High Speed Powerline Communication for the Smart Grid UPA Vision for the Future Chris Graham-Fielding
Freedom Digital Networks Freedom Digital Networks Privately funded UK company Formed in 2004 Deploy digital services based on Power Line Communications and associated infrastructures UPA Member since 2008 Chair the UPA Smart Grid working group Produced the Smart Grid Market Requirements Document (MRD)
Smart Grid Drivers Did you know.. It is not uncommon that the only way a utility knows there s an outage is when a customer calls to report it. Did you know. In the US alone, if the grid were just 5% more efficient, the energy savings would equate to permanently eliminating the fuel and greenhouse gas emissions from 53 million cars
Smart Grid Drivers POWER SYSTEM FACT Today s U.S. electricity system is percent reliable, yet still allows for power outages and interruptions that cost Americans at least $150 billion each year about $500 for every man, woman and child. US Department of Energy 2008
Smart Grid There is no single element in a Smart Grid it is an end to end cohesive solution It must provide reliable and cost effective two way communication across and between vast internal and edge assets. The UPA believe that a PLC enabled Smartgrid is key to delivering an end to end cohesive solution.
U.S. Department Of Energy (DOE) The adoption of Common technology standards such as Open Architecture, Internet protocol, Plug and play Non-Proprietary and Interoperability between components would speed Smart Grid adoption The challenge is a lack of agreement on what those standards should be and who should issue them Quote from The Smart Grid An Introduction
5 fundamental technologies for the Smart Grid: Integrated communications Sensing and measurement technologies Advanced components Advanced control methods Improved interfaces and decision support
UPA & The Smart Grid The UPA membership represents the market leaders in global smart grid on powerlines The UPA driving the adoption of standards and technology interoperability The UPA are active members of the Demand Response and Smart Grid Coalition (DRSG) and the Gridwise Alliance The UPA is Global in Reach and Universal in Scope
UPA & The Smart Grid
The Art of The Possible Bandwidth Required SCADA Distributed Power Control Self Healing Networks Cumulative bandwidth levels Command & Control Demand Side Management Applications and services Broadband Asset Management AMI
Smart Collaboration Enabling nationwide use of plug in hybrid vehicles Allowing the seamless integration of renewable Energy sources such as wind Making Large Scale power storage a reality Smart Grid Ushering in a new era of consumer choice Intelligently Integrating local power production Exploiting the use of Green & Intelligent Building Technologies
Smart Grid Requirements Technical Performance Communication Reliability, Security, Robustness Throughput, Bandwidth, Speeds Standards & Interoperability IEEE/P1901/G.hn/IEC 61xx/xDSL /ITU
Smart Grid Requirements Commercial Applications & Service Regulation SCADA, AMI, BPL, Security, Asset Mgmt Ofgem, FERC, Licensing Drivers Climate Economy Kyoto Protocol, RGGI, US CAR, $, ROI,
Smart Grid Evolution The Smart Grid will transform the current grid to one that functions more cooperatively, responsively and organically.
What could a UPA PLC Enabled Smart Grid look like? Wireless Solutions Asset protection MV solutions LV solutions Voice Over IP (Voip) SCADA Support Underground Solutions Security Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) Overhead Solutions AMI Solutions Broadband Over Powerlines (BPL)
UPA Smart Grid Vision Enables active participation by consumers Accommodates all generation and storage options Enables new products, services and markets Provides power quality for the digital economy Optimises assets & operates efficiently Anticipates and responds to system disturbances Operates resiliently against attack and natural disaster
Enabling an End to End" solution The communication doesn t stop at the end of the grid The Smart in Smart Grid isn t limited to the Utility infrastructure PLC isn t the only networking enabler, but it is key to providing an end to end solution The UPA PLC enables interoperable and co-existent products and services to be deployed to the benefit of all But it does require end to end collaboration
Hybrid Smart Grid Examples 1. Using one technology in the Smartgrid backhaul and another technology in the Smartgrid edge: W.W.W or W.W.W or other other backhaul backhaul End to End Connectivity Sub Station 2. Using multiple technologies in different parts of the edge network: Sub Station Pillar 3. Using multiple technologies for home area networks:
UPA Members -Smart Examples
A UK Market Smart Grid view A low-carbon economy will require Distribution Network Operators (DNO) networks that are larger and more intelligent in order to balance the dynamic interaction between generation and demand while maintaining current levels of reliability and availability. Active management of DNO networks is the future as opposed to the passive inconspicuous role of the past. Handling generation is now not just an issue for transmission operators. Distribution network operators are already having to deal with real time issues of reverse power flows and voltage controls. Jon Bird Head of Sustainability
Project under construction FDN working with Local Government & DNO CE Electric Smart Grid drivers associated with Regional Development, Social Inclusion & Education Private and Government funding Evaluation project target Q1 2010
Project under construction 4000 local residents 32 Substations Underground L.V. network External Housing for injection PLC for AMI and BPL Wireless Backhaul
Summary & Conclusion The UPA vision is for a Power Line Communication enabled Smart Grid that Enables End to End Integrated Communications Provides a Standards Based environment Supports advanced components and technologies Enhances market development Delivers a Platform for the Future
Market Requirements Document (MRD) Published in November 2008 Available to download on the UPA web site
