Dejan Pajić University of Novi Sad, Faculty of Philosophy - Department of Psychology dpajic@ff.uns.ac.rs Abstract BAnToo is a simple bibliometric analysis toolkit for Windows. The application has several functionalities for importing, tabulating, and exporting bibliographic data. It supports both the Web of Science and Scopus output file formats. Imported data can be used to generate frequency and co-occurrence tables. BAnToo allows searching, filtering, and exporting data in the form of tables, co-occurrence matrices, similarity matrices or network files for Pajek. Keywords: citation analysis; co-citation analysis; network analysis; Web of Science; Scopus Contents 1. Downloading and installing Importing data Creating frequency tables Creating co-occurrence tables Crosstabulations of WoS analysis data Exporting data Tools and options... 9 Version 0.9
1. Downloading and installing BAnToo can be downloaded free from the institutional repository of the Department of Psychology of the Faculty of Philosophy, Novi Sad, Serbia. Please use the following link to download the installation file: Double-click on the saved file to start the installation. 2. Importing data In order to use BAnToo you will need some data from the Web of Science (WoS) or Scopus. To save search results in WoS, first choose Save to Other File Formats option from the dropdown list at the top of the search results list. Choose records you want to save and content to save in the Send to File dialog (Figure 1). If you plan to perform (co-)citation analysis in BAnToo you will need citation data and should choose the Full Record and Cited References option. Choose Plain Text as the file format. Figure 1. Exporting search results from the Web of Science In addition to the plain text WoS output, BAnToo also supports WoS analysis data output. Results analysis option in WoS enables you to generate different frequency lists based on search results, e.g. lists of authors or source titles (Figure 2). To save analysis data, click the Analyze Results link at the top right of the search results list. Choose the filed to rank records by and click Save Analysis Data to File. 1
Figure 2. Exporting analysis data from the Web of Science NOTE: Proper file naming is very important for further analysis. This issue will be explained in more details in section 5. Please have in mind that previously explained options are available only within the Web of Science Core Collection and may not be available in other databases covered by WoS. Figure 3. Exporting search results from Scopus To save search results from the Scopus database, first select records you wish to save and then click the Export link at the top of the search results list. In the next dialog chose the CSV 2
(Excel) as the export format and select the information to export (Figure 3). Choose the All available information option if it is available. You may wish to exclude the abstracts in order to reduce the file size or select the customized output (Specify fields to export). BAnToo consists of five tabs. The first tab contains options for importing data (Figure 4). If the format of the file you have chosen is recognized by BAnToo you should see the feedback information below the upper textbox. As it was explained before, BAnToo supports three data formats: WoS raw dataset, WoS analysis file, and Scopus csv output. Figure 4. Importing data to BAnToo When the appropriate file is opened, BAnToo offers to import data into database with the same name which will be automatically created. You can change database name and its location before import. If you choose to import data into an existing database, you will be prompted to select whether to overwrite the existing database or to add records. When adding records to the existing database, BAnToo imports only new records based on their unique WoS or Scopus id. This information is contained in the UT field in WoS and EID field in Scopus. If the import all files from the current folder option is checked, all files from the current folder will be imported into the same database. Only files of the same type are imported during the batch import process. Basically, it is possible to import WoS data into a data- 3
base and then add data from the Scopus or vice versa, but this is not recommended. You cannot combine WoS analysis data type with the other two data formats. BAnToo converts imported data into Microsoft Access database format (mdb). After the successful import, database will contain the following tables: 1. Abstracts (of imported documents) 2. Authors (of imported documents) 3. AuthorsMerged (contains the list of corrected authors' names) 4. Documents 5. KeyWords (both the author keywords and index keywords if available) 6. References (all cited references in original form and parsed into the following fields: year, title, source, and doi) 7. ReferencesAu (authors extracted from cited references) Database will also have six supplementary tables with the "f" prefix. These are automatically created during the import process. NOTE: Since the supplementary analytical tables are created during the import, this process can last from several minutes up to several hours, depending on the number of files and the number of records. Importing Scopus data usually lasts longer compared to WoS output due to a different format of cited references. You may consider testing BAnToo for the first time on a smaller set of records, e.g. up to one thousand. 3. Creating frequency tables The second tab contains options for creating frequency tables for different database fields, i.e. bibliographic data (Figure 5). Click the Open database button to open database. When database is open, its full path is displayed as the button's tooltip text and button's icon changes to. Before creating the table, chose a data field from the list: 1. Authors of the articles 2. Authors of the cited references 3. Countries from the authors' affiliations 4. Document types 5. Authors' keywords 6. Index keywords (KeyWords Plus in WoS) 7. Publication sources (journals) 8. Cited sources 9. Publication years 4
Figure 5. Creating frequency tables in BAnToo You can set threshold limits both before and after creating the table. Pressing the enter key within the threshold boxes has the same function as clicking the Create table button. Depending on the selected database field, up to three thresholds will be available: occ - Minimum number of occurrences (yellow) Only items with the number of occurrences equal or larger than the set threshold are listed. occp - Minimum number of papers (green) Only items which occurred in a number of papers equal or larger than the set threshold are listed. For example, a journal cited 10 times in only one paper in the current database will have occ = 10 and occp = 1. Ncooc - Minimum number of co-occurred items (red) Only items which have occurred with a number of different entities equal or larger than the set threshold are listed. NOTE: Frequency tables of authors and sources contains information on the number of citations. This information is based on the citation rate of individual articles and should be available even if the reference list is not imported. 5
Use the left < and right > buttons to browse the list. Right click the buttons to move the list ten pages forward or backward. You can also use Pg Up and Pg Dn keys on the keyboard to browse the list. You can change the data sort order by double-clicking different columns in the table. Use the Search... textbox to incrementally search currently displayed data. 4. Creating co-occurrence tables The third BAnToo tab contains options for creating co-occurrence tables (Figure 6). Options are very similar to that on the second tab. The main difference is that threshold limits have to be set before creating the table. Three thresholds are supported: occp - Minimum number of papers (green) Only items which occurred in a number of papers equal or larger than the set threshold are taken into account for analysis. Values are not shown in table. cooc - Minimum number of co-occurrences (gray) Only the pairs of items with the number of co-occurrences equal or larger than the set threshold are listed. Ncooc - Minimum number of co-occurred items (red) Only items which have occurred with a number of different entities equal or larger than the set threshold are taken into account for analysis. Values are not shown in table. NOTE: The creation of co-occurrence table with the thresholds set is an iterative process and hence it is hard to estimate the final number of elements in the table. For example, if you chose to exclude items that have occurred less than 10 times, this also influences the cooccurrence values of items that have appeared more than 10 times in the database. BAnToo will try to keep the "core" of the group which means that some entities that do not meet the set threshold limits may also appear in tables, matrices or networks. BAnToo currently supports the creation of six types of co-occurrence tables/matrices: 1. Co-authorships among authors 2. Co-authorships among countries 3. Authors co-citations (pairs of authors cited in the same paper) 4. Cited sources co-citations (unique pairs of sources cited in the same paper) 5. Co-occurrences of keywords (both the authors' and indexed) 6
Figure 6. Creating co-occurrence tables in BAnToo 5. Crosstabulations of WoS analysis data The fourth BAnToo tab contains options to create tables based on WoS analysis data files (Figure 7). On this tab, it is not possible to open databases created from the WoS or Scopus raw datasets. This group of options is most useful when you have multiple analysis files of the same type, based on different search conditions. For example, it was used to create the map of Eastern European countries and their most relevant WoS journals in the article Globalization of the social sciences in Eastern Europe: genuine breakthrough or a slippery slope of the research evaluation practice? (Pajić, 2014). Analysis data file with the list of the most common source titles was created for each of the 20 analyzed countries. Names of the countries were also used as the file names. During the import of analysis data files, BAnToo uses file names to create a categorical variable (countries in the current example). File names (i.e. categories) are displayed in the category column of the resulting table (see Figure 7). This option enables setting the threshold for the minimum number of items per category. In the previous example, it is possible to select top N journals for each country. If this value is set to 0 then all available items for each category will be listed. You can also set the thresholds for the minimum number of occurrences, expressed both as the absolute number (occ) and the percentage within the category (occp). Search... textbox can be used to incrementally search data in the active (white) column. Click the column to make it active. Double-click the column to change the sort order. 7
Figure 7. Crosstabulation options in BAnToo 6. Exporting data Click the Save table button to export the data from BAnToo. Depending on the type of analysis, up to four output formats will be available: Frequency table Tab delimited text file containing the data in rows and columns as shown in the table. Co-occurrence matrix Tab delimited text file in the matrix format of N x N elements. Cells contain raw cooccurrence numbers. The numbers of occurrences are in the main diagonal. Similarity matrix This is the standardized co-occurrence matrix with the values of 1 in the main diagonal. Based on the report of Leydesdorff (2008) on (dis)advantages of different types of normalizations of co-occurrence data, the Jaccard index was selected as the measure of similarity. Pajek network This is the format that can be imported directly into Pajek (de Nooy, Mrvar & Batagelj, 2011) in order to visualize network relationships among various entities. 8
7. Tools and options BAnToo currently supports four options which enables you to customize the import process and data output: import abstracts Choose whether to ignore the article abstracts during the import process or to import abstracts as a memo database field. Leaving this option unchecked will significantly reduce the size of the resulting database. import and parse references References are necessary for all types of citation and co-citation analysis. However, this step significantly extends the time needed to import data and create supplementary tables. It largely depends on the number of imported documents and the number of references. complete and correct authors' names If this option is checked, BAnToo will try to merge different forms of author's names. Currently, the algorithm uses only the affiliation and doesn't support the correction of cited authors' names. The list of corrections is available in the AuthorsMerged table in the database which is created during the import process. rescale the size range of vertices and edges in network files This option is useful when the difference between the largest and the smallest values in the dataset is very large. Rescaling will usually make Pajek maps less cluttered. References Leydesdorff, L. (2008). On the normalization and visualization of author co-citation data: Salton s Cosine versus the Jaccard index.
