Sun Solaris Processors The ps ri nfo-ba s ed connector (SEN_HW_SunPs ri nfo.hdf) di s covers a nd moni tors the proces s ors on Sun Sol a ri s s ys tems. Sun Solaris Servers On Sun Sol a ri s s ervers a bl e to report thi s i nforma ti on, BMC Performa nce Ma na ger Expres s for Ha rdwa re di s covers the LEDs of the s erver (s een outs i de but a l s o i ns i de the cha s s i s ) a nd reports thei r s ta tus (on, off or bl i nki ng). An a l ert i s tri ggered i f a LED reports a n i nterna l fa i l ure. To better represent the hardware components of servers and storage devices, new classes have been created: SEN_HW_TAPEDRIVE, representing tape drives SEN_HW_LED, representing LEDs SEN_HW_CPUCORE, representing individual cores in a physical CPU package SEN_HW_ROBOTICS, representing robotic mechanisms, like media changers in a tape library SEN_HW_BATTERY, representing batteries in disk controllers and on motherboards. Some hardware components that used to be presented with the SEN_HW_OTHERDEVICE generic class in previous versions of BMC Performa nce Ma na ger Expres s for Ha rdwa re now use the appropriate class. New parameters have been added to the SEN_HW_NETWORK class to monitor the traffic on Ethernet and fiber ports: ReceivedBytes TransmittedBytes ReceivedBytesRate TransmittedBytesRate BandwidthUtilization A new report is available on demand through the Report tab to visualize the traffic on the different ports of a system (server or fiber switch). The report can be displayed as a multi-parameter graph on Portal environment and it shows the total amount of data in gigabytes that were received and transmitted by each port on an hourly or daily basis. Electricity consumption: 6

7 When the managed system is not able to report its power consumption, BMC Performa nce Ma na ger Expres s for Ha rdwa re evaluates it based on the type of the discovered internal parts of the system and their activity. A new report is available on demand through the Report tab to visualize the energy usage of the system in kwh (kilowatts hour) over several days, on an hourly or daily basis. A new UnallocatedSpace parameter has been added to the SEN_HW_LOGICALDISK class to represent the disk space in storage pool available for allocation for a server. This parameter is available only when monitoring a disk array. A new class has been added to report various capacity and sizing metrics of the managed system: Physical CPU Count, reports the number of physical processors (not counting cores) Memory Size, reports the total size of physical memory Total Physical Disk Size, reports the total size of all physical disks Total Logical Disk Size, reports the total size of volumes handled by the disk controllers Total Unallocated Space, reports the total amount of free space available on the disks (only on disk arrays) Power Consumption, reports the power consumption (in Watts) of the system Energy Usage, reports the energy usage of the system in kwh (kilowatts hour) Connected Ethernet/Fiber Ports, reports the number of Ethernet and fiber connected ports What's Changed Some SMI-S compliant devices actually require the installation of an SMI-S Agent on a separate server or workstation. This SMI-S Agent connects to the managed disk arrays or fiber switches and reports the status of these devices to SMI-S client, as BMC Performa nce Ma na ger Express for Hardware. Such SMI-S Agent, installed on a separate system, is sometimes called a proxy agent. In version of BMC Performa nce Ma na ger Express for Hardware with version of the former Storage Add-on, the monitoring of a disk array or fiber switch through an SMI-S proxy agent was performed as if the hardware components of the managed device were actually located on the proxy system. This is no longer the case. Starting with version , the monitoring of an external disk array or fiber switch through an SMI-S proxy agent requires a manual configuration of the Performance Manager. By default, BMC Performa nce Ma na ger Express for Hardware will discover and monitor the hardware components of the local system it is running on only. In order to monitor the storage devices behind the proxy agent, you need to add a new Managed Element with a following characteristics: Name it from either the actual monitored storage device behind the proxy, or simply the name of proxy agent ( Brocade-SMIS, for example). Specify the IP address or hostname of the system running the proxy agent Specify Storage as the element platform type (even for a fiber switch) Select Hardware (Storage) as the solution to load for this element Please refer to the User Guide for more information about this procedure 7

8 The connector dedicated to the monitoring of IBM ServeRAID controllers in IBM xseries servers through the IBM ServeRAID Manager Agent has been renamed to SMI-S Compliant RAID Controller. It covers all IBM ServeRAID controllers (from LSI and Adaptec) as well as the HP SmartArray controllers through the WMI interface of the HP Insight Management Agents. When available, BMC Performa nce Ma na ger Expres s for Ha rdwa re now leverages the SNMP MIB-2 layer of the system in order to gather the status and traffic information about the network cards. Depending on the platform the advantages are diverse. On Windows systems, this avoids the use of WMI which is more resource-intensive and much more demanding at the firewall level. It also provides more information on the network traffic. On Solaris and Linux systems, it avoids the need for the root account in order to gather all of the network-related information. On Sun Solaris servers, Illegal Requests are no longer reported by the ErrorCount parameter of the physical disk class. Illegal requests were often triggered by the regular use of Sun Solaris utilities like sysinfo and Sun Explorer and actually caused by a bug in a Sun driver. As Illegal Requests are part of the Soft Errors category reported by the Solaris kernel and to avoid false alerts being triggered, choice has been made to stop reporting about these errors. On sun4v systems (Sun SPARC T1/T2-based servers) with the appropriate firmware level, the monitoring is done with the prtpicl -based connector and no longer requires the root privileges to execute Sun Explorer s snapshot command. The display of the parameters in the BMC Portal is now dynamically managed according to the data collected from the monitored element. Only the parameters for which a value is collected are displayed in the BMC Portal. Processor Clock Speed Monitoring As the proces s or cl ock s peed ca n va ry over ti me, a new CurrentSpeed pa ra meter ha s been a dded to the SEN_HW_CPU, repres enti ng the current cl ock s peed of the proces s or i n mega hertz. The CurrentSpeed pa ra meter ca n often be di rectl y l i nked to the proces s or ti me us a ge a nd power cons umpti on of the s ys tem. 11 Supported Platforms and Requirements For BPM Express for Hardware to collect information from a managed element, it requires specific instrumentation agents or system management tools to be present on the managed element. A specific hardware agent is often required on each managed element depending on its underlying components.
