1 Job Sheet 5 Motor Drives The motor drive in your training system is also called a motion controller. It controls the speed and position of the 3-phase AC synchronous servomotor that physically rotates the blade in order to adjust its pitch angle. Figure 5-1. Motion Controller. Shown in Figure 5-1, the motion controller has an output frequency that ranges from 0Hz to 650Hz with pulses at about 4 khz. This high-frequency power keeps the 100W AC motor running quietly, and permits highly accurate speed adjustment and regulation in addition to rotary positioning. An on-board microprocessor controls the frequency, amplitude, and waveform of the pulse-width modulated (PWM) output signal that connects directly to the electric servomotor. Rapidly switched semiconductor devices, called insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs), provide the high driving current that is required at the controller output. The green cable (shown in Figure 5-1) is the encoder system interface cable, which carries the resolver output signals and motor temperature signal (from a thermistor inside the motor) to the sensor module. The sensor module digitally conditions the signals for the control unit, which is connected to the sensor module via a drive cable, called the DRIVE-CLiQ interface. The violet cable at the top of the control unit is the PROFIBUS cable from the PLC. The DRIVE-CLiQ interface is located to the right of the PROFIBUS connector. Festo Didactic Inc

As shown in Figure 5-2, the motion controller assembly, or motor drive consists of the sensor module, the control unit, and a power module (behind the control unit). The power module contains a power supply and motor drive circuitry. The orange cable at the bottom of the power module is the output, which provides the driving power to the servomotor. The control unit contains the basic operator panel and the electronics required to control the motor drive circuitry in the power module. Non-volatile Flash memory is added externally to the control unit and a liquid-crystal display on the front of the basic operator panel allow the end user to make changes to several motor control settings. The motor drive provides 125W to a three-phase AC motor at Vac maximum from a single-phase AC power source at Vac. Figure 5-3. AC Motor Drive Block Diagram. As shown in Figure 5-3, other components support the operation of the motor drive, including a 34 Festo Didactic Inc

3 Controller Operation The motor drive does not have a main power switch. The drive is powered whenever the electrical system is energized. On the motor drive, various parameters (numbered P00001 and higher) can be set and status values (numbered r00000 and higher) can be read. The numerous parameters should be properly set (saved to memory) already, so you will simply view some of the values during this job. Faults (F00000) and alarms (A00000) may also be displayed. 4 OBJECTIVES In this job, you will operate the pitch motor to verify proper operation of your training system. You will also check the settings of the motor drive on your training system. EQUIPMENT REQUIRED Refer to the Equipment Utilization Chart in Appendix A to obtain the list of equipment required for this job. SAFETY PROCEDURES Before proceeding with this job, complete the following checklist. You are wearing safety glasses. You are wearing safety shoes. You are not wearing anything that might get caught such as a tie, jewelry, or loose clothes. If your hair is long, tie it out of the way. The working area is clean and free of oil. Your sleeves are rolled up. Instructor initials: PROCEDURE Setup Perform the Basic Setup procedure described in Appendix D. Use a key to open the electrical box to view the panel inside. Begin Perform the Energizing procedure described in Appendix D. Apply power to the training system by turning on the Main power switch. Enable the motor drive by turning on the Emergency Stop switch (in green position) and pressing the green Start button. Festo Didactic Inc

5 NOTE: Ensure the Emergency Stop switch is on (pulled outward). On the HMI, press the Start Trainer button on the Main screen. Pitch Motor Drive Check the display on the motor drive to ensure that the motor drive is ready to use. You should see a lit display with a two-digit numeric value in the upper left corner (for drive object number 01). On the motor drive, you will press the Parameter (P) and/or Function (Fn) buttons with the Up/Down arrow buttons to display and/or change settings. Perform the following steps to change P00003 from the default value of 1 (for Standard menu access) to a value of 3 (for Expert menu access). Press the P button and scroll to P00003 by using the Up arrow button. Press the P button to see the default value of 1 (for Standard menu access). Press the Fn button to permit a value change. Press the Up arrow button twice to change the value to 3 (for Expert menu access). Press the P button to set the new value. NOTE: The S indicates that the present value should be saved/stored to memory. Hold the P button to save/store the new value to memory. Press the P button to return to the parameter list. Press both the Fn button and the Up arrow button (simultaneously) on the pitch motor drive until the drive object number 01 (for control unit 38 Festo Didactic Inc

6 Press the Up arrow button once so that the drive object number 02 (for motor drive parameters) is displayed. Press the P button to save the drive object number setting. Continue to use the Up/Down arrow buttons for scrolling, and the P button to select and view values. DC link input voltage (Vi) in Vdc. Press the P button once to view the value, and again to return to the parameter list. Record the displayed values in Table 5-1. Press the buttons once more to show r00025, the RMS output voltage (Vo) in Vac. Press the buttons once again to view r00021, the motor speed or velocity (Vm) in rpm. Press the buttons again to view r00035, the motor temperature (Tm) in C. On the HMI, press the upper Manual button to start using the manual operating mode. 7 On the Manual screen, press and hold a Jog button to run the motor while displaying each value again on the motor drive. Record the displayed values in Table 5-2. Press the Down arrow button twice to change the value to 1 (for Standard menu access). Press the P button to set the new value. 8 Hold the P button to save/store the new value to memory. Exit the HMI operating system by pressing the Exit (X) button. Wait for the system to close. NOTE: You may have to reset alarms before exiting the software. Use the Main power switch to turn off all system power. Perform the Lockout/Tagout procedure described in Appendix D.
