4 A Continuous Journey Toward Openness and Cost-Effectiveness Initially, SAP HANA could only be deployed as an appliance fitted with certified hardware from third parties. All key components for running SAP HANA were preconfigured and preinstalled in a single enclosure, delivering predictability and peace of mind. That said, there was a limited choice of hardware, requiring some customers to adapt IT operation processes. As illustrated in the figure, SAP HANA tailored data center integration has a history of delivering customer value by driving openness and cost-effectiveness. The first phase of SAP HANA tailored data center integration allowed customers to use their existing enterprise storage solutions with any compute server supported by SAP HANA. The second phase added a reference architecture and recommended best practices for SAP HANA networking. Customers could now harness their existing networking infrastructure and components such as routers, bridges, and switches for SAP HANA cluster internode and cross-site communication. The third phase lowered the entrance barrier to SAP HANA deployment by providing price-sensitive customers with a choice of computed nodes based on Intel Xeon E5 commodity hardware. The fourth phase saw the addition of IBM POWER8 to the support matrix for SAP HANA. 5 Phase Five Greater Flexibility and System Rightsizing The fifth phase of SAP HANA tailored data center integration extends the choice and granularity of hardware for SAP HANA. For example, general support now spans all Intel Xeon E7 and Intel Skylake scalable processors (SP) with more than eight cores, increasing the flexibility for processor types and the number of cores used. Additionally, for Intel Xeon Skylake-SP, Intel Xeon E7, and IBM POWER8 processors, SAP HANA tailored data center integration now provides tools for system memory and processor sizing. These sizing tools let you tune your hardware configuration to your specific workload. Sizing helps you identify the right fit for your needs at the right price. Sizing results are expressed in terms of SAP Application Performance Standard (SAPS) values, RAM, CPU, and disk input and output. Your hardware partner can translate these results into custom configurations, selecting from extensive processor options that differ in frequency and processing power, spanning low-price, midrange, and high-end CPUs. 7 VERSATILITY IS KEY Today, SAP HANA tailored data center integration lets you choose from a vast array of system configurations for SAP HANA for a wide range of use cases and budgets, from a single small server to large clusters and cloud deployments. Whatever you choose, SAP-certified hardware configurations provide industry-leading breadth and depth. Single server: Providing anywhere from 2 CPUs and 128 GB of memory capacity to 16 CPUs and up to 24 TB of memory, a single server can be used as an entry-level solution for SAP HANA (for data mart deployments, for example). Scale-out cluster: Each cluster can be scaled out from an initial minimum of 3 servers to more than 100 servers. The largest SAP-certified configuration solution comprises 112 servers. Configurations including more than 250 servers have been tested. Cloud deployment: SAP HANA instances can be deployed to cloud platforms provided by market-leading vendors. Optionally, onpremise operations can be integrated with IaaS deployment models to support functions such as disaster recovery. The general procedure for going live with SAP HANA involves the following steps: 1. Determine the size of your planned SAP HANA system. Our Quick Sizer tool provides you with a quicker and easier way to determine the CPU, memory, and SAPS requirements for running your workloads on SAP HANA. 2. Note that, for your customized system solution, you do not need to order local disks or integrated storage these are needed for appliances only. If you want your SAP HANA system to boot from storage area networks (SANs), you may want to consider purchasing additional Fibre Channel adapters. 5. Select your storage solution using the Certified Enterprise Storage tab in the directory of certified and supported hardware for SAP HANA. 6. Order your storage solution from your partner of choice. 7. Set up your SAP HANA hardware infrastructure, including operating system and hypervisor. Familiarize yourself with SAP HANA input and output (I/O) patterns and the impact of data throughput KPIs during daily SAP HANA operation as explained in the storage requirement documentation for SAP HANA tailored data center integration. Configure your storage system following your vendor s directions and recommendations. 8. Have your SAP HANA software installed by a partner that is certified by SAP to manage applications for SAP customers. 9. Go live.
