3 Overview The ASC301 and ASC321 Multifunction Process Calibrators have an electronic calibration. It is adjusted case closed with no mechanical adjustments. The calibration is done via a serial communications port by sending commands and receiving readings. The RS-232 interface is used for the calibration of the ASC301 and ASC321. There is no front panel calibration, due to the complexity of the unit. The calibration can be done by using a terminal program or an automated calibration program can be written using programs like Visual Basic or Labview. In this manual only the serial terminal mode will be described. Initiating Communication The terminal communications can be setup using terminal communication software on a PC, such as Hyperterminal or PcPlus. Connect the RS-232 cable to stereo jack on the side of the ASC301 or ASC321. The other end of the cable should be connected to the terminal/pc serial port. An adapter may be needed for terminals that use 25 pin D serial connectors. The terminal settings need to be set as follows: Bits per second: 9600 Data bits: 8 Parity: None Stop bits: 1 Flow control: none Local echo: on As long as the calibrator has been within at a stable temperature within the range of 18 C to 28 C for an hour or more, the calibrator only needs 5 minutes to warm up. If temperature conditions were previously below 10 C or higher then 40 C, then the unit must be allowed to stabilize for a minimum of 3 hours prior to calibration. To initiate the calibration mode use the terminal to send the CAL_START command. The following will be displayed on the terminal. Calibration is password protected Enter Password: The password is 900. Enter the password correctly and the following will be displayed on the terminal. 1

4 Calibration Menu Calibrating the ASC301 or ASC321 You should recalibrate the ASC301 or ASC321 at the required calibration interval (defined by the factory as 1 year). Manual Calibration of the ASC301 or ASC321 is a menu driven process. It consists of 13 different menu selections for calibration of the different functions. Certain dependencies exist in that certain functions must be calibrated before others can be calibrated. Dependencies are listed in the table below. An X in a row indicates that the step in that column must be completed before the step in that row can be completed. These dependencies are related to calibration only. They are NOT intended to show the relationship between normal functionality and calibration. 2

5 Table 1 Calibration Dependencies N/A 2 N/A 3 N/A 4 N/A 5 N/A 6 N/A 7 N/A 8 N/A 9 N/A 10 N/A 11 N/A 12 X N/A Once a particular calibration menu selection has been made the user is prompted to either input a signal into the ASC301 or ASC321 or enter the output value of a signal from the ASC301 or ASC321. When inputting signals into the ASC301 or ASC321, the readings are taken after the {enter} key is pressed and before the next prompt. Make sure the input to the ASC301 or ASC321 is stable before the {enter} key is pressed and remains stable until the next prompt appears. When entering the outputted value of a signal, make sure that value is stable before you enter it; there is no backspace. 3

6 Test Equipment The test equipment listed in the table below is recommended for calibration of the ASC301 or ASC321. If the equipment listed in the table is not available, equipment with the same or better specifications can be substituted. 7 Procedure 1. Procedure: After you have made your connections, type 1 {enter}. Use the 5520 to input 0 ma and then 24 ma. The screen should look as shown below. Connect the low side of Ohms Source to the low side of the ohms measure sense jacks on the DMM. Connect the high side of Ohms Source to the high side of the ohms measure current source jacks on the DMM. Connect the low side of Ohms Source to the low side of the ohms measure current source jacks on the DMM. It is important that the sense leads be on the bottom of the stack on the ASC301 or ASC321 ohms source jacks. Procedure: After you have made your connections, type 7 {enter}. Use the 3458 to measure the two calibration points (See below). The 3458 should be locked in the 1K ohm range (1.0 ma excitation). Enter each of the two calibration points as prompted. After entering the second calibration point the main calibration menu will reappear. 11

Connect the low side of Ohms Source to the low side of the ohms measure sense jacks on the DMM. Connect the high side of Ohms Source to the high side of the ohms measure current source jacks on the DMM. Connect the low side of Ohms Source to the low side of the ohms measure current source jacks on the DMM. It is important that the sense leads be on the bottom of the stack on the ASC301 or ASC321 ohms source jacks. Procedure: After you have made your connections, type 8 {enter}. Use the 3458 to measure the two calibration points (See below). The 3458 should be locked in the 10K Ohm range (0.1 ma excitation). Enter each of the two calibration points as prompted. After entering the second calibration point the main calibration menu will reappear. 13

Connect the + AUX jack of the 5520 to the + voltage jack of the Calibrator. Connect the - AUX jack of the 5520 to the - voltage jack of the Calibrator. Connect the + V jack of the 5520 to the 4W ( current) jack of the Calibrator. Connect the - V jack of the 5520 to the 3W (+ current) jack of the Calibrator. Procedure: After you have made your connections, type 9 {enter}. Use the 5520 to input 15 ohms, 400 ohms, and finally 4000 ohms. As in previous sections, the enter key must be applied prior to advancing between steps. The screen should look as shown below. After inputting 4000 ohms, the main calibration menu will reappear. 15

Procedure: After you have made your connections, type 11 {enter}. Use the 5520 to input 10mV and then 75mV. The screen should look as shown below. Calibrating Thermocouple CJC: Test Equipment: Table 14 List of Test Equipment For Calibrating Thermocouple CJC Quantity Manufacturer Model Equipment 1 Fluke 5520A Calibrator 1 Omega J Thermocouple Special Limits of error wire with J mini plugs on both ends Connections: Use the J Thermocouple Extension Wire to attach the TC receptacle on the ASC301 or ASC321 to the TC receptacle of the Procedure: The calibration of the TC CJC (Cold junction compensation) is a critical part of the calibration process, it is important that the thermocouple junction be allowed to completely stabilize. Usually this takes a minimum of five minutes. After you have made your connections, type 12 {enter}. Use the 5520 to source 0 degrees Celsius (J Thermocouple) into the ASC301 or ASC321. After pressing {enter} the main calibration menu will reappear. The temperature scale used is ITS-90. Calibration Menu Input a 0.0 Cel Type J Theromcouple. Press enter when stable. 19

22 Notes On Calibration Verification: This procedure does not cover the verification of the unit. As a rule of thumb the unit should never use up more than 50% of its specifications immediately after calibration. Also the person calibrating the ASC301 or ASC321 can exit and enter calibration mode at will, while doing the verification as they go (subject to the dependencies in Table 1). 20
