1 JEDDAH INFRASTRUCTURE SUMMIT 2014 MARCH 24, 2014, CROWNE PLAZA JEDDAH POST SHOW REPORT CONFERENCE OVERVIEW The Construction Week Jeddah Infrastructure Summit 2014 Conference saw 121 senior construction professionals and Government representatives gather at the Crowne Plaza in Jeddah. Michael Fahy, Editor of Construction Week, welcomed the audience and introduced the chairman, Hyder Consulting s Sameer Daoud, who ran through the key themes of the day - transport, clientcontractor relations, utilities infrastructure and energy efficiency. The keynote address was given by Eng. Abdullah Mohammed Al-Qarni, Vice Mayor of Projects, Jeddah Municipality. The first panel focused on analysing the current state of Jeddah's infrastructure. Adel Jemah, Vice President at Hill International, highlighted the importance of developing transport infrastructure whereas Mohammed Bajaba, Board Member of the Saudi Council of Engineers, spoke about the importance of developing utilities infrastructure and enhancing project execution strategies. The second panel of the day focused on building an integrated public transport system and how to link these projects to provide safe, convenient and affordable transport services for Jeddah s population. Terry Smith, Senior Vice President, Arcanico; Paul Sparrow, Associate Business Director at Hyder Consulting, and Graeme Bampton, Regional Director of Rail at Faithful+Gould, discussed how integration is the key to any public transport system to ensure that they are properly used. The panel also touched on the real estate opportunities around transport infrastructure hubs. Next followed a project update presentation by Michael Chihoski, Chief Operating Officer at Emaar Economic City, the developer of King Abdullah Economic City. Chihoski highlighted the progression of this US$34billion mega project with the implementation of a new master plan with four, five-year phases focusing on the development of its port and industrial valley, the Bayt La Sun mixed-use district and a new gateway site to the city by the new Haramain High-Speed Rail station. The programme then moved on to how to develop Jeddah s utilities infrastructure. The panellists included Saleh M. Saadawi, Program Director, Western Region Strategic Reservoirs Program at the National Water Company; Akram Omar, Director of Development at EMAAR Middle East, and Khaled Jame, Utilities Director at Hyder Consulting. Saadawi spoke about the improvement in water and wastewater infrastructure in Jeddah, noting that water mains now cover 85% of Jeddah and the amount of sewerage mains has jumped from just 22% up to 70% across the city. He also disclosed the implementation of the NWC master plan running through to 2035 for improving utilities and is working with consultants to review the plan every five years to ensure fulfilment of the latest needs of the city.

2 The next panel discussion focussed on importance of effective communication between project owners, designers and contractors and how to enhance project management and execution strategies. Dr Hadi H. Kobeissy, General Manager at Medad Project Management; Talal Samarkandi, CEO of Architectural Lines; Martin Weallans, Country Director KSA at Faithful+ Gould, and Terry Smith, Senior Vice President at Arcanico, emphasised how all four components client, engineers, PMCs and contractors have to be on the same page, the importance of building information modelling or infrastructure modelling software, and how there must be an integrated project management delivery system between the parties. The last panel session of the day featured a session on incorporating energy efficiency standards in new buildings. Peter Pardoe, Property Director of Hyder Consulting, argued it was time for Saudi Arabia to catch up with practices in other parts of the world when it came to adopting green building standards. Hicham Hassouni, Senior Development Manager at Accor Middle East, emphasised how small changes like managing lighting and water use, or replacing inefficient lighting with LED lights, which consume less power, can improve sustainability of existing buildings. The impressive line-up of 16 speakers and panellists came from all over the Kingdom to share their knowledge and experience. There was great interaction from the audience throughout the day and the conference ended with a positive feeling about the numerous mega projects that are underway to transform the city. 5 RECOMMENDATIONS This conference has established itself as a valued cross-disciplinary forum for the construction industry in Jeddah. A key recommendation from delegates was to encourage the participation of specific government officials in focussed panels like utilities, transport, energy efficiency, etc. so the audience can get a better picture of their plans and how they link together. More time for questions and answers should also be built into the programme, as the input of delegates who are also tasked with developing a lot of the projects being discussed is important to provide more detail.
