3 Background MBAULA was created during the 2012 PCIA/DISCOVER stove camp which gathered organizations and experts in production, promotion and marketing of biomass cooking technologies. The workshop participants expressed an urgent need for a long-term platform for bio-energy stakeholders in the country to share information and experience, increase common learning and to harmonize standards, implementation and marketing strategies.

4 Background cont... Started as an informal info sharing mailing list of 40 members, voluntarily facilitated by RENAMA, one of its founding member organizations. By now, RENAMA created a web platform to enhance information sharing among MBAULA members yet limitations in time/staff capacity to upscale and offer fully fledged coordination, surveys and other member services Mid 2013, MBAULA solicited support from IrishAid through the National Cookstove Taskforce to professionalize and upscale the network, create a webbased project database and survey projects

MBAULA as part of National Clean Cookstove Strategy In the National Taskforce action plan for the initial phase of activity, , the strengthening of MBAULA as a national network for all involved stakeholders has been planned as an essential instrument for informing and supporting the implementation of the National Strategy currently being developed in order to up-scale the marketing, usage and harmonization of cookstove technologies in the country.

6 Objectives To create a transparent platform for coordination and networking among stakeholders engaged in the production, technology development, promotion, implementation and planning of actions and strategies related to biomass energy and bio-fuels To provide a forum for information sharing and common learning To support policy makers and development partners with overview of existing initiatives, their challenges and benefits To support the National Cookstove Taskforce in raising public awareness for the importance of fuel efficient and emission-reduced cookstoves and contribute to the target of reaching 2 million Malawian households by 2020

7 Current Status Currently, there are 112 registered members and 180 potential members to be invited for full registration. Current activities: Updating website after moving to own domain Sub-contracted IT experts to bind capacity and projects databases into web-structure for publication Pre-KAP survey and registering new members Identifying bio-energy projects for case studies

9 Planned activities Publishing of member survey results and refining network design Launching the database and web forum for inputs from members (probably November 2013) Production and ing of regular MBAULA Newsletters (print versions for rural members to be handed out through NGO partners in the area) MBAULA News digests from the Melting Pot posts & distribution of rather urgent postings of members through ing list Regional face-to-face member meetings Hopefully in future: Annual MBAULA member meeting (maybe combine with Stove Camps?) Sampling of member projects for verification of data in the database and case studies Creation of quality control and standardization training manual for members with member inputs Creation of cook stove production and technology manual for members with member inputs
