5 Introduction Key Highlights of NKN NKN is a state-of-the-art multi-gigabit pan-india network for providing a unified high speed network backbone for all knowledge related institutions in the country An idea from Office of Principal Scientific Advisor, Government of India (GoI) National Informatics Centre (NIC) designated as Project Execution Agency GoI approved budget of INR 5990 Crore (USD 1 billion) for NKN in March, 2010 Allocation of INR 48 Crore (USD 7.7 million) for implementation of Pilot phase of NKN Will connect Research & Development, educational, health, and agricultural institutes institutes to be connected; connectivity has been extended to 1330 institutes 9 th April 2009: Hon ble President of India, Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil inaugurated NKN Project. 18 NKN Connectivity & TEIN4 The figure shows the network expanse of TEIN and connec8vity with other networks around the World. Barring the excep8on of Maldives, the SAARC na8ons comprising Afghanistan (yet to start but have signed the MoU, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka are members of TEIN network. Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Sri Lanka connect to TEIN via NKN at Mumbai (Belapur) while Pakistan connects to TEIN via Singapore. The Internal Research Educa8on Network of each one of the country is like BdREN in Bangladesh, DrukREN in Bhutan, NREN in Nepal, PERN2 in Pakistan, AfgREN in Afghanistan, and NKN in India, LEARN in Sri Lanka, Maldives (REN does not seem to exist). 19 NKN & Internet2 To enhance: Research and Innovation Education Agriculture Public Health Fine Arts and Culture Business Free and Open Internet (NKN) and Internet2 signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 29 th April 2015 that will create a robust collaboration program between the two national research and education (R&E) networks. The NKN-Internet2 partnership will provide a better platform for collaborative work. The Internet2/NKN partnership will be based on a working group structure composed of NKN collaborators and Internet2 members Centered on the core cooperation themes of education, personalized medicine, and harmonization of research and education network infrastructure.
