2 NATO Hub on Energy Security Expertise The NATO Energy Security Centre of Excellence is an international hub on energy security expertise. It supports NATO, NATO nations and partners in enhancing cooperative energy security through knowledge, expertise and strategy. Energy developments can have significant impact on societies and military operations, as the energy infrastructure they depend on are subject to security risks. The NATO ENSEC COE was established to develop NATO s capability in the area of energy security, which includes enhancing and supporting: ENERGY EFFICIENCY in the military through technological solutions and management reducing consumption, costs, dependency, logistics and environmental footprint to increase the security and effectiveness of operations. CRITICAL ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURE PROTECTION through building resilience against disruptions due to security risks political instability, hybrid threats, cyber attacks, armed conflicts, terrorism, piracy, natural disasters and civil emergencies. STRATEGIC AWARENESS of energy developments with security implications through sharing intelligence in geopolitics (eg. energy policy), economics (scarcity), technology (cross-border grids) and environment (climate change).

4 Cooperation platform The NATO ENSEC COE within its mandate serves as a platform for cooperation embracing military, academic and industry experts. It has developed an extensive network of partners, including institutions, organisations, universities, think-tanks, industry and other NATO Centres of Excellence. The Centre also hosts an internship, fellowship and visiting professionals programme. 5 Selected projects EDUCATION Energy Security Strategic Awareness Course Offered annually by the NATO School Oberammergau in cooperation with the United States Naval Postgraduate School. RESEARCH Hybrid Conflict and Critical Energy Infrastructure: The Case of Ukraine Focussing on the relation between energy and conflict and improving the resilience of energy infrastructure against threats. CONFERENCE & EXHIBITION Innovative Energy Solutions for Military Applications (IESMA) Organized bi-annually in cooperation with NATO partner nations, bringing together experts from military, academia and industry. RESEARCH Energy Efficiency: Cultural Change Identifying the cultural means which facilitate turning energy into a critical enabler for military operations and an efficient capability in power projection in areas of concern for NATO. TECHNOLOGY Deployable Modular Hybrid Power Generation & Management System (HPGS) In use by the Lithuanian Armed Forces, financed by Canada and awarded with the French Energy Transition Trophy EXERCISE Table Top Exercise (TTX) Supporting nations in building resilience and NATO in developing competence in protecting critical energy infrastructure, organized annually involving governmental, public and private institutions. MANAGEMENT Energy Management in the Military Expeditionary Environment Baseline study and procured manual model for ISO based energy management, to be tested and verified by a NATO ACT-led experiment in cooperation with France.
