Graphical Presentation of Data Dr Steve Woodhead Supporting your argument Introducing Matlab Graph plotting in Matlab Matlab demonstrations Lecture Overview Lab two The assignment part two Next week Lecture review Supporting Your Argument (1) Supporting Your Argument (2) Once a piece of research has been completed it is necessary to present the results to others MSc project examiners and supervisors MPhil/PhD examiners and supervisors Journal and/or conference editors and referees Funding bodies and commercial clients When presenting our data to these parties, its important to communicate it in the clearest possible way We want to present the strongest argument possible We also need to present our data in a fair manner For example we cannot be selective about the individual data points which we present from a complete data set unless we have a very strong argument for being selective Supporting Your Argument (3) 1 Supporting Your Argument (4)

Supporting Your Argument (5) Supporting Your Argument (6) Supporting Your Argument (7) Graphical Presentation (1) There are many forms in which we can present research results Free text argument Tabular Graphical This lecture is about graphical presentation of data There are a number of different forms of graphical presentation Examples.. Graphical Presentation (3) Graphical Presentation (4) Bar Charts 16 Http Server Hosts 22 Pie Charts Workstation Operating Systems 1% 2% 14 4% 3% 12 1 Window s 8 Linux MacOS Solaris 6 Other 4 2 9% Apache IIS Tomcat Netscape Other

Graphical Presentation (5) Graphical Presentation (6) Line / Point Graphs 1 5 A great deal of engineering and scientific research data is presented in the form of point and / or line graphs sometimes also referred to as X-Y graphs We shall therefore be looking at this form of graphical presentation in some detail 5 1 Graphical Presentation (7) Introducing Matlab (1) A number of common software packages are available to assist in graph plotting MS Excel is commonly used Matlab is commonly used for both processing and presentation of engineering and scientific data Matlab is a high level programming language which is designed to allow the manipulation, analysis and presentation of engineering and scientific data Many ready-built functions are available in the form of libraries Introducing Matlab (2) Graph Plotting in Matlab (1) Matlab is an interpreted language no compilation required Matlab is particularly effective in plotting complex graphs giving the user a large degree of control over the output Matlab can read numerical data in from a text file usually in comma separated form Matlab tries to handle all data in matrix (array) format Matlab has a number of graph plotting functions available

Graph Plotting in Matlab (2) Matlab Demonstrations(1) data file format Matlab graph plotting demo 1 (RMplot1) basic use of the plot function Matlab Demonstrations(2) Matlab Demonstrations(3) Matlab graph plotting demo 2 (RMplot2) modifying the axis adding a grid Matlab graph plotting demo 3 (RMplot3) adding labels axis graph data sets Matlab Demonstrations(4) Lab Two Matlab graph plotting demo 4 (RMplot4) adding error bars We can download all of the example files for reference We can practice plotting graphs in Matlab using a new data set as outlined on the lab sheet This will be practice for part 2.2 of the assignment

The Assignment Part Two Once you have competed lab 2, you will be able to attempt part 2.2 of the assignment Next Week Research Document Authoring and Oral Presentations Lecture Overview Supporting your argument Introducing Matlab Graph plotting in Matlab Matlab demonstrations Lab two The assignment part two
