As a national provider of electricity and gas network services, we understand and appreciate that end-user customer service and satisfaction are the ultimate measures of our performance. Overhead Electricity Thiess Services offers a comprehensive range of maintenance and capital works services for overhead line distribution networks. Our linesmen work on live low voltage and high voltage lines up to 33kV, using glove and barrier techniques and 66kV using stick methods where required. In circumstances where our crews are required to work in de-energised environments, Thiess Services holds the appropriate licences to carry out low voltage and high voltage switching and issue permits. 11 11 Gas Services Thiess Services provides a range of gas construction services for a number of distribution networks across Australia. Depending on the nature and location of the work, our civil and pit-building crews can draw on a range of installation techniques such as traditional open cut or directional drilling. Directional drilling is especially valuable in locations where surface level disturbance and traffic disruption need to be kept to a minimum. We have in-house plant, equipment and personnel who offer specialist horizontal directional drilling and micro-tunnelling services for the relocation and maintenance of underground infrastructure assets across water, gas, electricity and telecommunications. We are experienced in all facets of operations and maintenance activities including: Constructing new mains up to 200mm in steel and up to 180mm in polyethylene Constructing domestic and industrial services and meter assemblies Providing mains renewal services that include upgrading gas mains from low and medium pressure to high pressure in both steel and polyethylene Project management and customer service management Underground Electricity Thiess Services specialist underground crews bring their expertise to the construction and installation of permanent and temporary underground electricity supply. Our cable layers and jointers ensure transformers and switchgear, cable hauling and jointing, and sheath and continuity testing, are installed to exacting standards and comply with all statutory and network owner requirements. We provide high and low voltage underground electricity supply projects from North Queensland to Victoria and Western Australia. We draw on our civil capabilities in directional drilling when required to accommodate road and rail crossings or minimise surface disturbance.
12 12 In Focus Our teams are delivering a quality and value-added service across Australia Re-energising relationships Powering into the future TRUSTED PARTNERSHIPS Our electrical crews in Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton and Emerald undertake operations and maintenance services, and minor capital works, for Ergon Energy on the distribution network throughout the northern and central regions of Queensland. We have a dedicated plant and equipment fleet performing Ergon Energy s work, and offer scheduled and unscheduled maintenance services 24/7 on the utility s overhead and underground distribution network infrastructure. Separate crews undertake transmission projects for the electricity provider and mining clients throughout the region. Thiess Services has worked with Energex since 2003, delivering scheduled and unscheduled maintenance services on its overhead and underground distribution network infrastructure throughout Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. Our scope includes maintenance services such as reconductoring, refurbishment programs, transformer replacement and substation maintenance. We also undertake capital works, including the construction of new feeders and rebuilds of underground and overhead services. Close to 100 Thiess Services personnel and specialist subcontractors are dedicated to working full-time on the delivery of this contract. Thiess Services has delivered electrical operations, maintenance and capital works services to Western Power since As a Distribution Delivery Partner, we undertake maintenance and capital works services throughout metropolitan Perth and the regional centres of Bunbury and Geraldton. Thiess Services also has crews dedicated to transmission capital works and maintenance. Our forecasted scheduled maintenance program includes pole replacement, reconductoring and network integrity upgrades; capacity expansion projects; rural feeder upgrades; and customer-funded works.
13 13 Powering Australia s largest infrastructure project Brisbane s $4.8 billion Airport Link Project is Australia s largest road project and will be a vital piece of infrastructure for years to come. During construction, distribution network manager Energex contracted Thiess Services to undertake all of the temporary electrical works required to energise this project s multiple, heavy equipment-intensive work sites. As part of the scope, the team also relocated numerous overhead lines and underground electricity and gas services to ensure continuity of supply for residents and businesses as construction progressed. In the three-and-a-half-year construction period, Thiess Services electrical team installed 53.6 kilometres of conduit, 10 kilometres of high voltage cable, 7.3 kilometres of low voltage cable and 75 pits.
14 14 proven Gas capability Thiess Services entered the natural gas distribution sector in 2000 when we secured an operations and maintenance contract for the south and east areas of Melbourne with Multinet Gas Distribution. We were responsible for more than 8,500 kilometres of distribution pipe, 120 kilometres of transmission pipelines and more than 220 pressure regulators feeding more than 550,000 domestic, commercial and industrial customers. The contract services included first and emergency response, mains and services maintenance and repair, systems operations, cathodic protection, pipeline patrol and associated works to ensure the gas distribution network operated in a safe and reliable manner. Our business grew when we acquired Champ Constructions, a medium-sized gas construction contractor predominantly servicing the south and south eastern regions of Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula. We currently provide mains and services construction, and renewal services, for the three Victorian networks owned by SP AusNet, Multinet Gas Distribution and Envestra.
15 15 Upgrading Gas Supply Thiess Services has delivered a number of projects for APA Group across metropolitan and regional Victoria. A major gas infrastructure business, APA Group owns and operates approximately $9 billion of energy infrastructure assets across Australia, including more than 12,800 kilometres of high pressure gas transmission pipelines that span every state and territory on mainland Australia. The company delivers about half of Australia s annual gas use through its infrastructure. Thiess Services work for APA has included stages five and six at Rye on the Mornington Peninsula to improve gas supply to the region. Approximately four kilometres of gas mains were upgraded progressively over a two-year period. The final stage of works involved constructing 1400m x 200mm high pressure steel gas main reinforcement to operate at 1050kPa. The works included pipeline installation, two tie-ins, hydrostatic testing of the gas mains, horizontal directional drilling and open-cut excavation methods, mains deadening, reinstatements, project documentation and traffic management. EMERGENCY READY Over the years, the depth and responsiveness of our teams and their expert knowledge of network systems have enabled Thiess Services to support clients in a range of emergency situations including Cyclone Larry (2006) and the Victorian bushfires (2009). Following the devastation of Cyclone Yasi in 2011, Thiess Services responded to Ergon Energy s request for additional crews and machinery to restore power. We mobilised more than 120 personnel into the damage-affected areas of Far North Queensland, along with an entire fleet of borer/ lifters, elevated work platforms, crane trucks, trailers, line trucks and support vehicles. In total, we provided 21,000 man hours towards the rebuilding program; 9,300 of these hours were mobilised from other contracts. Recently, we committed additional resources to support SP AusNet s Bushfire Mitigation Program in Victoria. Works included replacing stressed steel conductors in country regions, replacing old-style high voltage fuse units (EDOs) with modern boric acid fuses and reconductoring numerous bays of open wire conductor with aerial bundled cable to further assist in reducing fire risk.
16 16 TRANSMISSION infrastructure Thiess Services is strengthening its engineering and construction capability to deliver substations, transmission lines, underground cable projects and high voltage services. Our estimating, design partners and construction teams have extensive experience in transmission construction projects. We bring engineering and construction capabilities, and systems synonymous with the Thiess group of companies. Mining and Industrial High Voltage Services As one of Australia s leading construction, mining and services contractors, the Thiess group has the expertise and experience to deliver integrated project solutions. Thiess Services provides the specialist brownfield civil, water and electricity infrastructure construction and maintenance services. On site we draw on a team of specialists across civil, structural, electrical installation and protection testing works. Our teams are highly mobile and experienced in working in challenging locations. They construct to precise specifications while managing schedules, logistics and quality assurance processes. They also have access to an extensive range of specialist plant including elevated platforms, cranes and specialist transmission lines stringing plant that complies with strict mine specifications. For major construction projects including lattice tower transmission lines, underground transmission cable projects and terminal/grid substations, we draw on the engineering, construction, tunnelling and project management expertise of the Thiess construction business. For high voltage operations and maintenance, we provide long-term management strategies, manage asset information, provide the works scheduling and deliver the field works under the Asset Management PAS-55 framework to achieve client reliability expectations. Our Asset Management System modules are designed with the flexibility to integrate with client practices and systems. 17 17 WE employ around 600 qualified and experienced staff who are engaged directly in the delivery of construction projects and services in North Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia Substations and Transmission Lines Delivering high voltage substations and transmission line projects requires multi-discipline capability and the organisational ability to assemble and project manage a team of designers, equipment suppliers, planners, field engineers, skilled construction and electrical workers, and linesmen. We team with specialist design partners to deliver underground cable, substation and transmission line projects at voltages up to 330kV. Our partners are selected on the basis of their niche skills and knowledge in particular sector areas. To ensure optimal results, we assign a design manager with construction experience to lead and challenge design concepts at the outset. Thiess Services can work with clients under a traditional free issue project material approach or offer alternative product supply and technology. We have key partnering arrangements in place with specific overseas manufacturers that give us access to quality transmission line structures, conductors and componentry, high voltage cables, substation transformers, switchgear and secondary systems.
18 18 We leverage the engineering and construction capabilities of the Thiess group Landmark LNG project steams ahead Thiess has been responsible for the supply, installation and commissioning of four 132/33Kv substations as part of the early works contract for the landmark QCLNG Project, a coal seam gas upstream project in Queensland, near the centres of Dalby and Chinchilla in the Surat Basin. The scope included the procurement and construction of the civil works, and electrical primary and secondary systems for the substations. Thiess was also responsible for commissioning the substations and integrating the state-of-the-art AS6185O protection schemes and communication protocols, in accordance with transmission network service provider Powerlink s specifications. The substations will supply power to the central gas processing plants and regional collector networks, field compressor stations, water pumping stations and facilities. Desalination Plant powers up Thiess Degrémont was contracted by AquaSure to design and construct the $3.5 billion Victorian Desalination Project, which comprises a reverse osmosis desalination process plant; associated marine tunnels and structures; an 84-kilometre water transfer pipeline; and an 87-kilometre, 220kV HVAC underground power cable to supply power to the plant. Part of the work involved the design and construction of two electrical substations to maintain a steady and reliable flow of power to the desalination plant, smoothing out any surges or drops in voltage. The stations were designed and constructed as outdoor air insulation stations to SP AusNet standards. The 25 MVA ONANA transformer for the northern substation and the 54.7MVAr compensating device for the southern substation were procured from Hyundai Heavy Industries. The team also built a third GIS 220/22kV substation to power the desalination plant. Two 150MVA 220/22kV transformers were installed to feed the main plant s 22kV switchboard.
19 19 Mining region boost Thiess Services constructed and energised a new 132kV tie line between the existing substation at Isaac Plains and the new substation at Broadlea in Central Queensland for Ergon Energy. Initially insulated at 66kV, the line is approximately 4.3 kilometres in length and supported by 35 pole structures varying in height from 12.5 to 38 metres. The scope of work also included installing new 132kV line entries into the Broadlea and the existing Moranbah substations; erecting new poles for the 55-metre landing spans at Broadlea substation for the Moorvale and Carborough 66kV feeders; and stringing about 14 kilometres of optical ground wire in an underslung arrangement. At locations with inadequate clearance, the team installed the fibre optic connection underneath a Queensland Rail crossing using trenching and horizontal boring techniques.

23 23 Developing District Energy Solutions Working collaboratively with CitySmart, Brisbane City Council and Energex, Thiess Services jointly completed a District Cooling System Pre-feasibility Report for the Brisbane CBD. One of the Report s objectives was to examine viable, longterm reductions to CBD CO 2 emissions and electricity peak demand. The Report assessed the feasibility of introducing a district cooling system that could deliver cooling solutions to a large number of both private and publicly-owned buildings in three stages. It also included high-level technical assessment, detailed financial feasibility, potential pipe routes and options for a central chiller plant and thermal storage tanks. If all stages were implemented, the system could service a total office floor area in excess of 450,000m 2. The scope of works could include a highly efficient centralised water chiller plant, thermal storage tanks, an underground chilled water distribution system and connections to participating CBD buildings.
24 24 COGENERATION AND TRI-GENERATION PLANTS Thiess Services has the expertise to deliver all aspects of the cogeneration and tri-generation project cycle. Specialising in plants ranging from 100 9,000KW, we offer financial and energy analysis, planning, equipment selection, installation, commissioning, and operation and maintenance service agreements. Our expertise extends to setting up the complex contractual agreements required for the establishment and operation of these facilities. Our services range from consultancy through to a total solutions provider, including assisting clients with decisions and services in the pre-investment phase, investment phase and operating phase. 25 25 A Healthy Injection As part of the $756 million redevelopment project at Sydney s Royal North Shore Hospital, Thiess and Thiess Services installed two 2MW cogeneration facilities to meet the baseload energy demand of the new hospital, in addition to two 2MW diesel generators for emergency purposes. The heat recovered from the cogeneration facilities is being used to provide domestic hot water and heating for the hospital. Fully operational, Thiess Services is currently responsible for the operations and maintenance of the cogeneration facilities for a 28-year period.
