1 32 Using Local Data Sources in Web Intelligence Documents We have used universes as data sources for queries created in Web Intelligence and in Web Intelligence Rich Client Local Data Sources in Web Intelligence Rich Client It is also possible to use Text and Excel files (*.txt, *.csv, *.prn, *.asc, *.xls, *.xlsx) as sources of data when creating queries using Web Intelligence Rich Client. In this example we will demonstrate using an Excel file as a data source in a document already containing a query based on a universe. We will also use Merged Dimensions to compare data between the two queries. We will use the document Sales Revenue by State per Year as the starting point as we have just imported and saved it locally. See the last few pages on Importing Documents from a Repository of the previous session Working with Documents in Web Intelligence Rich Client. 1. Launch Web Intelligence Rich Client in Connected Mode and browse to your local folder to open Sales Revenue by State per Year. 2. Select Data Access Edit to open the Query Panel. 3. Select Add Query From Excel. 537

The file can be placed in any location of your choice (i.e. it does not have to be in My BusinessObjects Documents ). 5. Click on Open to use the selected file. 6. The selected file will appear in the Custom Data Provider interface: For an Excel file, you can: Specify the Sheet Name to use from an Excel workbook containing more than one worksheet. You can also specify the Field Selection (i.e. the location of the data set within the selected sheet): All Fields (i.e. all columns and rows containing data) Range Definition to manually define a range 538

3 Range Name to select a range of cells that have already been defined in the Excel file Also if first row contains column names is checked then the first row of data will be used to name the objects by Web Intelligence Rich Client. NOTE The Custom Data Provider interface will change if you select a text file (*.txt, *.csv, *.prn, *.asc) as shown below. For a text file, you have to instruct Web Intelligence Rich Client on how to parse (or process) the file contents in order to extract meaningful data: Specify how the data is separated using options for Data Separator, i.e. in each row of data the columns are separated by Tabulation, Space or another Character. Specify if there is a Text Delimiter enclosing each column value. First row contains column names in the file. Locale of the data within the file. Charset is the Character Set in which the data has been saved within the file. Date Format of any date columns in the file. 539

Click OK to load the data into Web Intelligence Rich Client: In the example above, the Excel file has been loaded into Web Intelligence Rich Client with: Name property (of Query) set to Query 1 The objects have been named [Year], [State] and [Budget Sales Revenue] as based on the property First row contains column names in the previous interface [Year] and [Budget Sales Revenue] have been created as Measures (due to values containing number formatting only) [State] has been created as a Dimension 540

5 8. The query Name property can be changed as shown below: 9. The definition of each object can be changed as shown below. [Year] will be changed to a Dimension object and its Type will be changed to string : NOTES The aggregation behaviour of Measures can be controlled using the Aggregation function property. Detail objects have to be associated to a Dimension using the Associated dimension property. These two properties are context sensitive and are enabled depending on what is selected for the Qualification property. 10. Run the new query qrybudgetdata... and select Insert a table in a new report when prompted. NOTE If you choose to Apply changes and Close instead of running the query then you will be able to use the objects from the new query but there will be no data within the microcube to display within the document. 541
