4 4 The Foundation, EIMA On October 27, 2011, the Illinois General Assembly enacted the Energy Infrastructure Modernization Act (EIMA), setting in motion a $2.6 billion investment by ComEd to strengthen and modernize the state s electric grid. The Investment Plan has two primary components: Reliability-Related Investments 5 year program, $1.3B Underground cable mainline, URD, manholes Ridgeland 69kV cable replacement Training centers Wood pole inspection, reinforcement/replacement Storm hardening undergrounding, spacer cable Smart Grid-Related Investments 10 year program, $1.3B Distribution Automation Smart Substations Smart Meters The legislation also established: Energy Foundry Test Bed
5 5 Social Network Online dashboard that proactively senses infrastructure (e.g. lights, bridges, pipes, etc.) Specialized energy (e.g. EE) programs designed for municipal buildings Leveraging the 3 Networks Digital Network Mesh network for remote control of infrastructure Analytics to garner insights from electricity and non-electricity data (e.g. water, traffic, gunshots, fires, escalating crowds) Provide WiFi from utility infrastructure Physical Network Smart streetlights Non-AMI (e.g. water meters) Emergency power (e.g. storage, CHP, fuel cells) Microgrid ComEd is uniquely positioned to drive the kind of future we look to create in Bronzeville by leveraging the full power of our modernized smart grid. Online dashboard to remotely manage equipment Premium power programs for large C&I customers Concierge/strategic energy adviser with industry expertise BTM marketplace for access to energy products and services DR, EE and specialized rate programs Analytics platform for identifying high potential customers Implement two-way communications to provide an additional level of control over large loads, connect to smart meter Analytics to optimize home energy management and personalized products/services suggestions Storage for reliability/power quality Flexible battery storage On-site generation Remote DER control (pair sensor and network devices w/ DERs and T&D equipment Electric vehicle charging Electrified public transportation Behind the meter DERs Smart meters, thermostats and appliances We plan to leverage the power of our three networks physical, digital and social together to deliver great value for customers in a very visible way in the Community of the Future.
6 6 The Community of the Future A Community of the Future is a place where ComEd and a local community collaborate to create a smart community connected, custom, livable, and, sustainable in which the smart grid and a host of other technologies and related services are fully leveraged to enhance the everyday lives of community members We envision a community where the energy system and the many uses of its digital network is localized and human-centered, with power that is ultra-reliable and can be generated and controlled at the community level. Where residents and businesses have more options and control, can reduce their environmental footprint, and can benefit from new products and services The Community of the Future promotes piloting customer-focused initiatives that: Create a smarter, more secure, more reliable, more resilient and affordable grid by protecting and reducing outage duration for critical infrastructure in the event of catastrophic incidents. Connect residents to smarter technology that enable them to make an impact on their energy usage, cost, and footprint. Enhance livability, workability and sustainability.
7 7 Bronzeville - The Community of the Future Bronzeville, a South Side community in the City of Chicago was chosen as an ideal pilot location for ComEd to leverage the existing AMI network to shape the Community of the Future. The developing community with a rich legacy of history, creativity and diversity was Chicago s South Side neighborhood of diverse culture and businesses from the 1920s through the 1950s Bronzeville is a hub for schools that drive innovation, businesses that drive progress, engaged community members, and intelligent community leaders that have transformed the community. 100 thousand residents and an approximate area of 2.40 square miles. 21,200 utility customers with 92% residential, and 8% Commercial & Industrial customers % of the residents in Bronzeville are renters, with the remaining 29.17% being home owners.
8 8 The Community of the Future- The Plan Characteristics Process o o o The energy system and the potential communication, transportation, and other uses of its digital network is localized and human-centered, designed to be understood and interacted with by community members Power is resilient and reliable, able to be generated and controlled at the community level; and Residents and businesses: Are connected to each other in new ways, Have more options and control over their energy usage, Can reduce their environmental footprint, and Find value from new products and services, including new ways to: Save money and find comfort, Go places, See improvements in their community, and Benefit from investment in their future This is a vision and a gradual reality which ComEd co-creates with a community, beginning in Bronzeville, by: o Facilitating a collaborative process; o Bringing to bear the many tools and technologies that a smart grid can offer and working with the community to assess, select, and arrange those tools in a way that works for them; and o Offering expertise to help move forward technology-and energy-related initiatives already sought or underway in the community.
9 9 Why Bronzeville? ComEd already deployed smart meters, and smart switches within Bronzeville. Representative cross-section of different customers within the City. Diverse mixture of load profiles. Home to critical infrastructure. Introduces an opportunity to cluster the proposed microgrid with an existing privately owned microgrid at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). Existing 12 MW microgrid at the Illinois Institute of Technology.

11 11 Bronzeville Grid Resiliency A Bronzeville Grid Resiliency program which consists of a microgrid, a microgrid controller, and an energy storage & solar project to strengthen grid resilience, help mitigate grid disturbances, and diversify energy resources. This project utilizes microgrid technology to support the physical network for the Bronzeville community and to achieve the following goals: Operate a stand-alone Microgrid in Bronzeville Showcase the Microgrid Controller Community outreach to educate the public on benefits of Microgrid technology
12 12 Bronzeville Microgrid ComEd Future Energy Plan enables ComEd to invest $300 million over 5 years in 6 microgrids serving critical public infrastructure The Bronzeville Community Microgrid (BCM) Demonstration Project is seeking to design, construct, and operate an utility-owned microgrid serving critical customers based on a microgrid-enabled distribution backbone and local-scale DER.
13 13 Microgrid Controller ComEd received a $1.2 million grant from the Department of Energy to build a master controller that could drive the operations of clusters of microgrids. The controller will facilitate the development and the deployment of community microgrids for enhancing reliability, sustainability, and economic values. The Project is performed by ComEd in collaboration with technology developers (Illinois Institute of Technology, University of Denver, Argonne National Laboratory, Quanta Technology) and technology solution providers (Alstom Grid, S&C Electric, OSIsoft).
14 14 Electric Vehicle Charging Stations The key objective is for ComEd to take a role in jumpstarting the EV market in Illinois while contributing to lowering Green House Gas emissions. Market education and outreach for EV adoption would be a primary focus with the key stakeholders being our customers, community organizations and the City.
15 15 Microgrid-Integrated Solar-Storage Technology ComEd received a $4 million DOE Grant proposing technology, referred to as the SHINES Microgrid-Integrated Solar-Storage Technology (MISST) to address availability and variability issues inherent in the solar photovoltaic (PV) technology by utilizing smart inverters for solar PV/battery storage and working synergistically with other components within a Microgrid community. The proposed SHINES project will deploy high-power solar PV and a high-power Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in the Bronzeville Community Microgrid (BCM). This award will enable the most sophisticated solar project in the Midwest, while also helping ComEd and the communities it serves learn more about the important technologies that will make for a more secure and green energy future.
16 16 CSMART at IIT The Center for SmartGrid Applications, Research and Technology at IIT is a lab dedicated to the latest smart grid technology innovation in a real-world environment. In partnership with other CSMART members, ComEd is working on 3 pilots CSMART Test Bed, CSMART Streetlights, and CSMART AMI Water.
17 17 Energy Efficiency Outreach Campaign Energy Efficiency Services will conduct strategic outreach and marketing of the ComEd Smart Ideas Energy Efficiency Program within the Bronzeville community. Energy efficiency is seen as a cost-effective way for Bronzeville residents and businesses to reduce their utility costs and contribute less to greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to climate change.
18 18 Demand Response Demand Response will conduct strategic outreach and marketing of DR Programs within the Bronzeville community. DR Programs are seen as a cost-effective way for Bronzeville residents and businesses to reduce their utility costs and contribute less to greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to climate change. Providing the community with resources such as education, assessments and incentives for demand response will contribute to the Bronzeville community s financial and environmental sustainability.
19 19 Low Income Strategy Recognizing the diverse population and needs in Bronzeville, we are working with community alliances, local businesses, and residents to understand and address current and future community needs. We are focusing on helping residents save time and money and improving the community, ensuring the community has a voice and participate in technologies and initiatives that influence their everyday activities.
20 20 Community Engagement The community engagement efforts at ComEd aim to: Convene a collaborative engagement with local community leaders, businesses and government partners to co-create a Community of the Future where energy systems are localized and human centered Leverage the many uses of energy digital network including resilient power, renewable energy, energy use controls and smart services to bring value to local residents in their homes & community Identify potential opportunities for new technology and energy related products and services that will save Bronzeville residents & businesses money and improve their community
21 21 Partner Outreach Strategy ComEd is committed to developing partner outreach strategies that: Increase awareness of Community of the Future smart city and microgrid initiatives Identify opportunities for collaboration on technology applications Establish partnerships with key technology and smart city stakeholders Establish Bronzeville Community of the Future and related initiatives as a national best practice The Outreach process follows the following steps: Identify community, civic, business, technology and other impacted stakeholders Develop an outreach strategy to key stakeholders Define engagement strategies designed to meet those objectives Hold key stakeholder outreach and follow-up meetings
22 22 Beyond Bronzeville Bronzeville will serve as a model to what can be deployed in other communities within Northern Illinois. The foundation of the Community of the Future is a community where Smart Meters are already deployed. The Community of the Future is one with Smart Meters and engaged leaders and community members that support the convergence of resiliency, reliability, security, livability, workability, and sustainability to leverage the full power of the Smart Grid. The community will also reside a diversity of residential, commercial and industrial facilities, income, schools and religious facilities that all together, enrich education and the adoption of innovative technologies, energy efficiency programs and renewables to foster economic growth.
