Upgrading a 2U CHP to an i7 Quad Core SBC 1. Parts required: i7 SBC Slim line SATA DVD drive Combined SATA data and power cable for slim-line optical drive Serial port ribbon cable - 9way D male to 10 way IDC ribbon cable Tie wraps 2. Remove all external connections to the CHP and place unit on a work surface with the appropriate anti-static precautions in place. 3. Undo the screws holding the top cover in place 3 to the front, 1 either side and 1 to the rear. 4. Remove any peripheral PCI cards from their sockets. 5. Remove all wires going to the SBC. These are as follows:- CPU power connector 4 pin Molex Parallel port IDC cable 26 way IDC Serial port IDC cable 10 way IDC Disk drive SATA cable DVD drive cable. ( This is either a SATA or IDE***) Keyboard and mouse cables 5 pin white plastic housings USB cables 5 pin black plastic housings Front panel connections Speaker 4 pin black housing with 2 wires Reset - 2 pin black housing with black and red wires Power - 2 pin black housing with blue and white wires ***Note: if the DVD unit fitted to the 2U CHP is an IDE device, then this will need to be replaced with a SATA unit which is supplied with the kit 6. Remove the power supply cable connecting to the backplane. Make a note of how it connects since it can be a 20 pin socket on the cable going into the 24 way plug on the backplane. (the 4 empty connections will be towards the front of the unit.) 7. The Single Board Computer and PCI peripheral cards sit in an inner frame that need to be removed to gain access to the cards. Remove the 4 screws holding the carriage to the rear Page 1
panel, and the 2 at the front securing it to the base. 8. Slide the carriage ~25mm towards the front of the unit whilst at the same time raising the front of the carriage up slightly to clear the mounting points on the base and remove it completely from the chassis. 9. With all wires disconnected remove the clamping screw on the SBC rear bracket and lift out the old card. To do this it may be necessary to use a small screwdriver as leverage against the carrier at the front of the unit while holding the rear of the card between thumb and finger and lifting. Do not try to lift the card by holding the heat sink/fan, memory or the smaller heat sink to the right of the processor otherwise damage could occur. 10. Undo the 4 screws holding the HD/DVD drive bay to the base plate 11. Disconnect the power and IDE cables from the rear of the hard drive unit. The IDE cable is no longer required and can be discarded. 12. Remove the drive bay by lifting the rear of the unit and sliding it back and upwards 13. Undo the 4 screws (2 either side) holding the optical drive and LED board to the drive mounting bracket 14. Remove the 3 small pozi-drive screws holding the IDE optical drive to the LED mounting bracket. 15. Fit the new SATA optical drive to the LED mounting bracket 16. Insert the combined SATA data and power cable into the optical drive. 17. Position the drive bay into the chassis, lowering front first into the cut-out in the panel and then tighten the 4 fixing screws. 18. At this point you may wish to tidy up the cables in the unit. Note that in some early units there is one power cable that is not used and it can be removed from the lower left connector on the dual power housing and discarded. 19. Carefully place the new i7 SBC card into the end slot on the backplane and press down firmly to ensure it is seated correctly in the sockets. Page 2
Note that the return on the rear connector bracket will be sitting directly over the chassis as shown in the picture to the right......and the cut-outs around the edge connectors on the SBC will be almost in contact with the mating connectors on the backplane. All cut-outs should have a similar gap to indicate that the card is seated correctly. Refit the screw holding the SBC in position. 20. Lower the carriage into the chassis rear-first and slide into position, ensuring that no cables are trapped under it. If there are any PCI cards to re-install, do not re-fit the 6 mounting screws at this point; leave the carriage lose in position in the chassis unitl the cables have been connected to the SBC. If there are no additional PCI cards then re-fit the 6 mounting screws 4 to the rear panel and 2 to the base at the front. 21. Reconnect the cables starting with those in the lowest positions, ensuring that they will not interfere with the PCI cards once they are re-installed. Keyboard and Mouse cable the one marked K goes to the rear of the unit Page 3
USB cables. It will not matter in which order these are connected, but note there are 3x 10 way headers with 1 pin removed on each. Connect each of the 3x USB cables to the lower 5 pins of each header, with the red wire to the right (rear) and the sleeved black wire to the left (front). Speaker cable the 4 pin housing connects to the lower 4 pins of the 14 way header. Orientation of the header is not essential. Power switch cable connect to the 5 th pair in from the right, and reset cable - connect to the 6 th pair in from the right. Header orientation does not matter COM port and Parallel cable Page 4
SATA cables connect the HD cable to the upper blue SATA socket and the DVD to the adjacent black SATA socket 22. Re-insert any PCI cards in their relevant slots 23. Connect keyboard, monitor and power and check that the unit boots correctly Page 5
