To open a ticket, go to the SoftLayer Customer Portal. Select the VMware Solutions product as the subject of your ticket. What to do next Exit the maintenance mode. Related concepts: Planning VMware Cloud Foundation instances on page 13 Plan your Cloud Foundation instances based on your location and workload capacity requirements. Related information: Place a host in maintenance mode Applying updates and patches The IBM Cloud for VMware Solutions console periodically detects and lists the aailable software updates and patches that you can apply to your VMware irtual enironment. Before you begin Before you apply an update, reiew the following details: Verify the ersion of the update. You must apply the updates in chronological sequence. Make sure that you applied all the preious updates before you apply the most recent one. Verify the impact of the update on the VMware irtual enironment. The following list shows how different leels of impacts affect the system. Low This update does not affect any systems. You do not need to apply it during scheduled downtime. Medium This update might affect some systems. It is recommended that you apply it during scheduled downtime. Seere This update affects some or all systems. You must apply it during scheduled downtime. 18 IBM Cloud for VMware Solutions

About this task An aailable update is a record in the software updates list of the instance. You can apply only one update per endor at a time, either immediately or you can schedule it for a later time. As a measure of protection for the enironment, eery time that you apply an update, a backup of the management irtual machines is done automatically before starting the update. The update is applied after the backup job, which runs in the background, is completed. Procedure 1. Click Cloud Foundation Instances at the left side of the banner. 2. Click the instance to update. 3. Click Update and Patch from the left naigation. 4. Select the update to apply. 5. To perform an immediate update, click Update now. To schedule a future update, click Schedule update. Results After you apply an update, a record appears in the software update history list. To retriee the most recent status for an update job, click Refresh from the Status column. See the following list for details about the update statuses: In progress The update job is initiated but not finished yet. You are not able to apply any other updates before the current update job completes. Scheduled The update job is scheduled for a later time. The update job will start automatically at the time that you scheduled. Not ready A preious update is not applied. You must apply all preious updates in chronological order before you apply this update. Failed The update job did not complete. The console reports an error notification after an update failure. Reiew the error and fix the reported issue before you attempt to reapply the update. Installed The update job is completed. The corresponding component of the VMware platform is updated. Backup and restore operations for VMware Cloud Foundation instances You can create a backup image for the current configuration of your management components. In a management serer failure situation, you can restore the components from a backup image. Related tasks: Viewing VMware Cloud Foundation instances on page 15 Use this procedure to iew the Cloud Foundation instances that you ordered and their detailed information. Backing up management components for VMware Cloud Foundation instances The VMware Cloud Foundation instance automatically backs up the management components daily. You can also make manual backups as you need. 2 Cloud Foundation instances 19

About this task The management serers that are backed up during the operation include the VMware Center Serer, the Platform Serices Controller (PSC), the NSX Manager, and the NSX Controller. The configurations on the ESXi serers are not backed up. You can make a manual backup before you make configuration changes to your VMware irtual enironment. An instance can hae a maximum of 14 backups. When the number of backups reaches the limit, the oldest backup is remoed to make space for the new backup. Procedure 1. Click Cloud Foundation Instances at the left side of the banner. 2. Click the instance to back up. 3. Click Backup and Restore from the left naigation. 4. Click Back up now to create a new backup. Results A record appears in the backup point list. To retriee the most recent status for a backup, click Refresh from the Status column. See the following list for the details of the backup statuses: In progress The backup job is initiated but not finished yet. You are not able to start another backup while this backup is in progress. Aailable The backup job is completed and ready for use. When a backup is aailable, you can select this backup to restore the management components to this backup image. Failed The backup job failed to complete. The console reports an error notification after a backup failure. Reiew the error notification and fix the reported issue before you attempt to back up again. Restoring management components for VMware Cloud Foundation instances When failures occur on your management components, you can restore the management components to a preious backup. Before you begin Make sure that the instance has at least one backup to restore from. About this task Note: A restoring process restores the management components from a backup image that you created before. Because the ESXi serer configurations are not backed up, you cannot fully recoer configurations that exist in both management components and ESXi serers. Procedure 1. Click Cloud Foundation Instances at the left side of the banner. 2. Click the instance to restore. 3. Click Backup and Restore from the left naigation. 4. Select a backup image to restore from by clicking a backup job entry in the backup section. 5. Click Restore to start the restore process of the management irtual machines. 20 IBM Cloud for VMware Solutions

Results When you start a job for restoring management components, you open a ticket to IBM Support. IBM Support works with you to complete the restoring job. You can click Refresh to track the restore progress. When the restore job completes, you recoer the management components to the backup image that you selected. Deleting VMware Cloud Foundation instances To release the components that you ordered in a Cloud Foundation instance, delete the instance. About this task When you delete a Cloud Foundation instance, the following components are released sequentially: 1. Upcharges 2. VMware product licenses 3. ESXi serers 4. Subnets 5. VLANs Because of resource dependencies, the components in your instance are not immediately released when you delete the instance. For example, the subnets and VLANs cannot be deleted until the ESXi serers are fully reclaimed by SoftLayer, which happens at the end of the SoftLayer billing cycle. At the end of the SoftLayer billing cycle, which is typically 30 days, the subnets and VLANs are deleted and the instance deletion is complete. Attention: You are billed until the end of the SoftLayer billing cycle for the deleted instance. Procedure 1. Click Cloud Foundation Instances at the left side of the banner. 2. Locate the instance to delete. 3. In the Actions column, click the delete icon. 2 Cloud Foundation instances 21

3 Managing VMware Center Serer instances VMware Center Serer on IBM Cloud proides the fundamental building blocks that include VMware Sphere and Center Serer needed to flexibly design a VMware solution that best fits your workloads. Using adanced automation, the single-node base offering is rapidly deployed and the entire VMware enironment is aailable to you in a matter of hours. Post-deployment, you can order and manually configure more components like attached Endurance or Performance storage, networking appliances, and additional VMware software to further build out the enironment based on your workload requirements. IBM Cloud Professional Serices and Managed Serices are also aailable to help you accelerate your journey to the cloud with offerings like migration, implementation, and onboarding serices. Center Serer oeriew The following graphic depicts the high-leel architecture of the Center Serer single-node base offering. Figure 2. Center Serer high-leel architecture for single-node base offering The architecture contains the following layers: Physical infrastructure This layer proides the physical compute, storage, and network resources to be used by the irtual infrastructure. Virtualization infrastructure This layer consists of VMware Sphere, which irtualizes the physical compute resources. Virtualization management This layer consists of Center Serer irtual appliance, Platform Serices Controller irtual appliance, and the IBM CloudDrier irtual machine.
