Smart Interface Installation and operating guide
Introduction 2 Smart Interface Installation and operation Safety 3 The MK astral TM Smart Interface provides control of the astral system output devices using an APP for your smart phone or tablet using the wi-fi facility of your existing home router. It allows you to create multiple areas to emulate the installation within your home. Devices are then named and allocated to these areas. Scenes can then be created in these area as required. The APP allows you display, select and control individual devices or scenes either from within a specific area or across the whole installation. A built in RS232 interface allows integration and control of the astral system from other systems or from a PC using an appropriate control program, (not provided by MK). For further information on the RS2322 functionality and protocol please refer to The interface is suitable for either desk or wall mounting and should be mounted in dry indoor locations only. Scene control and dimming When activating a scene, the devices will always go to their programmed level for that scene. Dimming a scene will maintain any difference in level between devices. Group control Group control can be provided by configuring a scene with all devices having the same programmed scene level. Suitable for use in dry interior locations only. Always follow the manufacturer s advice when using power tools, steps, ladders etc. and wear appropriate protective equipment such as safety goggles when drilling holes. Before drilling holes in walls, check for hidden electricity cables and water pipes, and use a cable/pipe locater if in doubt. Ensure all cables are neat and tidy and if necessary secured to avoid accidentally pulling them and damaging the cable or interface connection.
Installation Smart Interface Installation and operation 5 Power and status indicators Smart Phone / Wi-Fi Connection: Connect the Ethernet port on the interface to your Wi-Fi router. Remove the protective cover from the power supply and snap in the appropriate plug module. 2 Insert latch into notch Notch for latch 1 Slide down and release insert Connect and switch on the power supply adaptor and wait until the power indicator stops flashing. Connect your smart phone to the router via Wi-Fi and download and install the APP. The APP will automatically locate and connect to the interface when it is run. Astral Network Z-Wave Astral iphone Interface Wi-Fi Router RJ45 patch lead RS232 (not supplied) Wi-Fi Do not locate the interface within metal cabinets or behind metal doors. Ensure all cables are tidy and if necessary secured to avoid the risk of entanglement and damage to the cables/connectors. Smart Phone or Tablet PC or Controller equipment Wall Mounting the Interface: Position the fixing screws 108mm apart leaving 4mm of the screw protruding to fit the interface over. Adjust the screw depth if required Drill 6mm holes for the wall plugs. Note: The wall plugs supplied are not suitable for plasterboard walls. The interface has a power and status indictor that illuminate during use to show the various operational states of the device POWER INDICATOR: Flashing Blue Device powering up and not yet ready for operation Power Indicator: Permanent Blue Device powered up and operational STATUS INDICATOR: Single Red Flash Every 5 Seconds Device not included in a system Status Indicator: Flash Green Rapidly RF communications in progress
APP Navigation and Controls 7 Area selection Edit: Create, delete and name Areas and reorder the list The Area, Device and Scene Edit screens allow you to configure and customise your system by creating, deleting and naming entries and re-ordering the area, device and scene lists. Tap from the Area, Device and Scene edit screens to rename an area or configure a device or scene. To erase an Area or Scene tap beside a list entry and then tap Delete. Touch and drag against a list entry to move it to a new position in the list. Tap Tap to create a new Area or a new Scene within the currently defined area. within the Area selection screen to display system and APP release information. Edit: Locate and name Devices and assign to an area Edit: Create, delete and name Scenes and reorder the list Tap within the Device configuration screen to display and update detailed device data information. In the device configuration screen you have the ability to "HIDE" a device in the APP. This prevents it being displayed and consequently controlled during normal operation. All astral input devices, such as remote controls etc, will be automatically hidden to avoid confusion as these devices have no control over a lamp or blind. Display, select, control and edit either devices or scenes in the chosen area
Programming the interface into a new system 9 The ideal time to install the Interface into the network is when you install the entire system for the first time. To install the entire system for the first time, follow the MK astral TM quick start guide. Ensure that the Interface is the first additional device to be added to the network selecting your primary controller Quick start guide Step 1: INCLUDING THE INTERFACE INTO THE SYSTEM Ensure the Interface is reset and providing the not in network indication. If necessary NVM reset the interface first. 1. Place the networks primary controller into Inclusion Mode. 2. When you need to select the interface to add it into the system, press the program button on the rear of the interface 3. If the interface is added successfully the status indicator on the front of the interface will flash green 3 times. The Interface will take the role of a Z-Wave SUC/SIS device in the network. If there is already a SUC/ SIS device in the network the interface will become a standard secondary controller (For further information on Z-Wave SUC/SIS capability please refer to pages and the Zensys website.) Step 2: COMPLETE INCLUSION OF OTHER DEVICES AND SYSTEM INSTALLATION Continue to include the other devices into the system using the Remote Control as normal Ensure that all mains powered products are include before any Remote Controls or Battery Controllers and work outwards away from the Interface.
Programming the interface into an existing system 11 To add the interface into an existing system, please refer to your MK astral TM system programming guide for instructions on adding a products to an existing system in conjunction with the following instructions. System programming guide Step 1: INCLUDE THE INTERFACE INTO THE SYSTEM Ensure the Interface is reset and providing the not in network indication. If necessary NVM reset the interface first. 1. Refer to your system manual for inclusion and place the networks primary controller into Inclusion Mode. 2. When you need to select the interface to add it into the system, press the program button on the rear of the interface. 3. If the interface is added successfully the status indicator on the front of the interface will flash green 3 times. The Interface will take the role of a Z-Wave SUC/SIS device in the network. If there is already a SUC/SIS device in the network the interface will become a standard secondary controller (For further information on Z-Wave SUC/SIS capability please refer to pages and the Zensys website.) Step 2: RE-INCLUDE ALL EXISTING NETWORK DEVICES If the interface was included as a secondary controller because the network already contained a SUC/ SIS device then ignore this step. To enable the interface's automatic network maintenance capability, all existing network devices must be aware of the interface. This is achieved by re-including all devices into the network. Do not exclude the devices first. Refer to your system programming guide for instructions on inclusion. Include all mains powered products before any battery powered products and work outwards away from the Interface.
Other programming functions 13 EXCLUDING THE INTERFACE FROM THE SYSTEM Note: You cannot exclude an interface which is the systems SUC/SIS device. In such cases exclusion can only be achieved via the NVM reset process. To exclude an interface which is a secondary controller from the network: 1. Refer to your system manual and put one of the inclusion controllers into exclude mode. 2. Press the Program button on the interface twice within 1 second. 3. If the interface is excluded successfully the status indicator will flash red 3 times. NVM RESET WARNING: Use NVM Reset with extreme caution and only prior to resetting all products and completely rebuilding the network. 1. Hold down the Program button for 15 seconds until the status indicator turns red and then release the button. The indicator will start flashing red. 2. While the indicator is flashing red press the Program button for 2 seconds until the indicator turns green and then release the button. 3. The status indicator will flash red 10 times while the interface is reset and factory settings are restored. The interface will then no longer be part of any network and will show its not in network indication.
Z-Wave SUC/SIS functionality 15 Further information on Z-Wave SUC/SIS capability can be found on the Zensys and Z-Wave websites. INCLUSION CONTROLLERS If the interface adopts the SUC/SIS role in the network it will take over the role of the network primary controller. All astral Remote Controls and Battery controllers in the network will then become an Inclusion controller. This means that any Remote Control or Battery Controller in the network can be used to include or exclude devices to and from the network and not just the original Primary Controller. AUTOMATIC NETWORK UPDATES With a SUC/SIS in the network all other devices will periodically check for any network updates from the SUC/SIS. If the network structure has changed then the new data will automatically be downloaded to maximise the networks routing capability and efficiency This means that the manual replication process needed after adding or removing a device is no longer essential, as over a period of time this information will be automatically spread throughout the network to all devices. All astral devices incorporate the ability to manually request any network updates from the systems SUC/SIS device. These manual update requests can be initiated as follows... Manual Network update requests from an astral Remote Control or Battery Controller: 1. A single short press on the Dis button Inc Exc Asc Dis 2. The Dis LED will illuminate RED while contact is established with the SUC/SIS and flash Red while any updates/information exchange take place. Manual Network update requests from an astral switch or Dimmers: 1. A single short press on the Exc/Dis button Inc/Asc Exc/Dis 2. The Exc/Dis LED will illuminate RED while contact is established with the SUC/SIS and flash Red while any updates/information exchange take place. Manual Network update requests from an astral Smart Interface included as a secondary controller: 1. A single short press on the Program button 2. The Status LED will illuminate Yellow while contact is established with the SUC/SIS and flash Yellow while any updates/information exchange take place.
