11 1. OVERVIEW The ADP-40 Analog Door Phone is a compact, weather and vandal resistant, telephone line powered speaker phone designed to provide two-way handsfree communication. The ADP-40 s compact size allows it to be mounted in any standard, single-gang electrical box. It can be connected directly to any analog station port on the NetVanta 7100 when the port is configured as a hotline phone. Multiple ADP-40 s can be used with the NetVanta 7100, each connected to a separate analog station port. The ADP-40 can also be used on any analog Private Automatic Branch exchange/key Service Unit (PABX/KSU) station programmed for hotline or automatic ring-down (if the station supports forward disconnect). When the CALL button is pressed, the ADP-40 goes off-hook and remains off-hook until a forward disconnect is detected from the NetVanta 7100 or the three-minute call time out period has elapsed. The unit then automatically disconnects. The ADP-40 may also be disconnected by pressing the CALL button again. The ADP-40 features microphone and speaker volume controls and automatically answers incoming calls for remote monitoring or answering a speaker phone call. The ADP-40 (shown in Figure 1) is ready to use out of the box when connected to a provisioned analog station port on the NetVanta Figure 1. 13 . ADP-40 Analog Door Phone Hardware Installation Guide Installation 2. INSTALLATION The ADP-40 Analog Door Phone is designed to be flush mounted in any standard single-gang electrical box with a minimum depth of 1.75 inches (not included). The ADP-40 can also be surface mounted in any standard single-gang wet location (weather proof) electrical box with a minimal depth of 1.75 inches (not included). Flush Mounting New Construction 1. Fasten a standard, single-gang electrical box to a stud using standard flathead drywall screws. The front of the box should extend approximately 1/2 inch from the front surface of the wall stud on which it is mounted (this could vary depending on the wall sheathing and siding thickness). 2. When installing the siding, cut a hole just large enough for the electrical box opening. The electrical box must be mounted flush and must not extend beyond the front surface of the siding. Flush Mounting Old Work 1. Make sure the mounting location is free of wall studs, wires, etc. 2. Place the electrical box level against the siding. Trace the outline of the box on the siding. 3. Cut a hole through the siding and wall sheathing just large enough for the electrical box. 4. Fasten a standard, single-gang electrical box to the siding using standard flathead drywall screws. The front surface of the electrical box can be mounted flush against wood siding or can be recessed and mounted flush against sheathing when mounting on aluminum, steel, or vinyl siding. Cutting the hole in the siding too large can cause faceplate misalignment and compromise the gasket seal. When mounting to 4-inch or less horizontal lap siding, the unit can be flush mounted horizontally against the siding or a siding mounting block can be used. Contact your siding installer for the correct mounting block part number. Surface Mounting A standard single-gang wet location (weather proof) electrical box (Pass & Seymour 93C6 or equivalent) can be used to surface mount the ADP Drill a small wire exit hole in the wall. 2. Pull the wire through and seal the hole around the wire with putty or caulking. 3. Route the wire into the wet location electrical box. 4. Secure the box to the wall or a post and seal the hole in the box around the wire with putty or caulking. In surface mount applications, conduit can be used to route the wire to the electrical box L1-34A Copyright 2006 ADTRAN, Inc. 13
14 Installation ADP-40 Analog Door Phone Hardware Installation Guide Wiring 1. Connect the red (ring) and green (tip) wires attached to the rear of the circuit board to the center pair of your CAT 5 cable using the gel-filled butt connectors provided (see Figure 2). The gel-filled (water-tight) butt connectors are designed for insulation displacement on 19- to 26-gauge wire with a maximum insulation of inches. Do not strip wires prior to terminating. 2. Crimp the gel-filled butt connectors with pliers. Electronic devices are susceptible to lightning and power station electrical surges from both the AC outlet and the telephone line. It is recommended that a surge protector be installed to protect against such surges. Grounding (optional) To increase surge protection, ADTRAN recommends grounding the ADP Loosen the PCB mounting screw labeled (as shown in Figure 2). 2. Fasten a wire to the provided ring terminal and connect the ring terminal from the PCB mounting screw to earth ground (grounding rod, water pipe, etc.). 3. After connecting the ring terminal to the PCB mounting screw, bend the terminal up to avoid interference with the electrical box. Ring Connector (included) Earth Ground (optional) Rear View of the Circuit Board Mounting Plate Red (Ring) * Gel-Filled Butt Connectors (included) Not polarity sensitive Green (Tip) To Analog Station Figure 2. Wiring the ADP Copyright 2006 ADTRAN, Inc L1-34A
15 ADP-40 Analog Door Phone Hardware Installation Guide Installation Assembling 1. After an electrical box is securely mounted and wires are connected, remove the paper liner from the faceplate gasket. 2. Place the side of the gasket from which you removed the paper toward the back side of faceplate, aligning the gasket with the CALL button hole. 3. Push the 1-inch, 6-32 screws through the faceplate holes and the small holes in the gasket. 4. Position the circuit board mounting plate over the screws (see Figure 3). 5. Align the hexdrive screws with the electrical box screw holes and tighten the screws until the gasket is fully collapsed and the CALL button is protruding through the clearance hole in the faceplate. The included 1/4-inch thick gasket provides an adequate seal for most siding surfaces; however, for rough surfaces (i.e., brick, stucco, etc.) additional caulking may be required. 16 Operation ADP-40 Analog Door Phone Hardware Installation Guide 3. OPERATION Adjusting Speaker and Microphone Volumes Figure 4 shows the speaker and microphone volume controls set in the factory default positions. The speaker and microphone volume controls can be adjusted to increase or decrease the speaker or microphone volumes to the desired level. In noisy locations (background traffic, machinery, or wind), the microphone volume may need to be decreased if the distant party is inaudible over the speaker. If the microphone volume is set too high or too low, communication may suffer in one or both directions. 1. If volume adjustment is necessary, remove the faceplate and circuit board mounting plate. 2. Turn the circuit board mounting plate over to access the speaker and microphone volume controls. Adjust the volumes to the desired levels (see Figure 4). 3. Push the screws through the faceplate holes and the small holes in the gasket. 4. Position the circuit board mounting plate over the screws. 5. Align the hexdrive screws with the electrical box screw holes and tighten the screws until the gasket is fully collapsed and the CALL button is protruding through the clearance hole in the faceplate. Rear View of the Circuit Board Mounting Plate Speaker Volume Microphone Volume Note: Volume Controls are shown in factory default settings. Figure 4. Volume Controls Call Time Out The ADP-40 is equipped with a fixed call time out feature that automatically disconnects the unit after three minutes. Auto Answer The ADP-40 is factory set to automatically answer when an inbound call is detected. Call Button When the CALL button is pressed, the ADP-40 phone goes off-hook, much like a standard speaker phone. In the event that the line is busy or there is a ring-no-answer, the ADP-40 can be disconnected by pressing the CALL button. It automatically hangs up when a forward disconnect is received from the NetVanta 7100 or the three-minute call time out period elapses. 16 Copyright 2006 ADTRAN, Inc L1-34A
