4 Past and Current Use Cases for WDFW WDFW began using AWS in 2012 for the following: Scientific Computing Glacier Backups Test / Dev Production ArcGIS map services environments (primary use case example for this discussion) INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SERVICES 4

9 Challenges and gotchas to watch out for: Data downloads Free to upload and store but download rates add up if you re not careful 700GB download test from Glacier = $1,200 charge Expect failure (back up!) Patch applied to Hypervisors caused virtual Nic issue on all 2012R2 M class instance types to fail after Windows updates applied in summer of Isolated environments requires separate solutions for managing security, update management, backups, etc Bring your own licenses Leverage Microsoft Volume licenses to save money (SQL) INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SERVICES 9

11 Background The UTC has been hosting servers in the WaTech virtual environment for approximately 5 years. We currently have about 25 servers depending on the day you count them. We were one of the three pilot agencies for the Private Cloud service. We chose WaTech hosting because we felt our servers were safer there than in our computer room and agencies were being encouraged to use shared services. Almost all of our production servers are now hosted in the WaTech Private Cloud. Only legacy and a couple of utility servers remain onpremises. We use a variety of other WaTech services in addition to the Private Cloud to access, secure and back up our servers.

13 Benefits Using those WaTech services, we can now provision our own servers and set the firewall rules needed to access them without involvement from WaTech. We can quickly spin up servers in our dedicated resource pool, or in the pay-as-you go pool (for dev/r&d workloads). We are able to easily adjust CPU, RAM and disk resources. We can join our servers to our Enterprise Active Directory domain and access them using our existing accounts. The OCIO security standards apply in the same way as for our onpremises servers. No more hardware issues!

14 Challenges IT took a while for our management to adjust to the monthly cost model as opposed to buying server hardware up front. Troubleshooting problems is more difficult because virtualization abstracts the underlying infrastructure. We often have to collaborate with WaTech on identifying the cause. Less visibility into the environment (virtual hosts, SAN and network).
