11 What is Fibre Optic Cable? Hair-size glass tubes transmit data using light waves between endpoints Advantages: Lighter, Thinner and Faster - than other types of cables High capacity - supports long distances No interference, non-flammable, low maintenance Getting cheaper from demand Many fibre optic applications, other than communications medical endoscopes/arthroscopies, pipe inspections 11

12 What is Dark Fibre? A dark fibre or unlit fibre is an unused optical fibre cable City of Nelson provides dark fibre, as a utility Customer network electronics (switches) light up / enable the fibre and determine data speeds - between endpoints Dark Fibre utility fees start at $150 per month Bylaws = Fees + Optic Fibre Terms of Use 12

13 CON Fibre (Broadband) Service The City has been delivering a high-speed fibre optic cable network to businesses, schools and provincial agencies, starting in March 2014: 1. By installing fibre service to users (buildings & businesses) 2. By leasing the fibre service to the users, on a monthly basis 3. By working with Service Providers and Local Technology businesses - to support exceptional networking, internet and online services 4. By working with local businesses to increase awareness of technology adoption and system upgrades required 13

20 Typical Customer Fibre Installation We provide a point-to-point connection between the business and the CON datacentre The City Fibre cable is connected 1. From City Hall Datacentre over/under/around town 2. To the closest Nelson Hydro pole, midspan or underground conduit 3. Into a building s shared communication room 4. A Fibre Optic Panel terminates the dark fibre cable The business connects fibre cable to their network equipment to change it from dark to lit-up 20
