20 16th World Congress on Disaster and Emergency Medicine in Victoria, BC, May 2009 About 600 delegates from 60 countries came together at Victoria Conference Centre to attend the 16th World Congress on Disaster and Emergency Medicine, a biannual event convened by the World Association for Disaster and Emergency Medicine (WADEM). The Congress was devoted to equipping health professionals to prepare for and respond to disasters and health emergencies around the world. It is known as the premier event for the discussion of disaster and emergency health. Stevens, D. & Szarzynski, J. (2009): Space-Based Solutions for Disaster and Emergency Medicine. Prehosp. Disast. Med., 2009, 24(2): 79.
21 IEEE GEOSS Workshop XXVIII Health and the Environment, Geneva (7-9 July 2009) About 45 delegates from 10 countries came together at the WMO Headquarters Building to attend the IEEE GEOSS Workshop XXVIII Health and the Environment organised in association with CEOS, CNES, USEPA, JRC, IRI, HCF, ICEO, IEEE EMBS, ISPRS, GEO, NOAA, OGC, WHO. The workshop focussed on improving in-situ environmental and health data collection for the utilization and validation of remotely-sensed data for the Global Earth Observation System of Systems GEOSS. Specifically, the question was raised how GEOSS can support the collection & distribution of health and environment information and meet the diverse needs of the health community. One important result was the launch of the GEOSS Health and Environment Community of Practice with UNOOSA/UN-SPIDER as a member. Lead was taken by M. Lafaye (CNES, France) and R. Dhiman (ICMR, India).
22 EM DAT Technical Advisory Group Meeting (TAG) October 2009, New York The TAG Meeting was co organised by the WHO Collaborating Center for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED) and the United Nations Development Program, Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery (UNDP/BCPR), within the context of the EM DAT Disaster Database project, sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development, Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA). EM-DAT: The Emergency Event Database provides methodologically- compiled data on global disater occurrence and impact. The main objective of this database is to serve the purpose of humanitarian action at national and international levels. It is an initiative aimed to rationalise decision making for disaster prepardness, as well as providing an objective base for vulnerability assessment and priority setting.
