Europlanet IDIS: Adapting existing VO building blocks to Planetary Sciences B. Cecconi, LESIA, Observatoire de Paris, France Cospar-2012, Mysore
EPN/IDIS Building a planetary VO prototype VO = Virtual Observatory EPN-RI = European Planetology Network - Research Infrastructure (FP7 EU project) IDIS = Integrated and Distributed Information System. One of the goals of IDIS is to propose a prototype of a planetary science VO
Context Europlanet/IDIS: prototyping a Planetary Sciences VO Several of science thematics: atmospheres, surfaces, interiors, small bodies, orbital parameters, in situ exploration, plasma (waves, particle and fields), radio astronomy... Large variety of data types: images, spectra, times series, movies, dynamic spectra, profiles, maps... Even larger variety of physical parameters Including: remote data, in-situ data, models, lab experiments, field analogs
Architecture IVOA protocols PDAP SPASE-QL IDIS-TAP? EPN-TAP TAPxsams EPN-TAP IDIS-TAP or IDIS-friendly PDAP IVOA DM PDS-based DM SPASE DM IDIS EPN-DM DM? XSAMS / SSDM IDIS EPN-DM DM? 5 Existing Models and Protocols for Planetary Sciences? IPDA (International Planetary Data Alliance): - close to PDS4 (new version of NASA Planetary Data System, based on XML and on interoperable standards) - PDAP (Planetary Data Access Protocol) => Archive-oriented format and access protocol IVOA (International Virtual Observatory Alliance): - Many data models (Characterisation, VOResource, VODataService, Space Time Coordinates...) - TAP (Table Access Protocol): generic protocol for accessing tabular data - Existing Registry - SAMP (Simple Application Messaging Protocol): see my other presentation in this session. => Generic models and protocols using sky-coordinates VAMDC (Virtual Atomic and Molecular Data Centre) - XSAMS: XML Schema for Atomic, Molecular and Solid Data HDMC (Heliophysics Data and Model Consortium): - SPASE (Space Physics Archive Search and Extract): Data model and query language OGC-GIS (Open Geospatial Consortium): - not assessed yet...
Bricks from IPDA (International Planetary Data Alliance) Data Model: PDS - PDS = Planetary Data Archive - PDS3: plain text based with loose keyword/value constraints - PDS4: based on XML and ISO standards - not available on time for EPN-IDIS time frame, but looks promising! => not used in EPN-IDIS Protocol: PDAP - based on «PDS3» keywords - PDAP-core + extensions - version 1.0 not released yet. => pre-version (Nov-11) used in EPN-IDIS to - access ESA-PSA and JAXA-DARTS datasets (no PDAP service on PDS data yet) - share EPN-IDIS datasets IPDA plans to have a registry connected to the PDS registry. Not clear yet if we will use it.
Bricks from IVOA (International Virtual Observatory Alliance) Data Model: - VOResource => EPNResource - main modifications: new list of target classes, facility classes (spacecraft, ground-based, lab...), new list of UCDs (Unified Content Descriptors)... Protocol: - TAP (Table Access Protocol) adapted to planetary sciences. - sky coordinates (RA, Dec) is not a query keyword, but time range and target are required. - new fields: Dataproduct_type, Spectral range, Spatial coordinates on planetary reference frames - fields with ranges: query on resolution and sampling allowed. - new list of values => EPN-TAP
VO-blocks used in IDIS Summary Data Model: - EPNRessource (modified VORessource) Protocols: - EPN-TAP (TAP with planetary science keywords) - PDAP (v1.0[nov-11] + measurement_type (ucd)) Registry: - IVOA registry for EPN-TAP services For specific science thematics with pre-existing data models and protocols: we keep them (SPASE, XSAMS...)
PDAP vs EPN-TAP Query keywords PDAP-core Query Keywords (V Nov-09) RESOURCE_CLASS - TARGET_NAME - TARGET_TYPE - START_TIME/STOP_TIME - TIME_SERIES EXTENSION? [WAVELENGTH] - SPECTRUM EXTENSION? [SPACECRAFT_ALTITUDE] - FLY-BY EXTENSION? INSTRUMENT_NAME - INSTRUMENT_HOST_NAME - INSTRUMENT_TYPE - RETURN_TYPE - EPN-TAP core Query Keywords - RESOURCE_TYPE - DATAPRODUCT_TYPE (from list) - TARGET_NAME - TARGET_CLASS (from list) - TIME (MIN/MAX) - SAMPLING STEP (MIN/MAX) - EXPOSURE TIME (MIN/MAX) - SPECTRAL RANGE (MIN/MAX) - SPECTRAL SAMPLING (MIN/MAX) - SPECTRAL RESOLUTION (MIN/MAX) - SPATIAL RANGE (C1,C2,C3) (MIN/MAX) - SPATIAL RESOLUTION (MIN/MAX) - SPATIAL FRAME TYPE (from list) - INCIDENCE ANGLE (MIN/MAX) - EMERGENCE ANGLE (MIN/MAX) - INSTRUMENT HOST NAME - INSTRUMENT NAME - MEASUREMENT TYPE (always VOTable)
EPN-TAP Keyword Value lists DATA_PRODUCT_TYPE: image, spectrum, dynamic_spectrum, spectral_cube, profile, volume, movie, cube, time_series, catalog, spatial_vector TARGET_CLASS: asteroid, dwarf_planet, planet, satellite, comet, exoplanet, interplanetary_medium, ring, sample, sky, spacecraft, spacejunk, star SPATIAL_FRAME_TYPE: celestial, body, cartesian, cylindrical, spherical MEASUREMENT_TYPE: composed from IVOA UCD list (additions specific to planetary science, under development)
PDAP and EPN-TAP Implementations PDAP-Core implemented at VO-Paris: and CDPP (Toulouse): Demo Slides EPN-TAP developed by VO-Paris (from IVOA TAP). Compatible with TAP, with a different set of required parameters (adapted to planetology). Four datasets from VOParis registered in IVOA registry. Demo Slides with TOPCAT SAMP to share data between client and tools (see my presentation tomorrow).

Further Steps EPN contract ends on december Currently active partners will go on studies and developments. New partners are welcome! New projects will be proposed on well identified tasks, e.g., dataset deployment in «small» data providers...
