5 Aerospace Metro Denver is ranked second among the 50 largest U.S. metropolitan areas, with over 36,000 employed in the industry. Aerospace companies in the region have played crucial roles in many of the nation s space contracts, and the newly designated Front Range Space Port near DIA will be home to a host of innovative public and private space missions. Other important infrastructure elements include Colorado s universities and geographic proximity to several prominent military bases. 6 Aviation Centennial Airport was the 9 th busiest general aviation airport in 2009, and is a major economic engine for Arapahoe and northern Douglas County. It is home to charter flight companies, aircraft sales, flight training and simulation, general avionics and other companies, including the corporate headquarters of Air Methods, one of the largest air ambulance companies in America, with over 300 locations in 48 states. Recently, it became a hub for Iceland Air, extending its reach to a variety of European locations.

7 Bioscience There are 670 bioscience establishments in the Denver Metro area, and the University Hospital at Anschutz Medical Center spins off an additional 10 bioscience firms per year. The Anschutz Campus is a catalyst for economic growth in the region. The University of Colorado estimates that it is presently responsible for 17,000 job in the region. Though broadband was hit especially hard in the so-called dot-com bust in 2001 and 2002, the industry has come back more productive than ever using advanced technology. Arapahoe and Douglas counties are a regional hub for broadcast and telecommunication sectors, which have been consolidated into broadband for this profile. Together, the two counties have over 50% of the Denver Metro area s broadband employment, with over 14,350 jobs in 192 establishments.

9 Finance & Insurance Arapahoe and Douglas counties are a regional hub for the finance and insurance industry. The Metro Denver area is known as the Wall Street of the West, and ranks fourth in sector employment among America s 50 largest metropolitan areas. Together, Arapahoe and Douglas counties have over 48% of Metro Denver s employment in the finance and insurance industry with over 66,500 people working in 2,333 establishments. Over 19,000 persons are employed in the two zip codes closest to the Centennial Arapahoe/ Douglas Works! office. Since employment in healthcare is tied more closely to population demographics than economic conditions, it grew at an annual rate of 3.3% between 2001 and In the Denver Metro area, healthcare is most concentrated in areas that house large hospitals. The Anschutz Campus employs nearly 6,000 health care workers, and Denver Health Authority over 3,500. In conjunction with the southeast light rail extension, the proposed expansion of Sky Ridge Medical Center and Kaiser Permanente will add hundreds of healthcare jobs in Lone Tree.

11 Information Technology Not only is information technology an industry in its own right, it is an enabling platform that crosses virtually all other industries. Computer sciences professionals can work in the IT industry itself, or can ply their trades in finance, healthcare, aerospace, biosciences, aviation and broadband. Since IT is ubiquitous across all key industry groups in the Arapahoe/Douglas region, we can expect much faster than average growth in computer sciences occupations.
