4 PROTÉGÉ SYSTEM Introduction The Protégé System is a powerful integrated alarm and access control management system designed to provide integration with building automation, apartment complex control and HVAC in one flexible package. Communicating through a proprietary high speed protocol across an encrypted RS-485 network using modular-based hardware design, system installers have the flexibility to accommodate any installation from small or large, residential or commercial. The Nano Prox Proximity Reader is an advanced technology radio frequency identification device (RFID) specifically designed to enhance the functionality of security, building automation and access control by providing multiple format compatibility, high speed data transmission, built in stand alone operation and sabotage protection. Application Note Information The following application note describes the ability to operate a Nano Prox Proximity Card Reader using only 4 wires but still have the ability to indicate an access granted by visual and audible output. Wiegand card readers typically require a connection of 6 conductors as a minimum however there are many times when an additional card reader is required where only a 4 core cable is available. A good example is when retrofitting an existing elevator control solution many shaft cables only have a 4 core cable available. This application note explains a method for connecting the Nano Prox Proximity Card Reader and any of the Protégé System Reader Expansion Modules using a 4 core cable while still retaining the Beeper and LED Indication. The method of connection in this application note prevents the reader form sending data if the LED or BEEPER control lines are driven by other functions. If possible an 8 core cable should be run according to the wiring specifications of the Card Reading Device in new installations. 5 PROGRAMMING Overview A limited amount of programming is required. The Nano Prox Proximity Card Reader should be configured for single LED control mode with the Red LED being active all the time and the Green LED activating on a signal from the Red LED connection. Refer to the Nano Prox Proximity Reader Programming Manual for more information. This application note has only been tested with the Nano Prox Proximity Card Reader and may not operate with other card reader technology or access control systems. Connection The following application note explains a connection method that exploits the Open Collector (an output that drives to a ground or 0v and when not activated floats at a nominal pull up or reference voltage) nature of the Nano Prox Proximity Card Reader and Protégé Reader Expanders Output Operation. To wire the Proximity Reader connect L1 and BZ outputs to the D0 and D1 inputs on the Reader Expander (Refer Figure 1). Connect the 4 core conductor to the R1+, R1-, D0 and D1 terminals on the Reader Expander. At the Nano Prox Proximity Reader connect the D0 to the BROWN (Red LED) and the D1 to the BLUE (Beeper) (Refer Figure 1).
