2 MODBus COMMUNICATION FOR BMS INTEGRATION REHAU continually invests in innovative solutions for the building industry, including renewable energy products, underfloor heating/ cooling (UFH/C), pipes and plumbing, windows, doors and a full range of cable management products. One of REHAU s developments is the enhanced REHAU Intelligent Control System for underfloor heating and cooling. Having already been successful in the market, REHAU has taken it a step further and improved its sophisticated control system by offering a wireless option, radiator and domestic hot water control and a cooling function to optimise individual comfort. The latest development brings BMS compatability. REHAU Intelligent Controls now feature a built in MODBus communication network. This enables easy connection into most major Building Management Systems.

System parameters such as room temperature, outside air temperature, flow temperatures and even humidity values can be read remotely from all sensors connected to the system. A FC-BMS administrator can now adjust setpoints to increase or decrease temperatures and have full control of actuators and valves throughout the UFH/C system. Optimise your running costs When monitoring UFH/C systems via the FC-BMS, operators can view and control temperatures in each room, and can even optimise flow temperatures to and from the UFH/C system so they are able to ensure optimal performance of their heat source, be it boiler, chiller, heat pump, biomass or other. For example, where lower heat requirements are called for by the UFH/C system, with the use of REHAU FC-BMS,for the first time it is possible for the FC-BMS system to see what temperature water is needed and, use this information to set boiler and mixing temperatures for optimal performance. Customised systems and fast fault finding checks We have made it possible for FC-BMS operators to adjust the control parameters of our UFH/C system should that be necessary. They are also able to override settings during normal operation which allows for remote fault finding. For example if it is not clear why a room is not achieving temperature, actuators and valves can be manually controlled to establish where the root of the problem lies. Remote technical support REHAU FC-BMS has the availability of TCP/IP connectivity allowing for the first time diagnostic checks to be carried out on the UFH/C system via the internet. All of this reduces the running costs of the system and reduces the CO 2 footprint of the building.

As the UFH/C system can be fully read and controlled via the FC-BMS, individual BMS sensors are no longer required for temperature monitoring/ control throughout the building, bringing a reduction in the total number of sensors that need to be installed and maintained. This means that other HVAC systems can be operated by the BMS utilising REHAU Intelligent Control sensors, without the need for BMS or HVAC specific sensors. Simplified wiring reduces installation time The installation is also simpler and cheaper as REHAU sensors run on a BUS loop (daisy chain) system. This reduces the cost and installation time when compared to wiring a BMS sensor where each sensor is wired directly to the BMS controller. Wireless Controls For hard to reach places, or where design changes occur late, the REHAU Wireless Controls, running on 868 MHz can eliminate the need for wiring completely. This is especially helpful for buildings of special or historic interest, or where changes in building use occur during the life of the building. Wireless Controls allow you to future proof your control system. Where required, wired and wireless sensors can be used together in one system while offering greater flexibility.
