2 Cloud: Where we want to go Cloud (klaʊd) an elastic execution environment of resources involving multiple stakeholders and providing a metered service at multiple granularities for a specified level of quality (of service). Broaden the addressable problem space - Interoperability Protocols, Portability, - Interconnection of clouds Distributed resources management, - Network Integration Network/Data Center i/f, deployment orchestration, - Address requirements from users and applications - Trust Reliability, Security framework, - Compliance with national, regional regulation Data ownership/protection, - CAPEX and OPEX reduction SLA, provisioning, monitoring, - Main conclusion of ETSI Cloud Workshop (20/06/2011) Most of the barriers are still there! 5

6 A complex Standardization Playground Support services/applications of "cloud computing" making use of telecommunication networks ITU-T specifications used by China to build local standards in CCSA Address Cloud Billing, Cloud Business Process Framework, Cloud Security, Cloud Service Definitions, Cloud SLA Management, joint work with DMTF Focus on a solution which covers the provisioning, monitoring and definition of Cloud Infrastructure services. Proposed joint efforts with the DMTF for OCCI Focus on the operators' provision of cloud services, and develop a framework to ensure integration of the network and IT Enable interoperability within and over the internet by defining appropriate protocols Key to link the cloud and the networks aspects Focuses on standardizing interactions between cloud environments by developing cloud resource management protocols, packaging formats and security mechanisms to facilitate interoperability. Help cloud providers develop industry-recommended, secure and interoperable identity, access and compliance management configurations, and practices. IEEE two recent groups created, P2301 focussing on portability of application and P2302 on protocols for interoperation and federation of clouds. 6

7 Conclusions The three challenges for business, technology and standards - Match more complex user demands on network offerings - Enable distributed, dynamic, multi-tenant, orchestrated cloud - Address the return of the hidden requirements (security, data ownership, ) A role for ETSI? - Gather a wide range of actors in the same discussion space - Address the big picture: an architectural approach? - Support interoperability in specifications and in practice - Map regulatory needs and industry requirements - Channel pre-standardization work from research How can this happen? - Broader range of ETSI members involved - Focused relationship with EC (research, regulation, ) And maybe a little help from our friend(s)?
