Starts the Auxiliary Power Unit, which generates bleedair to start the main engines. APU GEN to PWR Electrical Power Panel (RC2) Allows the APU generator to power the aircraft, relieving the battery drain. Battery remains on as a back-up electrical source. L and R AC GEN to PWR Electrical Power Panel (RC2) Once the engines are started, AC generators provide electrical power to the aircraft, relieving the APU. Left Engine to Idle R-ALT+Home Watch left Engine Core Speed Indicator (FD28), wait for left Core Fan RPM to reach 60%. Watch Hydraulic System Pressure Indicator (FD22), wait for left Hydraulic System Pressure (HYD SYS) to reach 3000 psi. Automatically starts fuel flow, uses bleed air from the APU to turn the engines, and ignites fuel in the combustion chamber, starting the left engine. APU GEN to OFF Electrical Power Panel (RC2) Turn to OFF only after left Engine Core Speed Indicator (FD28) reaches 50%. APU GEN on the Caution Light Panel (RC6) will flash and alarm will sound. The APU generator is no longer needed since the engine is providing electrical power through the AC generator. Right Engine to Idle R-CTRL+Home Watch right Engine Core Speed Indicator (FD28), wait for right Core Fan RPM to reach 60%. Watch Hydraulic System Pressure Indicator (FD22), wait for right Hydraulic System Pressure (HYD SYS) to reach 3000 psi. Starts the right engine. APU to OFF Throttles Panel (LC2) Avionics The APU is no longer needed since the engines are started. CDU and EGI power to ON Auxiliary Avionics Panel (RC8) The CDU will have to run through a diagnostic (called Built-In Tests, or BITs), and the EGI will take a few moments to align. You may continue to perform steps while this is happening. Powers on the Control Display Unit (RC7), and Embedded GPS/INS navigation system. Page 2 of 5
5 Uncage SAI Standby Attitude Indicator (FD4) Hover mouse over the knob, then roll mouse wheel down until the red indicator disappears, then roll up to match the horizon. Calibrates the Standby Attitude Indicator. Left and Right MFCDs to ON Lower-left corners of Multifunction Color Displays (FD9, FD21) Left-click on each knob twice. Powers on the Multifunction Color Displays. CICU to ON Armament HUD Control Panel (FD11) The MFCDs (FD9, FD21) will turn white for a few seconds while the CICU powers up. The MFCDs will be unresponsive while this is happening. Powers on the Central Interface Control Unit, which enables user interface controls such as the Multifunction Color Displays. IFFCC to TEST Armament HUD Control Panel (FD11) Left-click once to set to TEST. Powers on the Integrated Flight and Fire Control Computer, which manages weapons calculations and HUD indications. Engage Preflight IFFCC BIT ENT on the Up Front Controller (FD37) Takes about one minute. You may continue to perform steps while this is happening. Ignore pull up and altitude warnings. Starts a series of automated Built-In Tests, which you can monitor on the HUD (FD36). YAW and PITCH SAS to ENGAGE Stability Augmentation System Panel (LC10) Enables pitch and yaw trim control. T/O TRIM Stability Augmentation System Panel (LC10) The nearby TAKEOFF TRIM light will flash while the button is pressed. Sets flight controls for take-off trim. DTS>LOAD ALL Left Multifunction Color Display (FD9), Option Select Button 10 Takes about 15 seconds. During this time, all asterisks accompanying the data types on the left side of the displays will vanish. When they reappear, the data has transferred successfully. Uploads mission data from the data cartridge. Right MFCD to CDU Right Multifunction Color Display (FD21), Option Select Button 13 Wait until the DTS Load sequence (above) is complete before doing this step. Displays the Control Display Unit information on the Right Multifunction Color Display, so you don t have to look down at the Control Display Unit itself (RC7). EXIT the IFFCC BIT ENT on the Up Front Controller (FD37) Exits the completed Integrated Flight and Fire Control Computer Built-In Test. Page 3 of 5

JTRS to ON Armament HUD Control Panel (FD11) Powers on the Joint Tactical Radio System, which provides power to the Situational Awareness Datalink. Tells the Control Display Unit that you are going to use the following selection as the primary navigation system. Enables nosewheel steering, as opposed to rudder steering, which is ineffective at speed under 50 kts. Arm Ejection Seat Left Ejection Seat Handle Click the latch on the left yellow ejection seat handle. When the latch is lying flat, the seat is armed. Arms the ejection seat. Flaps down Throttles Panel (LC2, to the left of the throttle) or F key twice Right-click twice on the white switch to the left of the throttle, or press the F key twice. Sets flaps in take-off position. PITOT to HEAT Environment System Panel (RC3) Take-Off Notes Enables deicing heater. Increase throttle, taxi to runway, then use wheelbrakes to stop (W key). Throttle up to 85% Engine Core Speed (FD28). Release wheelbrakes, increase throttle to maximum. At 50 kts, disable nosewheel steering (INS key). Speed is indicated by the Airspeed Indicator (FD3) and the number in the middle of the left data column on the HUD (FD36). At 120 kts, pitch up 10 degrees. Once airborne, raise landing gear (G key). An alarm will sound while the wheels are going up. Raise flaps (L-SHIFT+F twice). Maintain 180 kts during climb. Page 5 of 5

9 Digital Combat Simulator A-10C Warthog - Navigation Systems (Full) Overview Navigation in the A-10C revolves around the concept of waypoints, which are essentially Xs on a map stored in the Warthog s computer. Flight plans, in effect, are composed of individual waypoints. Waypoints can be loaded into the computer before the mission starts or by the pilot, on-the-fly. Once in the computer, the waypoints can be accessed by many of the Warthog s other navigation systems. For example, an arrow on the HSI (Horizontal Situation Indicator, FD17) can be set to point at a particular waypoint, and the HUD (Heads Up Display, FD36) can easily be configured to display a waypoint over the terrain itself. But before we get into working with waypoints, let s examine some of the Warthog s other navigation systems. Positional Systems For many reasons, it is important for the aircraft to know precisely where it is at all times. To figure this out, the Warthog uses EGI, which stands for Embedded GPS/INS (Inertial Navigation System). In plain English, the EGI uses independent GPS and gyroscopic sensors to check and balance where the aircraft is in space. As a backup, the Warthog also has HARS (Heading Attitude Reference System), another gyroscopic sensor, but one that needs to be recalibrated often, in level flight. Also on board are a host of radio navigation systems, which rely on ground-based beacons to home in on: TACAN (Tactical Air Navigation), ILS (Instrument Landing System), and ADF (Automatic Direction Finder). Using the NMSP to select a navigation system Each positional navigation system has its use, but you ll primarily be using EGI. To set the desired system, refer to the NMSP (Navigation Mode Select Panel, FD18), pronounced nim sip. The buttons on the top row of the NMSP set the system you want to use, either HARS, EGI, or TISL (an old legacy system that you can ignore). The PTR switch simply enables or stows pitch/ roll bars and warning flags on the ADI (Attitude Director Indicator, FD16). The bottom row determines what kind of navigation point to home in on. This can be STR PT (steerpoint, which is simply the currently active waypoint), ANCHR (anchor, a specific waypoint reserved for the mission bullseye ), TCN (TACAN), or ILS. What you choose on these two rows will inform the rest of the Warthog s navigation systems. For example, if TCN is selected, the HUD will show the location of the TACAN beacon, not the steerpoint, anchor, or ILS beacon. Most of the time, you ll want to leave it on STR PT. 10 Digital Combat Simulator A-10C Warthog - Navigation Systems (Full) Readout Systems Many of the instruments on the Warthog are able to read waypoint information from the computer and relay it to the pilot. Using the HSI to follow waypoints and beacons The HSI (Horizontal Situation Indicator, FD17) is your go-to instrument for navigation info. The circular dial acts like a compass, telling you what direction you re going in at all times. Around the dial are little flags that correspond to the steerpoint (the skinny white flag labeled 1 ), TACAN or ADF beacons (the fatter white flag labeled 2 ), and the heading (the white rectangle with a line through it), which can be set using the HEADING SET knob in the lower left corner. The white arrow running through the dial represents the course. The course is also represented numerically in the upper right corner and can be set using the COURSE SET knob in the lower right. The numbers in the upper left corner represent the distance to the selected steerpoint or radio beacon. Which of these this number corresponds to depends on how the NMSP is set. Using the HUD s navigation elements The HUD (Heads Up Display, FD36) displays many things, but we ll just focus on navigation elements for now. When a steerpoint is active, it will show up on the HUD as a small green box. If you are not heading in the steerpoint s general direction, the box will hug one side of the HUD and display the steerpoint s range, as well as the degrees you need to turn to point at the steerpoint. On the bottom of the HUD is the heading tape, which acts as a compass and can also display the heading to your steerpoint in the form of a green rectangle below the hash marks. In the lower right corner of the HUD is the Navigation Data Block, five lines of information about your currently selected steerpoint. They are, from top to bottom, radar altitude, steerpoint number and ID, steerpoint distance to go and target elevation, steerpoint TTG (Time-To-Go) and duration until TOT (Time On Target), and the current time. Using the TAD to view waypoints and flight plans A more sophisticated readout is the TAD (Tactical Awareness Display), which is a page accessed on either of the MFCDs (Multi-Function Color Display), usually the left one (FD9). To get to it, select the left MFCD by holding HOTAS Coolie Left. The first thing you ll see is a map of the area. Concentric rings radiate from your aircraft s icon, indicating range. The range to the outermost ring is displayed in the upper right corner. Green boxes are waypoints, the line running between them is the flight plan, and a yellow box indicates the selected steerpoint. Page 2 of 4
11 Digital Combat Simulator A-10C Warthog - Navigation Systems (Full) Working With Waypoints Now that you know how to read waypoints with your instruments, it s time to learn how to interact with, add, edit, and delete them using the Warthog s computer. To cycle through waypoints (which, in turn, designates them as the steerpoint), you can use either the STEER buttons on left side of the UFC (Up Front Controller, FD37), or HOTAS DMS Up and Down (as long as the HUD is designated as SOI). For anything more complicated than that, you ll have to use the CDU. Using the CDU to edit waypoints The CDU (Control Display Unit, RC7) is the main interface of the Warthog s computer. It is located on the right console (RC7), and can be kind of a pain to look down at it all the time. Fortunately, it s possible to mirror the CDU s screen on an MFCD (usually the right one), making it much easier to interact with. To do this, press HOTAS Coolie Right twice. The right MFCD will change to the WAYPT (waypoint) page of the CDU, as indicated by the first line on the page. Also on this line is the flight plan number (ex. F1 ) and the waypoint number (ex. 1 ). The WAYPT page defaults to showing waypoint 1. To view or edit another waypoint, you must search for it, either by its number or ID. To search by number, enter the desired number on the UFC. The number will show up in the scratch pad area of the HUD so you can be sure you hit the correct button. To lock this in as your search, press OSB19 on the right MFCD. Immediately, the page should update with data from the desired waypoint (EL=elevation, DTOT=Desired Time On Target, N and E values=coordinates). In the lower right corner of the page, the P1/2 indicates that there is another page of information available for this waypoint. To view it, press FUNC on the UFC (top row, between HACK and ENT), then Down on the UFC s DATA rocker switch. The second WAYPT page shows command steering indication scales, steering origin destination setting, Desired Time-To-Go, Desired Time- On-Target, and vertical navigation setting. To search for a waypoint by ID, you ll have to use the letter keys on the CDU panel itself. Enter the first few letters of the desired waypoint s ID, then press LSK Right-3 (the grey button with a white arrow on it in the upper right corner of the panel, to the right of the display) to lock it in. Using the AAP to view mission data There is more than just waypoint information in the Warthog s computer, of course. The AAP (Auxiliary Avionics Panel, RC8) controls what kind of information the CDU displays. If you d like to check the coordinates of the mission bullseye or know more detailed information about the aircraft s position, the AAP has you covered. Page 3 of 4
12 Digital Combat Simulator A-10C Warthog - Navigation Systems (Full) At the top of the AAP are two unlabeled switches which control power to the CDU and EGI (from left to right). Below the switches are two knobs labeled STEER PT and PAGE. The position of the STEER PT knob tells the CDU what kind of waypoints you would like to interact with, either FLT PLAN (only those waypoints that make up the flight plan), MARK (only mark waypoints, which exist outside the flight plan), or MISSION (all non-mark waypoints, including those on the flight plan). For example, if you turn the knob to MARK and cycle through waypoints, none of the waypoints on your flight plan will come up in the cycle. The PAGE knob selects which page to show on the CDU display. WAYPT shows info on the selected waypoint (that is, selected by the CDU, not necessarily the steerpoint), STEER shows info on the steerpoint, and POSITION shows info about the aircraft s position. All these pages simply display information and are read-only (i.e. they cannot be edited). To edit the attributes of a waypoint, set the PAGE knob to OTHER. Radio Beacons Now that we have an understanding of waypoints, let s get back to the other navigation points we mentioned earlier: radio beacons. While waypoints exist as coordinates in an aircraft s computer, radio beacons are physical objects, usually located at airfields or onboard large refueling aircraft. Homing in on radio beacons To home in on a radio beacon, first select the desired beacon type on the NMSP, either TCN (TACAN) or ILS. Let s stick with TCN for now. With TCN selected on the NMSP, we now have to dial in to the correct TACAN channel. TACAN beacons each have their own unique channels, which are given to pilots before the mission. TACAN channels start with a number of up to three digits and end with either an X or a Y. For example, 53X is an different channel from 53Y. Turn the left knob on the TACAN Control Panel (RC9) by left-clicking to change the first two digits. Left-click the middle knob to change the last digit, and right-click to change the pulse modulation channel (X or Y). The right knob controls the state of the aircraft s TACAN transmitter/reciever. OFF=off, REC=recieve-only, T R=transmit/recieve, A A REC=recieve from air-to-air beacons only, such as aerial tankers (recieves range data only), A A T R=two-way transmission from air-to-air beacons (recieves range and bearing). The knob will probably be on T R for most of the time. Once dialed in, the Warthog s navigation systems will align to the TACAN beacon, just as they would if the NMSP were set to follow waypoints. On the HSI, the bearing pointer 1 will point toward the station and the range ( MILES ) will indicate its range. You may be able hear to the TACAN signal being broadcast in Morse code. The VOL knob on the TACAN Control Panel controls its volume. Page 4 of 4
