5 The ICANN Organization A global organization, led by the CEO with staff members in 40 countries, the ICANN organization focuses staff & resources on: policy development support, event management, registrars & registries support, Community support, contract compliance, IANA functions, outreach and capacity building, external services for the broader community (L-Root, WHOIS, etc.), & internal staff services. WHO? Community The ICANN organization implements the Community s recommendations at the direction of the Board, under the supervision of the CEO, within ICANN s mission and scope. WHAT? 7 ICANN s Mission 1 The mission of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is to ensure the stable and secure operation of the Internet s unique identifier systems Coordinates the allocation and assignment of names in the root zone of the Domain Name System Specifically, ICANN: 2 Coordinates the development and implementation of policies concerning the registration of second-level domain names in generic top-level domains (gtlds) 3 Facilitates the coordination of the operation and evolution of the DNS root name server system 4 Coordinates the allocation and assignment at the top-most level of Internet Protocol numbers and Autonomous System numbers 5 Collaborates with other bodies as appropriate to provide registries needed for the functioning of the Internet as specified by Internet protocol standards development organizations 7

10 The Digital Universe is Growing Exponentially According to IDC, the digital universe is doubling in size every two years, and by 2020, the digital universe the data we create and copy annually will reach 44 zettabytes, or 44 trillion gigabytes. If the Digital Universe were represented by the memory in a stack of tablets, in 2013 it would have stretched two-thirds the way to the Moon*. 16 What is the New gtld Program? The goal of the New gtld Program is to foster competition, innovation and choice in the domain name industry. Competition Innovation Choice This is an Internet community-driven initiative that is enabling the largest expansion of the domain name system, ever. The New gtld Program is managed by ICANN, which means it has taken shape through the multistakeholder model. Over 1,200 new generic top-level domains have now been introduced into the Internet over the next few years. 16

20 What are IDNs? An Internationalized Domain Name (IDN) uses a particular encoding and format to allow a wider range of scripts to represent domain names. Until late 2009, Top-Level Domains were restricted to only the Latin letters a to z without accents or symbols. After 2009, IDN TLDs were introduced in other scripts including Arabic, Chinese and Cyrillic scripts. IDN TLDs can be either cctlds or gtlds. Internationalized Domain Names Domain names with non-latin characters or Latin characters beyond letters (a to z) digits (0 to 9) and hyphen (-), as allowed by relevant protocols. 20

28 Why is ICANN Rolling the KSK? As with passwords, the cryptographic keys used in DNSSEC-signing DNS data should be changed periodically o Ensures infrastructure can support key change in case of emergency This type of change has never before occurred at the root level o There has been one functional, operational Root Zone DNSSEC KSK since 2010 The KSK rollover must be widely and carefully coordinated to ensure that it does not interfere with normal operations 28

29 KSK Rollover: An Overview ICANN is in the process of performing a Root Zone DNS Security Extensions (DNSSEC) Key Signing Key (KSK) rollover The Root Zone DNSSEC Key Signing Key KSK is the top most cryptographic key in the DNSSEC hierarchy The KSK is a cryptographic public-private key pair: o o Public part: trusted starting point for DNSSEC validation Private part: signs the Zone Signing Key (ZSK) Builds a chain of trust of successive keys and signatures to validate the authenticity of any DNSSEC signed data Watch video: ch?v=d7h1akc9piw DATA 29

31 When Does the Rollover Take Place? The changing or "rolling" of the KSK Key was originally scheduled to occur on 11 October 2017 Recently obtained data showed that a significant number of resolvers used by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and Network Operators were not yet ready for the Key Rollover. ICANN is tentatively hoping to reschedule the Key Rollover for the first quarter of

34 About the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) European Union s (EU s) GDPR aims to protect EU citizens and residents from privacy and data breaches (takes effect on 25 May 2018) The Regulation is an essential step to strengthen citizens' fundamental rights in the digital age and facilitate business by simplifying rules for companies in the Digital Single Market. Applies to all companies processing and holding the personal data of subjects residing in the EU, regardless of the company s location Failure to comply may result in fines up to 20 million or 4% of global annual turnover European Data Protection Authorities will interpret and enforce the regulation, and European courts will resolve any disputes More information: 34

35 What is WHOIS WHOIS is a publicly available directory containing information about registered domains such as icann.org, including contact information for the registrant or registrar. Accurate WHOIS Data is important because it: Ensures domain name holders receive renewal notices and important updates. Reduces the chance of fraud such as an unauthorized transfer or change. Protects your domain name against suspension or deletion, which can happen if information is inaccurate or missing 35

36 ICANN: Preparing for the GDPR The GDPR is expected to effect ICANN in at least 2 areas: 1) Contracted Parties: Personal data that participants in the domain name ecosystem collect, display, and process, including registries and registrars pursuant to ICANN contracts 2) Internal: Personal data that ICANN collects, processes for internal/external services Closely monitoring global data protection/privacy developments.
