3 Summary This document will outline the server and PC requirements for upgrading to the latest version of Yellow Dog software. Additionally, it will cover the upgrade process to be performed by your Yellow Dog Upgrade Consultant. Yellow Dog System Requirements Note: Local IT must install on all servers and workstations.net framework prior to any upgrade. If needed, Yellow Dog can assist, however admin permissions and a server/pc reboot may be required. 4 Database and Application Server Minimum Requirements 2.4GHz Dual Core Processor 4GB of Memory 25GB of Storage per Database Windows Server 2008 R2 SQL Server 2012 SP1 SQL 2008 R2 At this time, we no longer support SQL 2008 R2 or below. SQL 2016 Benefits Decreased hard disk and memory space requirements SQL Express customers with larger databases take advantage as the limit is based on the compressed data size. Better organization of history tables used for tracking data changes for auditing purposes Feature enhancements for performance oriented tasks Item Adjustment History was the largest computational task that has benefited greatly since SQL 2012 Data compression, allows for less space used both on disk and in memory This again increases performance since memory is usually a bottleneck for databases SQL 2016 has a feature called Query Store that allows for better management of execution plans. 5 16GB of Registered ECC Memory 100GB of Redundant Storage Windows Server 2012 R2 or higher SQL Server 2016 SP1 or higher SQL Server Configuration Yellow Dog Inventory recommends at least 100GB of space to allow for database growth and backups. Backups follow the location set during SQL installation. If SQL Server is not already installed, we will be happy to install it for you. SQL Server must be configured for mixed-mode security. For the initial install, Yellow Dog Inventory will need admin rights to the database server. After the installation, Yellow Dog Inventory will connect using a database-specific SQL login. We prefer SQL to use Windows Authentication. If you do not use this, we will need the login and password for the SQL SA account. We will need the following information for the server. Administrator rights for installation. Database specific Windows login and password after the installation. The IP address and name of the server. Sharing A Database Server Yellow Dog Inventory creates only a single SQL Database. As such, this database can be installed on a previously existing server with SQL, and can often be created on a server housing other databases. Some scenarios are: For Micros 3700, we can set up SQL Server to run in parallel to Sybase. This requires more resources from the server. 6 Additional Settings Requirements by Yellow Dog The client does not have any specific requirements beyond those required by the Windows operating system. Yellow Dog Inventory clients must be able to communicate to SQL Server across your network through the port determined during initial installation. Please ensure that this is not blocked by your firewall. We recommend using a non-standard port number for any public facing installation. Yellow Dog may be installed into a virtual environment with the above specifications. Remote Access For most installs and support, we need the ability to access the MS SQL Database server remotely. We typically have two methods of connectivity: Client-granted access via a remote access tool. Constant access. Our default tool for both methods is TeamViewer 10. For client-granted access, a local contact will need to be present to establish the initial connection. For constant access without TeamViewer, a VPN or other direct access will need to be provided to Yellow Dog Software. We can also utilize Remote Desktop if a firewall port is opened, or if we have access to another VPN (such as Cisco or Sonic Wall). Upgrade Process During the upgrade the Yellow Dog database is taken offline. The downtime is dependent on the size of your database, the version of SQL currently in use, and server hardware. While the Yellow Dog database is offline the point of sale is not effected. A server review will be required prior to the upgrade to estimate the downtime and identify any customizations in place. 7 Procedure for Yellow Dog Upgrade done by the Upgrade Consultant: Gain access to Host Yellow Dog App/DB server/s Take a Review of the server environment Copy all outdated program files to OLD folder Pull down from FTP all necessary program files for upgrade Run the UpgradeYdi.exe program the program takes a backup first should this fail the upgrade stops Apply latest SQL patches to the YD database Run ydimaintenance.exe to clean up and reorganize the database after upgrade Schedule Maintenance Run a Pull from the Upgraded POS sync to capture missed sales this will not affect the POS system because it s not writing any data to it Perform a full run of the POS sync to verify successful data update and that the run time is diminishing post upgrade Reschedule sync Log into Yellow Dog to verify recovery of sales and Update any lacking User Permissions post upgrade Run and schedule any other tasks against the database verify successful completion The local computers running Yellow Dog will also need to be upgraded after the database is finished. To do this Yellow Dog must be run as a Windows Administrator. This will trigger the program to see the difference and self-upgrade from the server. If the Yellow Dog program fails to launch after the upgrade verify that.net Framework is properly installed on the PC.
