4 1. Introduction The Evolion Toolbox software communicates with Saft Evolion module(s) through a personal computer (PC) USB port. It works while connected to one Evolion module or up to 30 Evolion modules at one time. Monitors current status in real-time Allows basic user parameter setup Provides alarm status for troubleshooting Allows detail status report generating (html file format) Conducts automated installation and commissioning (I&C) Conducts automated firmware (BMST software) updating The Evolion Toolbox software is available from the USB memory stick (p/n ) included as part of the Saft communication kit (p/n ) or it can be downloaded from Contact your local Saft representative for more information. 2. Computer requirements Operating system MS Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 Processor Pentium IV or higher RAM memory 256 MB Hard disc space 40 MB USB 1 port RS485/USB converter cable assembly FTDI (p/n ) 3. Software installation If you are using the USB memory stick (p/n ) or downloaded the files from there are two options for installation and use. Option 1: In case you already have the FTDI cable drivers installed and operating on your system, this option can be used. Use directly, the executable file EvolionToolbox.exe available from the root directory of the USB memory stick. In this case no administrator rights for your computer are necessary. Just copy, paste and use. 4

5 Option 2: In all cases, this option can be used. Run the automated installer file Evolion_1.00_B_Setup.exe. In this case, you will have the option to install 3 items; the Evolion Toolbox software, the FTDI converter drivers and the user manuals of the Evolion. Administrator rights for your computer will be necessary. To install the drivers for the FTDI, plug the FTDI converter cable (p/n ) to the USB port. Windows may automatically identify and install the drivers (via internet). Optionally, you can manually install drivers available from the USB memory stick using the device manager menus. Your computer is now ready to begin an Evolion Toolbox session. 5

Connecting 4.1 Single Connect Figure 1 Figure 1 Description 1 Plug the FTDI converter cable (p/n ) to either RJ45 available on the Evolion. 2 Plug the FTDI converter cable (p/n ) to the computer USB. 3 Plug the RJ45 resistor cap (p/n ) provided with Evolion accessory kit. 4 Disconnect power if necessary. It is required to disconnect from power and other parallel connected Evolion(s) anytime a BMST reset is to be commanded. A BMST reset will be commanded anytime you, Click the Reset Battery! Conduct an Installation and commissioning Conduct a Parameter setup Conduct a Firmware update 5 Turn module ON by pressing button at least 2 seconds. You are now ready to start an Evolion Toolbox session. 6

7 4.2 Bus connect (3 Evolion module example) Figure 2 Figure 2 Description 1 Plug the FTDI converter cable (p/n ) to either RJ45 available on the Evolion. 2 Plug the FTDI converter cable (p/n ) to the computer USB. 3 Plug the RJ45 resistor cap (p/n ) provided with Evolion accessory kit. 4 Interconnect the each RJ45 using the communication cable (p/n ) provided with Evolion accessory kit. 5 Disconnect power as necessary.! If a BMST reset will be commanded, it is necessary to disconnect power. If a BMST reset is commanded with power connected, it may damage the Evolion module. A BMST reset is commanded anytime you, Click the Reset or Restart Battery or Switch to Bootloader button Conduct an Installation and commissioning Conduct a Parameter setup Conduct a Firmware update 6 Turn module(s) ON by pressing button at least 2 seconds. You are now ready to start an Evolion Toolbox session. 7

8 5. Getting started To start a session of Evolion Toolbox, first make sure you have installed the software and single connect or bus connect. After, double click the desktop icon. Action Comments The port should automatically be identified and begin communication. If necessary, click the drop down menu in order to setup the COM port manually. The speed will automatically set when you Scan Bus. Optionally, you can setup the communication speed manually from the drop down menu. - Evolion not ON or connected - communication OK - no communication port identified The Node automatically sets when you Scan Bus. Optionally, you can setup the Node ID manually by incrementing the - or + buttons. Optionally, you can press F2 for single connect and F3 for bus connect. Live monitoring begins with updates to the variable fields every 1 second. Once you have connected, you are able to access 3 tab areas. Overview tab Report tab Parameters & Software Upload tab 8

9 6. Overview tab Figure 4a Figure 4a 1 2 Description Communication setup area The settings for communication port, communication speed and Node ID. This header is displayed in all active windows. Software configuration area The settings for access mode, bus scan, default settings, about and exit. This header menu area is displayed in all active windows. 3 Main tabs Overview, Report or Parameters & Software Upload Monitoring area The display for the variable fields of the Active Evolion module (Active Node ID). See Appendix for variable field definitions. This area is only displayed with the Overview tab. Overview sub-tabs The display area for the Active Evolion module (Active Node ID) for Details, Power Layout, Setup and Bus Monitoring I&C (for all bus connected Evolions). See procedures in chapter Installation and commissioning, Monitoring and troubleshooting and Setting parameters for one Evolion module for more details. The Active Evolion module (Active Node ID) is displayed Node ID #, serial number and part number. This footer is displayed in all active windows. 9

Report tab Figure 5 Figure 5 Description 1 Generates a report for the single connected Evolion and displays it in the report display field. 2 Saves the current report in the report display field in html format. 3 Generates a report for the all the bus connected Evolions in the report display field. Saves the black box for only a single connected Evolion. It switches the single connected Evolion to Bootloader mode and 4 allows the user to save the blackbox data in an encrypted file (.s19). 5 Switches the single connected Evolion back to normal Application mode after saving the encrypted blackbox file. 6 The report output field. The current connected Evolion report or the automated reports are displayed here. 10

Parameters & Software Upload tab Figure 6 Figure 6 Description 1 Select the.pkg file used for the upgrade and define a site name for information and reporting. 2 Execute a scan and check of a single Evolion or bus connected Evolions. The display area of the scanned Evolion(s) and the needed actions to complete the upgrade with the selected.pkg file. 3 Optionally, you can un-select a connected Evolion if you want to bypass the upgrade process. 4 Start the upgrade process on the connected and selected Evolions. The upgrade takes about 1 minute for each module. 5 Starts the verification process and completes an automated upgrade report (see Report tab). 6 For expert access. Consult with your local Saft representative for further details. 9. Setting the defaults Action Comments Choose the defaults for communication settings, general settings and Installation and Commissioning (I&C) settings. 11

12 10. Installation and commissioning This procedure applies the installation and commissioning (I&C) procedure of the Evolion modules. This procedure should be completed before installing the Evolion modules at the application site. For all bus connected Evolion modules, it will do the following in one automated procedure. assigns the Node ID, sets the communication speed, sets the installation date and sets the IMR factor. Action Comments! Disconnect all power cables to avoid possible damage to the module. Turn ON all Evolions connected via communication bus by pressing the ON/OFF button for 2 seconds. Allow the automated process to continue and follow all the prompts until complete.! Check to make sure that the Power flag is OK. If the Power flag is NOT OK, the modules have greater than 2V difference. Another I&C should be conducted with modules with less than 2V difference before connecting modules in the application. 12

13 11. Monitoring and troubleshooting For monitoring and troubleshooting alarms, use the following procedure. Action Comments Power connections are OK for this procedure. The Evolions should be ON and operating. See Appendix for the variable field definitions. Only the Active Evolion is displayed. See Appendix for the variable field definitions. When bus connected, the main variables of all the Evolion modules are displayed. The Active Node ID can be chosen by double clicking in the Select column. 13

14 12. Generating a report To create and save a detailed status report of one Evolion module or several bus connected modules, use the following procedure. Action Comments Power connections are OK for this procedure. The Evolions should be ON and operating. For single connect use Download, for bus connect use Download Bus Report. The report displays in the report output field. or Saves the report in the report output field. The file is html format. 14

15 13. Setting parameters for one Evolion module To change I&C setup parameters on the Active Evolion module, use the following procedure. Action Comments! Disconnect all power cables to avoid possible damage to the module. The current parameter is shown on the left. Change any of the parameters on the right by entering the new value. Writes the new parameters to the Active Evolion firmware. Only the Active Evolion is updated. A BMST reset will be automatically sent to the Evolion. 15

16 14. Firmware updating To upgrade the Evolion s BMST software (firmware) or its parameter set, use the following procedure. Action Comments! Disconnect all power cables to avoid possible damage to the module. Turn ON all Evolions connected via communication bus by pressing the ON/OFF button for 2 seconds. Browse to open the pkg file. The update file is provided by Saft. Enter a Site Name for information purposes. or If bus connected, click Scan & Check the entire bus OR click check only the current battery for the Active Evolion. Optionally, tick the Select? column to indicate which Node ID s will continue with the upgrade (update) process. The upgrade (update) process now begins. Follow any prompts until complete. A BMST reset is automatically sent to each Evolion after update is complete. 16

17 Turn ON the Evolion(s). A report is automatically generated and you will automatically be prompted to save the report om html format. Generates a report. The report displays in the report output field where it can eventually be saved in html format. 15. Reading the blackbox To read and save the Evolion blackbox file, use the following procedure. This procedure can only be conducted with a single connected Evolion (not a bus connected Evolions). The saved blackbox file is an.s19 file and must be un-encrypted by an authorized Saft representative. Action Comments! Disconnect all power cables to avoid possible damage to the module. This procedure can only be conducted with a single connect (not bus connect). After the blackbox is read, you will be prompted to save the.s19 file. This file is encrypted; contact your local Saft representative for further information. 17

18 Appendix: Variable field definitions The variable names are in alphabetical order. The Evolion Toolbox software updates the variables every 1 second. Variable Ah: Battery Alarms Battery Mode Charge Mode Description The available discharge capacity in Amp-hrs (Ah) is indicated for only the Active module. Any major or minor alarms are indicated for only the Active module. Indicates the operating mode; nominal, safe, sleep or forbidden charge for only the Active module. Indicates the charge mode; floating, fast or regulated charge for only the Active module. Delta SOC The corresponding %SOC difference for Delta V. Delta V The difference between the V Min and V Max. Note: The cell balancing feature is active anytime the Delta V is more than 30 mv. See the Evolion Technical Manual for more details. Indicates the Emergency Alarm status for only the Active module. If an Emergency Alarm is Emergency Alarm active, the Evolion will be in safe mode (no charge or discharge). This alarm indicates that a redundant safety limits was exceeded. See Evolion Technical Manual for more details. Estimated Remaining Time Indicates the remaining discharge time based on the measured discharge current and indicated Ah for only the Active module. Heater Cmd Indicates the operating status of the internal heater for only the Active module. 1 = ON, 0 = OFF I Batt: The measured module current for only the Active module. Charge is positive and discharge is negative current. IMD (A) Indicate the maximum allowed discharge current (Id max) in Amps for only the Active module. See Evolion Technical Manual for more details. IMR (A) Indicates the maximum allowed charge current (Ic max) in Amps for only the Active module. See Evolion Technical Manual for more details. Indicates the major alarm status for only the Active module. If a major alarm is active, the Major Alarm Evolion module will be in safe mode (no charge or discharge) or forbidden charge mode (no charge) depending on the alarm. This alarm indicates that a primary safety limit was exceeded. See Evolion Technical Manual for more details. Indicates the minor alarm status for only the Active module. If a minor alarm is active, the Minor Alarm Evolion module operates normally. This alarm indicates that a primary safety feature may activate a major alarm if operation is not corrected. See Evolion Technical Manual for more details. SOH (%) Indicates the Evolion module s State of Health (SOH) for only the Active module. State Of Charge (%) The % state of charge is indicated relative to the rated capacity at C/8 A and 25 C for only the Active module. T Max The maximum temperature measured inside the module (not including mosfets) for only the Active module. T Max: The maximum measured internal module temperature is indicated for only the Active module. T Min The minimum temperature measured inside the module (not including mosfets) for only the Active module. T C FastCharge ( C) Charge mosfet temperature for only the Active module. T C FastCharge ( C) Discharge mosfet temperature for only the Active module. T C Slow Charge ( C) Charge regulated mode mosfet temperature for only the Active module. V Batt: The measured module voltage for only the Active module. V Max The maximum cell voltage for only the Active module. V Min The minimum cell voltage for only the Active module. VMD The minimum voltage that opens the low voltage disconnect safety feature for only the Active module. VMR The maximum voltage for re-charge to 100% SOC for only the Active module. 18
