This guideline describes of SYS 600C. The guideline is applicable for SYS 600C versions 1.xx and 2.xx 1. Introduction This document describes the procedure to make LAN Teaming of network adaptors in SYS 600C product. Basically it s one of the ways to achieve the redundancy against network faults is the teaming of network adapters. Intel LAN teaming feature offers many various modes AFT, SFT, ALB, RLB, SLA, IEEE 802.3ad DLA however SYS 600C supports AFT & SFT for communication networks in substation automation solutions. 2. Teaming Modes in SYS 600C: 2.1 Adapter Fault Tolerance Adapter fault tolerance protects against failure in cable, switch port connected to adapter, and adapter fault. Adapter fault tolerance provides more than one backup standby link, it supports up to 8 adapters in the teaming link. If active link failure backup standby link take overs it. In case of a failure of active link, primary adapter will transfer MAC address and layer-3 address (IP Address) to failover secondary adapter (standby link). AFT preferred to be used in the small substation application with few numbers of IEDs connected. AFT Requirements: All adapters should be connected to the same hub or switch. Disable STP (Spanning Tree Protocol) in the switch connected to teamed adapters. All teamed adapters must be in the same subnet. Example of configuration: Figure 2.1 AFT Network Configuration for the small substation application. Page 1 of 5
2.2 Switch Fault Tolerance The Switch Fault Tolerance feature of the Intel network adapter provides the redundancy across the separate switches. It supports maximum two adaptors in the team. In this configuration, one port will remain active and other in the standby mode. When Active port loses the link, secondary port backup standby link gets activated. SFT is preferred to be used in the medium/large substation application. SFT Requirements: Both adapters should be connected to the separate switches. Here one switch is redundant so when active port fails all traffic is forwarded via redundant switch. STP (Spanning Tree Protocol) should be enabled in the all switches connected in the network to ensure the loops are avoided however switch ports connected to adaptor should be configured as Edge Port or Fast Port. Don t put clients on the link partner switches because they won t pass traffic to partner switch at failure. All teamed adapters must be in the same subnet. Example of Configuration: Figure 2.2 SFT Network Configuration for the medium/large substation application. Note: You may expand the network and connect more number of SYS 600C to link partner switches similar to figure 2.2. Page 2 of 5
3. Configuring Adapter Drivers for Teaming feature to SYS 600C Follow the steps to configure Intel Teaming Feature: 1) Intel LAN Drivers must be installed in the system 2) Open Control Panel 3) Select Device Manager. 4) Expand Network adapters and double click on Intel(R) PRO/1000 PT (PF) Dual Port Server Adaptor. 5) The Properties windows appear. Select the Teaming tab. 6) Select Team this adapter with other adapters and click New Team. 7) New Team wizard dialog box appears. Specify a name for the team and for example Team #1 click Next. Figure 3.1 Naming of the team virtual adaptor. Page 3 of 5
8) Select both Intel(R) PRO/1000 PT Dual Port Server Adapters. Click Next. Figure 3.2 Selection of the team member adapters. 9) Select Switch Fault Tolerance / Adaptor Fault Tolerance depending on the requirement to a team mode and click Next. Figure 3.3 Selection of the teaming mode. 10) ClickOK to finish driver configuration. Page 4 of 5
11) Click OK to close the Properties dialogs. 12) The Team is now configured. Figure 3.4 Team #1 Virtual Adapter has been created. 13) Virtual adaptor named TEAM: Team #1 appears in the adaptor list. For further information about Intel Teaming features; refer documentation on Intel website. Note: LAN Teaming procedure for SYS 600C can be used as a reference for other computers must be having an installation with one of following Intel Network Adaptors: Intel PRO/100, PRO/1000, PRO/10GbE Server Adapters or Intel Gigabit CT Desktop Adapter.
