3 Highlights from the 2013 Call RoI organisations won 11M or 3.67% of the EC budget that s a net injection of roughly 7M into the Irish economy 6M went to RoI SMEs including Aconite, Future Analytics, Saadian, Gavin & Doherty Geosolutions, RODIS, Analyze IQ, Skytek, Espion, Data Fusion Intl., Stillwater, CIES, Pintail, Kinesense, Q4PR RoI organisations coordinated 5 of the 66 winning projects (from across Europe) there were 2 SME coordinators (Skytek and Kinesense) and 3 academic (Khurshid Ahmad TCD-Computer Science, Alan O Connor TCD-Civil Eng., and Karen Neville UCC- Business) Other RoI organisations to be funded are United Technologies Research Centre, Bord Gais, UCC Tyndall, TCD Psychology, HSE, An Garda Siochana, EMC/RSA, GOAL Overall there were 33 Irish participations in winning projects

7 Horizon 2020 is different (and it s the same) Less prescription, strong emphasis on expected impact Simplified list of possible types of action (e.g., Research and Innovation action 100%; Innovation actions 70%;.) Cross-cutting issues mainstreamed (e.g., social sciences, gender, international ) Work Programmes with a 2-year duration Various Calls and Deadlines be careful!

8 The Secure Societies Challenge (still subject to change) Main Areas Disaster Resilient Societies (27 Topics, 5 sub-headings) Crisis Management & Civil Protection, Disaster Resilience & Climate Change (from Climate Action, Resources and Raw Materials, Challenge 5 with their budget), Critical Infrastructure Protection (includes the new SME* instrument which has an earlier deadline), Communication Interoperability, Ethical/Societal dimension Fight against Crime and Terrorism (15 Topics) Forensics, Law Enforcement, Urban Security, Ethical/Societal Dimension, includes the Fast Track to Innovation Topic with maximum 5 partners, up to 3M, bottom-up, continuously open and covering a wide range of fields but note it opens in 2015 Border and External Security (15 Topics under 6 sub-headings) Maritime Border Security, Border Crossing Points, Supply Chain Security, Ethical/Societal dimension, Information Management, Conflict prevention and peace building Digital Security / Cybersecurity, Privacy & Trust (6 Topics) funded by DG CNECT Other Actions

10 Call for Action All Work Programmes will be published on 11 th December 2013 With exceptions (e.g., the first SME Call) the official 2014 Calls are scheduled for 25 th March - the deadline is not yet clear At any rate you should start preparing well before the official call Join the Irish Security Research Network (serenity) For local networking participate in a serenity event Identify Topics of interest in the Work Programme Feature in the Guide to Irish Organisations with propositions in security Familiarise yourself with funded EC FP7 Security projects on Attend SMI2G brokerage event for international networking Work with me!!!
