Outputs An Device Controller supports serial devices in the following manner: In an ADC playout automation system environment the Device Controller can support up to 64 ports. Currently up to eight PC slots can be fitted with ADC 8-Port Serial cards, supporting up to 64 high speed serial ports. Currently up to four PC slots can be fitted with ADC 6-Port Serial cards, supporting up to 64 high speed serial ports. Note: Multiple Device Controllers may be used in specific installations to provide expanded serial device support and backup functionality. All automation systems provide support to control external devices via GPI. The Device Controller provides for enhanced capabilities to support higher GPI port count for all automation systems. Network Device Control Device Controller supports multiple network interface cards to support network based control of devices. Backup (Redundant) Device Controller (Optional) Redundancy is an important part of automation. The ability to recover immediately from hardware failure in a broadcast environment is crucial. Protection against automation computer failure can be achieved through a backup (redundant) automation computer. The backup automation computer is identical to the main Device Controller and is configured the same way. 205 Imagine Communications Corp. Proprietary and Confidential 0-February-205 Page 9 of 26

10 About the Device Controller-4RU If the main automation computer fails, the backup automation computer automatically takes over the tasks handled by the main automation computer. Board Set Installation For information on installation of boards and cards reference the following documentation: ADC Board Set This document details the installation and setup of boards, cards, and devices specific to an ADC playout automation system. About CHP Power Supply Units (PSU) The power supply of the CHP chassis is a dual redundant unit with the same physical footprint as a standard AT power supply, containing two independent, hotswappable modules. Each unit is able to supply all the power requirements of the CHP chassis, and provides isolation, combining, and the control, status, and power distribution cabling. The original Claypower modules and the new Zippy replacement power supplies are functionally equivalent. There are, however, certain minor differences between them:- The Claypower and Zippy power supply modules are not interchangeable between the two housings. The replacement Zippy PSU provides 400W as opposed to the Claypower s 300W. (300W is sufficient for any CHP chassis configuration.) 205 Imagine Communications Corp. Proprietary and Confidential 0-February-205 Page 23 of 26

24 Computer Setup The internal CHP chassis cabling connects to the frame of the original Claypower unit, whilst the new Zippy has an umbilical cable running from inside the frame to the CHP connection points. The redundant power supply modules are secured into the frame with a latch on the original Claypower PSUs; the Zippy units are retained in the frame with a single screw. The AC power cord input connector is located on the bottom of the original Claypower PSU module whilst the Zippy IEC sockets are at the top. The instructions contained in this document are mainly for the 4U CHP, but all electrical connections are the same for both units. The 2U differs slightly with regard to mechanical mounting points but is easier to upgrade due to it being more open in construction. Original Claypower PSU Replacement Zippy PSU About Zippy PSU Retrofit For information on retrofitting Zippy PSUs into the CHP Device Controller chassis reference the Zippy_PSU_Installation_Guide_for_2U_and_4U_CHP_g.pdf. 205 Imagine Communications Corp.
