She will discuss the National Policy Framework for Land Transport Technology. This Policy Framework outlines a principlesbased approach to facilitate the efficient, effective and consistent implementation and uptake of transport technology across Australia. 9.45am - The Renaissance of Rail and What This Means for Rail Telecommunications and Technology Jose-Luis Arana, Thales Jose-Luis Arana is Thales global lead for rail integrated communication and supervisory business. Jose-Luis, who is based overseas and currently in Australia, will discuss trends and innovations in rail telecommunications and technology with a focus on integrated rail communications and train control.
2 10.15am - The Smart Transport for Australia Report and its implications for freight and passenger rail in Australia Susan Harris, CEO, ITS Australia Susan Harris is CEO of Intelligent Transport Systems Australia. ITS Australia promotes the development and deployment of advanced technologies to deliver safer, more efficient and environmentally sustainable transport across all public and private modes. Susan will discuss the ITS Australia Smart Transport for Australia report which outlines 43 specific opportunities for intelligent transport in Australia am MORNING TEA P r e p a r i n g f o r t h e F u t u r e A h e a d 11.15am - Is shared data the key to improving productivity? Michelle Hendy, National Transport Commission Michelle Hendy is the NTC s Chief Planning Officer and is responsible for leading the NTC s Strategy, Monitoring and Review functions. She will discuss examples of shared data and the improvements this can lead to in transport. Issues to consider in shared data include privacy, data protection and security, ownership of data, and commercial/public benefits am - Transforming Future Transport for our Customers with technology Jacinta Hargan, Transport for NSW Jacinta Hargan is the Director of the Future Transport Program in Transport for NSW. The Future Transport Program aims to set out a vision for a technology-enabled transport future. Jacinta will provide a broad provide an overview of the Future Transport Strategy and focus on the Technology program she is directing as part of Future Transport pm - Towards the Development of a Smart Rail Route Map Ken Mahon, Deakin University Ken Mahon is Senior Commercial Manager at Deakin University and a key contributor to the Smart Rail Route Map, which was an initiative of the 2016 TTF. Ken will discuss the development of an industry route map for the rail industry s digital future and look at where we want to be as an industry, and how we establish a common view of priorities, themes, timelines, and actions pm LUNCH
3 T a k i n g R a i l i n t o t h e F u t u r e T h r o u g h R e s e a r c h 1.30pm Supporting transport and mobility technology through research Ian Christensen, IMOVE Australia. Ian Christensen is the Managing Director of newly formed company IMOVE Australia that will host the imove Co-operative Research Centre. The imove CRC is an initiative to support organisations in the transport and mobility sector to take advantage of the digital revolution to develop new technologies. Ian will discuss the activities of the new CRC, the importance of value creation in their selection and the role that the rail sector will play. 2.00pm - Modern Communication Technology to Improve Safety and Enhance Commuter Experience in Railway Networks Dr Paul Reichl, Institute of Railway Technology and Salar Tavakoli, Engineering Manager, MTM Dr Paul Reichl is the Senior Research Engineer and Data Scientist and Institute of Railway Technology at Monash University. Salar Tavakoli is Engineering Manager Melbourne Trains Metro. This joint presentation will look at a recent research project which monitored in real time the number of commuters and their behaviours at railway stations. They will discuss the capabilities of this technology and the details of the key findings relating to patronage within a metropolitan railway station. 2.30pm - UTS Transport Research Centre Dr Michelle Zeibots, University of Technology Sydney Dr Michelle Zeibots is Research Director at the UTS Transport Research Centre and is a lead researcher of the Responsive Passenger Information System program at UTS that incorporates collaborative projects with several rail manufacturers and service providers in Australia. Her presentation will take us inside the Responsive Passenger Information Systems technology that incorporates customer movements, decisions and preferences into rail operating systems. 3.00pm ATERNOON TEA (including visits to the UTS Data Arena)
4 I n f o r m a t i o n, T e c h n o l o g y a n d T e l e c o m m u n i c a t i o n s 3.30pm Introducing Artificial Intelligence in Rail Operations Mark Wood, 4Tel Mark Wood is General Manager of Communications and Electronics at 4Tel. Mark has been employed in the Communications, Control Systems, Electronics and Software disciplines within the defence and transport industries for over 20 years and has been involved in many significant projects for ARTC, TfNSW, John Holland, VicTrack and V/Line. The presentation will outline what artificial intelligence is and specifically focus on computer vision processing component of artificial intelligence. 4.00pm - Using technical solutions to improve the performance, efficiency and safety of rail operations Bruno Lambla, TTG Bruno Lambla is TTG s Product Manager with 15 years experience in IT and Engineering and with a background in designing and engineering large systems, managing development and leading technical teams. Bruno is in charge of TTG s product roadmap and will discuss improving the performance, efficiency and safety of rail operations. 4.30pm - Rail Telecommunications, Now and Into the Future Ron Au, ARUP Ron Au is a Senior Communications Engineer at Arup and has 10 years experience in the rail industry with focus on communications and systems. Bonnie Ryan, GS1 Australia MORNING TEA C o m p o n e n t s o f t h e R a i l N e t w o r k Bonnie Ryan is Senior Manager - Trade, Transport & Heavy Industry with GS1 Australia which is the leading provider of standards and solutions for over 20 industry sectors. Bonnie will discuss an ARA and GS1 project to adopt GS1 open global standards for identifying and marking (barcoding and/or tagging) components used across the Australian Rail Industry. This project will standardise the way materials are identified and lead to significant efficiency and safety benefits for the industry am - Network Investment - Paul Harris, Public Transport Victoria Paul Harris is the Principal Engineer for Operational Control Systems at Public Transport Victoria and has over thirty-five years of experience in telecommunications and technology design, implementation and strategy. Paul will discuss the considerations and challenges of investing in telecommunications and technology networks.
6 11.30pm Queensland Rail ETCS project - Ian McColl, Queensland Rail Ian is the Discipline Head of Telecommunications at Queensland Rail. In Queensland Rail, Ian has worked mainly in telecommunications but has also had roles in civil, electrical and signalling. Ian will present on ETCS in Queensland Rail, and look at the project s origins, benefits and next steps. T a k i n g R a i l i n t o t h e F u t u r e T h r o u g h R e s e a r c h 12.00pm - Developing new technologies and knowledge through research Stuart Thomson, Rail Manufacturing CRC Dr Stuart Thomson is CEO of the Rail Manufacturing CRC. Stuart was appointed CEO in April 2015 and before that he held roles in technical research and development positions in manufacturing, senior leadership positions at CRCMining, and working as Executive Director of a statutory R&D funding agency. Stuart will provide an overview of the Rail Manufacturing CRC and his role in directing collaborative research and commercialisation partnerships in rail manufacturing Lunch C y b e r S e c u r i t y 1.15pm - Providing advice and support on cyber threats and vulnerabilities - Kenneth Radke, Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT), Attorney Generals Department Dr Kenneth Radke is the control systems lead in technical operations at CERT Australia where he provides advice to various critical infrastructure organisations, and creates opportunities for industry partners to exchange information about cyber incidents with each other. Kenneth will discuss current vulnerabilities seen in industry Australia-wide with a specific focus on the transport sector and on operational technology environments. He will also discuss recent ransomware attacks, how they played out and lessons learnt. 1.45pm - Siemens approach to cyber-security - Luke Wildman, Siemens Dr Luke Wildman is the Systems Assurance Manager at Siemens Mobility Australia. Luke will discuss the increasing use of technology such as open networks and third-party products within signalling systems and their potential for posing security threats. He will also discuss the cyber security focus for Siemens is to support the security of signalling systems continuously throughout the system life cycle by means of a comprehensive partnership with the customer. 2.15pm - Afternoon tea
7 C o m p o n e n t s o f t h e R a i l N e t w o r k c o n t d. 2.45pm - Evolution, trends and standardization of future Railway mobile communication systems Raymond Tan, Nokia Based out of Singapore, Raymond Tan is the Business Development Director for Nokia s Global Enterprise & Public Sector and specifically looks after the Transportation industry which includes Railway, Roads & Highways, Aviation and Maritime. In this session Nokia will share experiences from several Proof-of- Concepts and trials done globally, the state of standardization of a future railway mobile communication system and how it will evolve. 3.15pm - Beyond Voice - Developments in 4G, 4.5G, 5G - Jason Leung, Huawei Jason Leung is the Transportation Lead for Huawei s Enterprise Business Group Australia. He has more than 23 years of experience in the Telecommunications sector working in various engineering, management, business development and sales roles across a diverse number of carrier and enterprise industries. His presentation will reference safety and mission critical requirements of the underlying wireless communications network and look beyond the voice application, while exploring benefits to the rail industry of adopting the cellular data evolution path. 3.45pm Only as good as your weakest link: The importance of configuration data in railway technology systems - John Towers, Layer2 Intelligence. C o n c l u s i o n John Towers is a Director of Layer 2 Intelligence, a technology consulting company providing turn-key, integration and project management services to the rail and infrastructure industries throughout NSW and Australia. Through the use of case studies, John will look at the benefits of centralised and standardised configuration data and the aspirations here in Australia to support the introduction of technologies such as Traffic Management Systems and the benefit of sharing configuration data across the interface of above and below rail operations. 4.15pm - Conclusion and the way ahead 4.30 Forum Closes
