1 EcuTester Created with the aim of electronics engineer! EcuTester is a device designed and produced by MTechnics. MTechnics Piotr Sygut Poraj ul.leśna 79 NIP MTechnics is specialized in designing and repairing construction machines electronics and creates many designs of electronics and automation systems on other companies request. EcuTester arose from a need of speeding up diagnostics when measuring electronics without power source. The devices base of operation is getting the current-voltage characteristics of measured circuit and comparing this characteristic to template one saved in computer memory. In channel comparison option you can compare two devices. This measurement is based on checking if the difference between devices is within specified tolerance. When comparing with template saved in *.esa file, this file must be created earlier from working electronics. To do that, you need to do photo of the circuit and load it to EcuTester's software and select the measured point on photo. Next you need to touch the measuring electrode to the point, EcuTester will draw the characteristics of this point. In the next step you need to click SAVE to save this characteristics. EcuTester s software saves current position from photo within the characteristics of the measured point. This needs to be repeated for any amount of points in the circuit. The more points and circuits we scan, the more precise will be our future circuit checking. Good way is to make measurements on integrated circuits, which belongs to active elements group and in most cases the most important signals goes through these elements. In case of testing devices with giant amount of input-output pins, you can take the connector characteristics without deconstructing specified electronics if it s for

2 example car computer that contains connectors with over 20 pins, in the future we would be able to check if IO circuits are electrical correct. When doing measurement, software generates sounds that helps you, because you can focus on doing measurement. If the characteristics is correct, the software plays ok sound and automatically loads next comparison point and shows where you need to touch your measurement electrode. In case when characteristics of measured circuit is over specified tolerance, the software will stop in this place and play error sound, and it s an information where our circuit has failure. This measurement technic is used by NASA. While working with EcuTester for longer time, you ll appreciate possibilities of this method and searching for failures will be easy. EcuTester can t be used to do measurements in high voltage convertors because of the risk of damaging device without previously made discharge of capacitors which may contain high voltages. Thanks to its compact build, EcuTester is device that is easy in transport and allows diagnosis of each electronics type. You can use it to diagnose military, medical, aeronautics, RTV and AGD electronics. Possibilities are infinite. EcuTester - safety: User needs to follow these advices: - During measurement, tested device can t be connected to power source.! - Measured device mass needs to be connected to EcuTester s mass - While testing e.g. capacitors, before test the capacitor needs to be discharged (it can contain energy on high voltage that can damage the device. - EcuTester user needs to have knowledge and experience with electronics repair. - The device can t be used to test any device connected to power network. - If you don t have enough knowledge about working with electronics device, don t try to repair it.

4 EcuTester allows you to: - Compare two current-voltage characteristics between two channels - Compare characteristics of one channel with characteristics saved in.esa template file Setup and first run: EcuTester works with Windows 8 and Windows 10 - Connect 12V power supply to EcuTester - Connect EcuTester to your PC using USB wire - When system will find device install driver from provided link - Next start EcuTester software and select correct COM port

5 Below you can see started EcuTester software. Some windows shows / activates while using software. It makes software more intuitive.

6 If the new version appears, the left-bottom banner will change to one that informs about new update.

7 This box allows you to open and create.esa files In this box you can import files read by any progamator, so you can save photo, binary code and characteristics of electronics in one file.

8 In the next box you can set up additional comments about Device for example series number or factory number In the box below you can see the chart of currently chosen characteristics. - Buffer saved characteristics - A-channel characteristics - B-channel characteristics

9 This box allows you to enter tolerance (base equals 5%). When the measurement is out of the tolerance, the box changes its color to red and plays error sound. You can also select if you want to compare characteristics with buffer or between channels. Comparison between channels allows you to quickly check which circuit is correct and which one has failure.

10 The box below shows the photo of the electronics you re repairing. Below the box you can see button named [KEY SPACE SAVE] which is active when creating template project. Under this button you can also see information about current record number, pin number. Box named [Opis] is used to describe name and id of currently measured circuit. When creating template, you don t need to insert this info and you can only select measured points. [KEY SPACE SAVE] color changes automatically from yellow to green when you should select next measurement point. It protects you from saving same point twice. [Auto Inkrementacja] option active is when you re comparing with buffer and is based on the auto-loading the next point if current is within the selected tolerance. Of course you can hear correct sound, so it increases your testing speed dramatically. On the [KEY SPACE SAVE] button, you ve key called [Korekta] which allows you to get back and fix measurement of previous point during template creation.

11 The box below allows to select EcuTester parameters settings: Frequency you can choose output frequency (important with points that contains capacity or inductivity), so in most cases it doesn t need to be changed Poniższe okno umożliwia ustawienie parametrów EcuTestera: V output you can choose the section of output voltage setting to +-10V allows you to get the most correct characteristics (this parameter also can be set to default) Res out serial resistor selection, which is used to deliver voltage to the measured circuit. This parameter allows you to fix accuracy of the measurement.

12 EcuTester s Settings during measurement: When doing measurement, EcuTester should have default settings set same as shown above, cause they re the best ones: When the graph is drawn too close to the horizontal axis, it means that circuit has high resistance and you need to choose [R 47k ohm] in [Res out] If the graph drawn by EcuTester is too close to vertical axis, you need to choose [R 390 ohm] resistor, because it means that circuit has low resistance. Suggested settings allows to get more precise measurement quickly and the graph is more readable. Using EcuTester you can also test single elements like resistors, capacitors, diodes or transistors. You can also get characteristics of Zener s diodes in range of Voltage to about 20V etc. While creating template to any electronics, the good way is to do IO circuits test in the first step points that have direct connection to outer world, so it means doing measurements on device s connectors. Electronics usually breaks in part, which is connected to the installation in case of vehicles and devices. Testing for example some controller and doing these measurements on its connectors we have possibility to do a quick rate if it s not damaged from the side of the installation. When we found a failure on controller s connector we will have the precise information about the pin it exists, so you can check which elements are damaged using continuity test.

13 It s similar in case of doing measurements inside device. Point in which we ve discrepancy with template is connected with the element that is damaged. Over a dozen years of repairing vehicle electronics allowed me to create this device and increase diagnosis of the electronics several times.
