2 INTRODUCTION This document explains the advantages of peering at MIX. The intended audience is network operator peering coordinators that have been referred to MIX by friendly IXPs, which are linked together in a cross-promotion initiative. Information contained is current as of February THE ESSENCE OF MIX MIX is a member owned organization and gains its value from the large and diverse range of network operators that chose to peer here. This guide is presented for the use of prospective new members, as a concise summary of all the information you might need. We hope this proves useful in explaining the benefits of joining MIX, leading to a larger membership base for the good of all. INFORMATION FOR PROSPECTIVE MIX MEMBERS Q: WHAT DO YOU NEED IN ORDER TO JOIN MIX? The requirements to join MIX are given in the Memorandum of Understanding that all members must sign when they join: Candidates for membership shall be a recognized legal entity; Candidates for membership shall have a public ASN (Autonomous System Number) and use BGP4 for peerings; Candidates should operate mainly as an Internet Access/Transit Provider and/or as a Hosting Provider or a licensed digital Content Owner and Distributor. The Autonomous System which the candidate is presenting to MIX must have a connection to the Internet totally independent from MIX. In case the candidate is applying to MIX as an Access/Transit provider or as an Hosting provider, they must also be affiliated as a LIR to RIPE or other equivalent RIR.

3 Q: WHY SHOULD I PEER? Many networks have not realized the benefits that peering can bring to their organization. These include: Greater control of your network traffic; Greater resiliente; Reduced transit commitment and cost; Lower latency; Networking and knowledge sharing with others in the industry. Q: WHAT CAN MIX DO FOR YOU? MIX exists to provide efficient interconnection for its members and to represent their views on matters of pubic interest. It offers: Dual peering LAN for resilient connections; Peering ports from 10 Mbps to multiple 10GE aggregated connections; Private Interconnect service for large traffic flows; Involvement - regular MIX meetings for members; Independence - MIX is run on a non-profit basis; Co-location in a truly neutral Data Center dedicated to members telecommunication equipment hosting fully owned, managed and operated by MIX. Q: WHAT DOES MIX MEMBERSHIP COST? All members, regardless of size, pay an annual membership fee of 850,00. MIX adopts a per port base fee scheme which has the following peculiarities: the monthly fee is calculated on the ports type/speed used by the MIX members and chosen among the available ones: 10/100 Mbps, 1 Gbps and 10 Gbps; for each one of the previous ports typologies, MIX has defined a fee related to the first port and a reduced fee for extra-ports of the same type;

4 futhermore MIX has defined some fractional values (in the table below defined as Fraction ) with a lower speed and a preferential tariff. For a detailed view please refer to Furthermore, MIX gives each member the chance to install its own peering equipment into MIX premises: up to one third of rack 19 is free of charge as well as the connection to the MIX switches. Rack space (19 : 600x600, 600x800, 800x other types under specific evaluation): First rack: 1/3 rack: free-of-charge; 2/3 rack: 217 /month; 3/3 rack: 492 /month; Other racks: 1/3 rack: 153 /month; 2/3 rack: 370 /month; 3/3 rack: 645 /month. Carriers can install their termination equipment at MIX, to facilitate new members connection. These services are managed through different contracts between MIX and the carrier: please refer to our Support Team for further information.

5 Q: WHERE IS MIX? A: MIX is located in the Caldera Business Campus,Via Caldera 21, Milan Italy in its own datacenter. The MIX datacenter is recognized to be one of the most well equipped co-location area in Milan, supplying a completely doubled electrical plant, quadruple UPS system, differentiated pipes for electrical, copper and fiber circuits, air conditioning and anti-intrusion detection systems. The same Campus features the highest density of Telecommunication facilities in Italy, and includes the MIX datacenter as well as several operators datacenters and network Points of Presence. Our Support Team will be glad to help you in identifying the solution that best suits your needs. In addition to this members may also connect via Layer 2 transport services. This allows members that are not already present in Milan to enjoy peering with the MIX membership maintaining their equipment remotely. CURRENT MIX STATISTICS There are several methods used to show the size of Internet Exchange Points around the world. These are some quick statistics for MIX: over 80 members; over 130 connected member ports; over 54 Gb/sec of peak traffic on the public Exchange. Of course, any one of these data cannot give the complete picture of the Internet Exchange nor illustrate the excellent engineering community which is fostered at MIX.
