6 Introduction 2.0 Introduction 2.1 Scope The Weather Station DisplayTM manual provides instructions and information regarding the software application only. 7 Overview 3.0 Overview 3.1 Design Intent Dyacon Weather Station DisplayTM software is an easy-to-use weather instrument console program. The graphic design is patterned after glass cockpit aviation instruments, the display is high-contrast with bold text. Any user that is familiar with conventions typically used for a graphic interface should be able to install and configure the weather station with little or no support. (Hopefully, no one needs to read this manual.) Page 7/16

8 Installation 4.0 Installation Weather Display software installation follows the standard Windows installer conventions. Run the installer executable. DyaconWeatherStationDisplaySetup.exe Select the installation directory and select Next. Chose to create a desktop shortcut, if desired and select Next. Page 8/16

10 Equipment Connection 5.0 Equipment Connection 5.1 Power Depending on the weather station configuration, such as MS-120, the weather station may have to be powered through the cable connection. Other weather station configurations, including MS-130, -140, and -150 are solar powered and only require a data connection to the computer running Weather Station Display. 5.2 Data Connection Weather Station DisplayTM connects to Dyacon CM-1 weather station controllers through the Modbus RTU slave port on the controller. Note: Modbus RTU is an industrial protocol capable of very long cable runs and compatible with off-the-shelf industrial converters, adapters, and other data devices. In order to connect a the weather station to a personal computer, the signal must be converted from RS-485 to USB. This converter is available for Dyacon or may be purchased from another source. 11 Equipment Connection Data Cable The cable selected to connect the weather station to the computer (and converter) will be determined by the distance. For short distances of a few meters, just about any wire will work. Longer distances will require low-capacitance instrument or data cable. CAT-5 has been found to be a low-cost option for long cable runs, simply use one pair of wires for the data connection. Where station power is required, simply use another pair of wires from the same cable to supply 12 VDC to 24 VDC. The weather station draws less than 35 ma at 12 V and will operate down to 7 VDC. Consequently, the voltage drop in the cable is typically insignificant. Page 11/16

12 Software Operation 6.0 Software Operation 6.1 Console Screen and Features Image 6.1: Console Screen, Light Theme A title is shown for each measured parameter. The needle color for the analog dials corresponds to the measurement text. Pressure Trend The pressure trend indicator will show rising, falling, and steady. Gust Indicator The small triangle on the wind speed and wind direction dials will show the maximum gust detected in the last 10 minutes. When not gust is detected, the wind speed gust indicator will be position over zero (0) and the direction gust indicator will not be shown. Connection Activity A measurement request is made at just over once per second. If the Dyacon converter is used, the red and green lights will flash for each request and response. The console indicator will also similarly blink. Page 12/16

13 Software Operation In the case of a connection failure, a No Data Connection message will appear on the console screen to that operators do not erroneously read invalid data. Connection The USB-to-Modbus converter connects to the computer USB port as a communication port device. Page 13/16

14 Software Operation When the converter is installed, a ccom port number will automatically be assigned. Depending on the computer configuration, there may be multiple com ports which can be selected. Unless the user is familiar with which com ports are in use, it may take some experimentation to find the correct port. Alternatively, the Windows Device Manager can be used to find the com port, which was assigned. This can be found under the Ports (COM & LPT) heading. The COM port used for the Dyacon converter will appear as USB Serial Port (COMx). In the case of the example shown in the image, the port used is COM4. Image 6.4: Device Manager Page 14/16
